!"The influence of this team’s project has spread much farther than Worcester! Barbara Broad, a longtime supporter of Camp Reach and Chair of Groveland Area Involved Neighbors in Groveland, CA, read about the project in our newsletter and saw an opportunity to make use of it in her com-munity! Clients of the Groveland Adult Day Health Care Center now have ac-cess to a computer work-station based on the specifications developed by the Camp Reach team of engineers. The computer’s key-board is at least twice the size of a regular one, and the mouse is eight inches in di-ameter. It also has speakers and a headset for those who have hearing impairments.

According to Barbara, clients have been so excited to do things like make greet-ing cards. The Camp Reach team was cited in a newspa-per article in The Union Democrat (Sonora, CA). Congratulations to the ESP team for playing such an important role in improving the quality of life for elderly people on both sides of the country!

+,!($)---As described in our January newsletter, one of the Camp Reach 2005 design teams developed a plan for a computer workstation that could be used by clients of the Elder Service Plan (ESP), an adult day pro-gram in Worcester for seniors who are nursing-home qualified.

In late May we received a status report from the staff at ESP (now called Summit Elder Care.) A com-puter has been installed for their clients, but they have not yet been able to fully implement the team’s

recommendations because of budget constraints re-sulting from unexpected repairs to their facility. Staff members plan to implement more as soon as their budget allows, hopefully later this summer. In the meantime, clients are enjoying the PC for games and communicating with their families. In fact, one client has gotten so much enjoyment from the com-puter that she did not want to move to another facil-ity closer to her home, unless it also had a computer!

Again this year we have assembled a terrific group of TAs, MSTs, and RAs who become the heart of the Reach program, and several of the TAs are Reach alumnae. Congratula-tions and thanks to the following alumnae, all from 2001 and 2002, who will be serving as TAs: Brittany Garrett, Jen Giard, Tanya Hakim, Amanda Griffin, Amy Katuska, Franny Minervini, Lauren Morocco, and Christina Oullette. And the following alumnae will be RAs: Erin Dagle (’00), Cali O’Connor (‘00), Carolyn Purington (‘00), and Sam Wilner (‘99).

We are thrilled to be collaborating with three terrific non-profit organizations in the Worcester community who will be sponsoring this year’s design projects: Broadmeadow Brook Wildlife Sanctuary; Friendly House, one of Worcester’s major providers of shelter for homeless people; and Sherry’s House, a home for children with can-cer and their families. Watch for details in the next newsletter.

4!) !)5!6!%I regret that I do not have much new to report! Soon after I heard from Paul Newton that air conditioners were taking up the storage space, the leadership at the home changed. Now I am facing challenges com-municating with the new staff about your project recommendations. I’ll be persistent! Sometimes it’s a reality of life that despite excellent quality work, de-signs don’t get implemented due to factors like this that are beyond our control. You still have a lot to be proud of because you know deep down that you did good work. So keep smiling! --Chrys

Tony Smith, a prior supporter of Camp Reach and founder of the Silver Crescent Foundation in South Carolina, has led the initiation of a similar program for middle school students in South Carolina. The purpose of “Camp Success” is to cultivate creativity, innovation, and leadership— essential tools for students to thrive as highly skilled professionals and also the building blocks for success in the global economy. Key elements of the pro-gram are a “Creative Community Design Project” and “Discovery Workshops” modeled after those at Camp Reach.

Last November the Camp Success leadership team visited with Chrys and Shelley at WPI to learn from our experiences. We’re honored that Camp Reach is being used as a launching point for another program!

Camp Reach held its inaugural pro-gram in 1997 with funding from the National Science Foundation. That

means the 2006 program will be our tenth anniver-sary— wow! We owe so much to our sponsors who have provided, in total, hundreds of thousands of dollars to sustain the program. That funding would not have been possible without the commitment of Terry Adams, a WPI alumna and WPI’s Director of Corporate and Foundation Relations. In addition, dedicated people like Dan (the Sandman) Gibson, Holly Ault and Allen Hoffman (Mobility for the Disabled), and Ken Stafford (Robotics) have been with the program all these years. Judy Shute in the Women’s Program Office provides key support be-hind the scenes. But the enthusiasm of our alumnae and their parents has been perhaps the most impor-tant force in keeping us strong.

Thanks to WPI student Gissel Morales, the festivities began with a getting-to-know-you Bingo game, followed by a murder mystery paper chromatography analysis that seemed to suggest Chrys was the culprit. (Bad science, I say!) We then moved to Gompei’s Gutters and, wow, the strikes and spares were there in abundance! (OK, and a few gut-terballs.) Thanks to all who came! It was great to see everyone and to keep our alumnae network strong.

&!;>=): I am going to be a senior in the fall at WPI. In May I came back from doing a project in Copenhagen, Denmark on solar energy and community reactions. If you have the opportunity to go abroad, definitely do it! I'm interning at GE Aviation in Lynn this summer, I'm working in aeromechanics (fan, com-pressor, and turbine blades). My suggestion to college students would be to take classes in engineering pro-grams such as Pro-engineer, Unigraphics, and ANSYS (modeling and solving programs); it will help in your first job/internship and looks good on your resume. This fall I start my senior design project (MQP to those at WPI.) I'm working with another woman to analyze the heat distribution across campus through the steam tun-nels. We're going to be looking for hot spots, amount of steam used per building, pressure, and temperature in the pipes. $$! >

$$#&!;=): I hope everyone is do-ing well and that all the campers, staff and alumnae are having a great summer so far! I just finished my sophomore year at Bowdoin

College – I can’t believe I’m halfway done with school, and am beginning to think about graduate/medical schools. This summer I will be at Bowdoin for ten weeks working on a

genetics research project with a friend and one of the professors in the Biology department. It’s a full time job, so it will be a lot of work and will be challenging, but I’m really looking

forward to it. It’s a great opportunity, and I’ll learn a lot! Happy Summer! ?$)! ;>< I'm currently in my 3rd year studying Electrical Engineering Biomedical Option at RIT. This summer I'm working as a co-op engineer for MKS Instruments in Rochester, NY. ?.: I am entering my junior year at the Uni-versity of Massachusetts (Amherst) as a Chemical En-gineering major. My past few summer and winter breaks have been spent working for a local laser company as a chemistry and IT intern. In a few weeks, I will be going to California to perform research for the University of California at Santa Barbara in the area of the directed evolution of biomineralizing enzymes. I hope all is well with Camp REACH. $$&@));><At WPI there is a Interactive Qualifying Project that is required of all third-year stu-dents, and they give you the opportunity to go away and complete it. I was selected and just spent March

through May in Puerto Rico where I was on a four stu-dent team working with the Department of Natural and Environmental Resources. For our project we worked with a community group - Los Ciudadanos pro Bosque del Plantio- from el Plantio in the Municipio de Toa Baja. They wanted our help in preserving an area of karst hills (mogotes) from being developed. My group mem-bers and I hiked through the for-est, which they called el bosque del plantio, and we made an inventory of plants, and even found an endangered tree species (the Palo de Rosa)! We also used GIS/GPS to create maps and overlay existing maps of wells in the area, and provided them with a map that showed how the karst forests were protecting the lower half of the Mu-nicipality from being flooded during rains. We were able to provide the community group with strong sup-port so they could bring it to their upcoming zoning hearing boards, and we hope that the information, will give the community a better advantage and accomplish their goal of having the mogotes saved from future de-velopment. Along with our scientific research, we con-ducted a survey of local educators in surrounding schools of the community to determine the outside and educational interest in the area, if a future educational center were to be built. The response was very positive and supportive, and we presented that information as well.

The project was amazing, and I met so many won-derful people with a beautiful love for their land, and an appreciation for the survival and health of their for-ests. Living in Puerto Rico was great, I was able to wake up to the ocean and I am thankful for the oppor-tunity that WPI gave me to attend such a project. Over-all my team ended up extremely close, successful, and grateful. We received an A for all of our hard work, and I don't want to have to write another paper in a long time!, but overall the grade didn't mean a thing, and it was the friendships and the love from the community group that made the project a success.

Now that I am home for the summer, I am working in the Neurobiology Department in one of the labs at UMass Medical School in Worcester, and it is interest-ing work that will hopefully provide me with a strong Major Qualifying Project so that I can graduate this coming school year. I hope everyone is doing well and having a wonderful (although rainy) summer so far! $$! =

B>!! ;> 3>/I just graduated from Mass Academy in May. Spending a year at WPI has made me feel more prepared to go to college, and I can't wait. I will be attending Johns Hopkins University in the fall. I plan on studying chemical engineering. So far this summer I have been working a lot as a waitress at Friendly's. I have also been doing Greek dancing. I started Greek dancing as my senior project for Mass Academy, but I've continued to pursue it after gradua-tion. This past weekend I had seven dance perform-ances at the Grecian festival. Also, I am looking for-ward to being an RA at Camp Reach this summer! &!0$: I am currently a senior at Leominster High School. I will be attending the University of Rhode Is-land in the fall, majoring in Elementary Education. I received a field hockey scholarship and I am very ex-cited about playing Division 1 field hockey. I earned 12 varsity letters at Leominster high school and graduated with honors. This summer I plan to work at my local recreation program and get in peak performance shape for college. !&%)!;>A3=<: I had a great senior year of high school. 5. (>): High school has been so hectic. As a sophomore I took five honors courses plus string orchestra. I became the editorials editor of our school newspaper, which has been an awesome experience. In addition, I started a chapter of Amnesty International at my high school. Amnesty fights to protect human rights worldwide, so it's a great cause to be involved in. We organized a Stu-dent Week of Action where the topic was Women's Is-sues and Rights. This summer I'm excited to return to Camp REACH as a TA! I'm so thrilled to come back! I hope everyone is doing well, and enjoy your summers! 67!!((!;>< This summer, I will be a TA for Reach. I'm really looking forward to it. Earlier, though, my parent's are going away without my brother and I for the first time for their 25th anniversary. Dur-ing that time, my brother and I are going to be going to the beach almost every day. I'm really excited. The beach is my favorite. I hope to see other girls from my year at the reunion! $$! =

!((I'm a freshman at Wachusett Regional High School this year. I was on the field hockey team in the fall and I also did a program called science seminar every Tuesday night. Seminar was a one hour lecture and then one hour on helping with science fair pro-jects. Besides that I do softball in the spring.

And then on Saturday, my school is holding its annual Spring Bazaar. On Sunday, the eighth graders are graduating; it is going to be really sad because the sev-enth and eight grade girls were really good friends. Lastly, there's the LAST WEEK OF SCHOOL! During the last week, we are going to have a field trip and school Spirit Week. The moments that I am dreading are when the teachers are going to give back the final exam grades (aaaaaahhh)!! Finally, there is the LAST DAY OF SCHOOL and then SUMMER VACATION (yaaaay)!!! I have no idea what I'm going to do during the summer, but I'm still excited. I am looking forward to seeing all of my Camp Reach friends at the summer reunion!!! HOPE ALL OF YOU HAVE AN AWESOME SUMMER!! "Just keep on smiling :)" 3(,Dear everyone, I miss you all! I know we still email and everything- and Nikki B I see you at school... but it's not the same as camp. Anyway... news from Boylston... last day of school was yesterday so I am officially an eighth grader.. yay and ick... we have to write and perform a play next fall. AHH!!!! This sum-mer I'm not doing anything that sounds anywhere near as fun as Reach. Oh well, the best things in life only happen once. Hey everyone.. Next year we have to do a forum/speech thing, and I'm going to do mine on Reach, so everyone please send me your favorite camp pics. U all rock! I am also doing a pledge drive for our trip. I am asking people to help by either pledging per 1,000 miles traveled (we'll be going 10,000 miles) or by getting pledges from their friends and family to help raise the money we need to open the first adoption agency. energy projects. I am eager to go back to Africa! Recently I was appointed Director of WPI’s Center for Educational Development and Assessment. I will continue to teach one course a year in the Mech. Eng. Department, but will also be responsible for providing support for enhancement of teaching and learning across campus. I’m excited about the new position! 25(.$;>=< I recently accepted a position with the Office for Residence Life at Villanova University where I will be the Area Coordinator for West Campus. I also recently completed my Master's from Indiana Univer-sity of Pennsylvania in Student Affairs in Higher Education.

;?%)<75)2F$!E I've finally completed my Ph.D. in Engineering! I gradu-ated from Wright State University on June 9. So now I'm officially "Dr. Muller" to all of my colleagues (although it's pretty informal where I work, so they usually just call me Amanda!) My husband, Paul, and I moved to Melbourne, Florida recently, where he is stationed at Patrick Air Force Base. I'm work-ing as a systems engineer for Northrop Grumman, a large defense contractor whose main function is to

make planes for the Air Force. It's a great job, and I really enjoy going to work every day! I get to use all of my math, science, and critical thinking skills, and actually see them applied to product devel-opment. Very cool! In my spare time, I've been running triathlons, which is a great way to stay in shape and relieve stress. You can check out pictures on my website, www.paulandamanda.com. I

hope all of you REACH alums are out there striving to be the best you can be! 6$,!!;>>< I can’t believe that I’m going to be a junior in the fall…and that I’m halfway done with college. I have a job starting Monday that I am really excited about! I'm going to be working at a lab in the Anesthesi-ology department at Children’s Hospital in Boston. The lab I’m working in is trying to use engineered tissue and stem cells to repair the atrio-ventricular node in the heart. I’m also going to have the opportunity to observe surger-ies at Children’s, which I am very excited about, because I am almost 100% sure I want to go to medical school when I graduate.
