Working Together for a Better Environment!

Along the coast of California, we end the summer each year by cleaning up after ourselves. Coastal Cleanup Day is the world’s largest volunteer day to protect our environment, and this year’s 35th annual event is coming right up, on Saturday, Sept. 21. On this one day, over the course of three hours, tens of thousands of volunteers come together to clean local beaches, rivers, creeks and parks. Each year, they remove some 1 million pounds of trash and recyclable material from California’s coast and inland waterways. As always, Harrison Industries urges you to join in from 9 a.m. to noon that day, as volunteers will meet up at more than 1,000 sites, along more than 2,000 miles of coast and inland shoreline, to remove all kinds of debris – everything from tiny plastics to submerged bicycles – thereby protecting wildlife from harm while taking care of our environment. We’re proud and happy to participate in this important event by providing free trash and recycling bin service at several sites in our service areas. A couple of tips: Bring your own reusable supplies (water bottle, gardening gloves, trash bucket, etc.); and for self-protection, wear a hat, sunscreen, gloves and closed-toe shoes. A hearty shout-out to the Ventura Chamber of Commerce for TASTE 2019, once again the most delicious event in the city! Held the evening of Aug. 29 at the Museum of Ventura County, downtown on Main Street, TASTE 2019 featured more than 45 restaurants, caterers, breweries, wineries, distilleries and eateries offering small bites and drink samples. There also was a photo booth and music under the stars – all against the backdrop of networking, making friends and enjoying the many tastes of Ventura. The vendors included Four Brix Winery, Vom Fass, 8th Devil Distributing, Firehouse Subs, Plan B Wine Cellar, Himalaya, Ventiki, Water’s Edge, Top This Chocolate, Red Brick Pizza, Blue Ridge Honey, Ventura Grocery Outlet, Li Mor Cakes, The Greek Mediterranean Steak & Seafood, Limon y Sal, Stonefire Grill, Winchesters Grill & Saloon, Busy Bee Cafe, Orosco’s de Ventura, Missy’s Cupcakes, Kona Ice, Spice-Topia and Secret Garden Coffee.

The annual two-and-a-half-hour TASTE festival drew hundreds to the museum courtyard. It was once again a spectacular event and a most satisfying evening. I’m proud of the Ventura Chamber staff and I was proud to once again be on the chamber board that put together such a happening event in downtown Ventura.

Camarillo is in a Fine State, According to Annual ReportCrime is down. Volunteerism is up. Local schools and bonds both are highly rated. The beautiful city-owned library is a boon to the community. The streets are well maintained and better than ever now, with the newly added bicycle lane on Pleasant Valley Road.

It was a glowing report at the Camarillo Chamber of Commerce’s annual State of the City luncheon, held on Sept. 5 at the Spanish Hills Country Club.

Camarillo Mayor Kevin Kildee presented the 2019 State of the City report to an overflow crowd. I was happy to be among the Harrison contingent attending the lovely event, along with Jim, Myron, George and Lynn Harrison.

Boys & Girls Club Has a Happy 51st Birthday Celebration

Congratulations to the Boys & Girls Club of Santa Clara Valley on its 51st birthday! This wonderful community youth organization celebrated No. 51 with its second annual “Happy Birthday Happy Hour at the Ranch.” Held from 5 to 7 p.m. on Thursday, Sept. 5, at beautiful Limoneira Ranch in Santa Paula, the benefit event included food, drinks and live music, with all proceeds going to help the children of Fillmore, Piru and Santa Paula. A wonderful cause and a very fun event! We are extremely proud to be a longtime major sponsor of the Boys & Girls Club of SCV which provides daily access to safe, supervised activities that guide area children to become productive, responsible and caring citizens. A record crowd of 280 people attended “State of the County 2019,” held Aug. 1 in an expanded banquet space at the Courtyard of Marriott in Oxnard. Hosted by the Ventura County Taxpayers Association, this year’s packed, two-hour luncheon event drew Ventura County Supervisors Kelly Long, Linda Parks and John Zaragosa as well as city council members and other civic leaders from across the county. It began with an introduction by VCTA Board Chair Ron Golden and included a keynote speech by Ventura County Executive Officer Mike Powers. Powers touched on many aspects of managing Ventura County, including the budget, the general plan and the census. He also went deeper to discuss how a series of major incidents over the past two years, including the area’s devastating fires and floods and the Borderline bar mass shooting, has ultimately proved to be unifying, bringing all corners of the county together in our times of need.

Powers attributed the record crowd in the room to the growth and staying power of the countywide unification that he and others have observed since the first major fire erupted in Ventura in December 2017. “Connecting Our Region to Collectively Strengthen Our Community” was the title of the first slide in Powers’ presentation. Harrison was once again well represented at the annual event, which is always a wonderful gathering of citizens and civic leaders from every corner of our great county. The depth of the discussion and the large group sharing in it made this year’s State of the County gathering feel particularly special.

The unique and beautiful Pacifica Graduate Institute was the location and the focus of the Carpinteria Valley Chamber of Commerce’s latest Legislative Breakfast. George and Tom Harrison were happy to attend this outstanding event held from 7:30 to 9:30 a.m. Friday, Aug. 9, on the Pacifica institute’s verdant Lambert Road campus in the city’s foothills. The Harrisons are proud to serve such a beautiful and well-run city as Carpinteria. Sponsored by Montecito Bank & Trust, the sold-out event featured a keynote speech by Joseph Cambray, president and CEO of Pacifica, who discussed the history and future possibilities of the institute. Pacifica is a private, for-profit graduate school with two local campuses. It offers master’s and doctoral degrees in the fields of clinical psychology, counseling, mythological studies, depth psychology and the humanities. It is accredited by the Western Association of Schools and Colleges. A tour of the campus followed the slate of presentations by Cambray and two other civic leaders: Monique Limón, Assemblymember for the 37th District, who presented a legislative and education update; and Carpinteria Mayor Wade Nomura, who reviewed the city’s newest proposed projects. The Legislative Breakfast program is designed to brief the community on the latest business trends, legislative updates, economic development news and other relevant local issues. It’s also a great opportunity to network over a hearty breakfast.
