I would like you to write a story using the following sentence as your opener. Remember to think about your

punctation and use that wonderful imagination I know you have! I look forward to reading your story! 😊

Success criteria:

1. To punctuate all your sentences correctly.

2. To begin your sentences in different ways.

3. To use language to engage and excite the reader.

‘It was only then that I realised that things were not quite as they seemed.’

Comprehension activities:

Ramadan:

Ramadan is the ninth month of the Islamic calendar, when Muslims fast between sunrise and sunset every day.

Fasting during Ramadan is the fourth pillar of Islam. There are five pillars, which help guide Muslims to put

their faith into action.

Ramadan is called the month of the Qu’ran.

The Five Pillars of Islam

The Five Pillars of Islam are five obligations which Muslims must carry out in order to live a good life according

to Islam.

Fasting during Ramadan:

Fasting means not eating food or drink during daylight hours. It is common to have one meal just before the sun

rises and another meal directly after the sun has set. Fasting is important to Muslims as a sign of self-

discipline and generosity. It is also a time to think of those who do not have enough to eat and often go hungry.

Muslims believe:

• that their good actions bring greater reward during this month than at any other time of the year;

• that it is easier to do good during Ramadan;

• that they should try to give up bad habits during Ramadan;

• that they will become better Muslims by praying more and reading the Qu’ran.

A social occasion

Ramadan is a time to get together with family and friends. The fast is broken each evening by sharing a meal.

The end of Ramadan is an important religious holiday. The celebration is called Eid al-Fitr. Eid al-Fitr means

‘festival of the breaking of the fast’.

Did you know?

Those who are ill, elderly or pregnant are not expected to fast during Ramadan.

There’s a Fire in the Forest

There’s a fire in the forest!

The creatures are fleeing

The flames close behind

With the wind driving onward.

From underbrush up to

The high moving tree-tops

The fire’s surging forward.

There’s a fire in the forest;

The whole woods are burning.

The whole world is burning!

The creatures are seeking

The safety of streams

Beyond the hot burning.

The creatures are fleeing;

They are labouring, straining

To reach the cool river

They know just beyond them,

To escape the fierce burning,

To reach the cool stream

For which they are yearning.

Cross curricular activities:

Lowry

Lowry was an English artist and he painted scenes that showed working people and working life in

Britain. His people often looked like matchstick men and he used lots of greys and browns to

represent the hard lives of the poor people. The landscapes he painted were often focused on

factories and industrial places where workers came and went about their business.

Can you sketch a piece of artwork to reflect that of Lowry’s work?

Remember to:

• Press on lightly, so if you make a mistake it

is easier to rub out.

• Think carefully about what emotion you want

the picture to represent and show.

• Think carefully about the perspective of the

building and people, if the buildings are

further away, they will look smaller than the

ones up close.

• Take your time! Art is not a race.

South America

You have learnt a lot about South America and the fascinating activities you can enjoy whilst there.

Your task is to pick one country from South America and write a post card back home to your chosen

person.

Remember you need to think about:

• Your spelling, punctuation and grammar.

• Range of sentence types (De:De, the more, the more, last word, first word etc)

• Interesting ways to start off your sentences – think about those fronted adverbials.

• Cohesion and formality- will it be formal or informal?

Plan your postcard below and think about the detail you want to inlude.

Activity 1

Lara fitted a sensor to monitor her pulse rate.

She recorded the reading from the sensor every three minutes in a table:

Time (minutes)

Pulse rate (beats per minute)

0 68

3 68

6 102

9 102

12 83

15 68

18 68

She then plotted these readings on a graph:

Graph to show pulse rate against time

What was Lara’s pulse rate at the start?

Year 6 work pack 3

43

After three minutes, Lara started to exercise. How can you tell this from the graph?

How long did Lara exercise?

When did Lara’s pulse get back to normal?

What do you think happened to Lara’s breathing when she was exercising?

Why do you think this happened?

Lara also went flushed and sweaty when she was exercising. Why was this?

Challenge Does my heart always beat the same?

Sit down, find your pulse and record how many beats you feel in one minute. Record this in the table below.

Now check your pulse when you are doing other things, and again record your results in the table below.

Challenge Does everyone cross his or her thumbs in the same way?

Did you know that the way we cross over our thumbs varies? Some cross the left over the right, and some cross the right over the left.

Investigate which way your family at home cross their thumbs. Maybe you could call some family and friends and ask how they do it too. Record the results in the table below:

Name Left thumb over right Right thumb over right
