PORPHYRITIC GABBRO
Green - grey, fine - coarse grained, massive rock.
2-3 mm. stumpy amphiboles (? hornblende after pyroxene
set in matrix of finer grained (~ 1mm.) epidote/clino;
albite, chlorite, leucoxene, minor quartz £nd ? calcit
"Spotty " texture.
Occasional scattered pale feldspar phenocrysts. Size
up to 10 mm. generally prismatic with vague, fuzzy
outlines .
Heavily altered to albite + clinozoisite.
Fairly typical of unit observed on surface eg. Crescer
Island.
30.0 -1 33.0 Irregular quartz veining. Gabbro is chloritic. Veining
generally at shallow angles to core axis.
BASALT
Green - grey, fine grained ( 0.5 mm.) slightly sheared
and schistose rock. Fine acf*'"Mite, chlorite, quartz
albite and pinkish leucoxene. Slightly calcareous in

morphing plag.
Cut by up to 20% quartz + calcite veins.
Basalt has brecciated appearance with qtz. + calcite
cement .

Pale green * buff vfg rock. Sheared, sch:.stose.
Consists of vfg silica and carbonate, with 5% diss po
streaks, and l-5mm. lenses of grey >clear quartz.
Some areas containing ?mafic minerals.
80m. schistosity at 50 to CA. Mineral lineation
plunge 70 to N.
Could have been originally a siliceous rock, rather
than basalt.
QUARTZ VEIN (?)
White, massive, cloudy quartz, with patches; and bands
of green actinolite, po, calcite, esp. near ends.
Appears to be parallel to schistosity and nay be, in
part, intraformational "sediment".
PORPHYRITIC BASALT
Green grey, slightly bleached, fine gd. (<im.) massive
i '. rock. Mafic, granular(?)matrix containing Locally
10% carbonate, with scattered 5-15mm. whitt- plag pheno-
crysts (now albite + qtz + c linozoisite) .
Cut by occ -> frequent thin (l-5mm.), white: quartz +
calcite veins. Often cut core at 30-60 to CA in all
directions.

MIXED TUFF/FRAGMENTAL
Alternating, variable, horizons of fine-mod gd. mafic
and (?) felsic tuff, chert, and f ragmental.s . Prominent
foliation and shearing. Irregular, contorted and len-
soid quartz (-fcarbonate) veining is common, usually
subparallel to schistosity. Schistosity parallel to
compositional layering (bedding).
Mainly derived from mafic rocks. Abundant epidole.
Some horizons appear silicified.**162.0 - 167.78 CONGLOMERATE (?)
Elliptical to lensoid fragments (rounded) of grey-
green quartz set in matrix of actinolite quartz +
leucoxene. Some fragments appeat to be s:.licified
mafics. Frag, size 10 - 30 mm, 40 - 50% by volume
of rock.

coarser gd, with chl and epidole; almost g£;bbroic.
BASALT
Green, fine gd , mafic rock. Somewhat cleared, and cut
by irregular quartz + calcite + epidote veins.
Schistosity at 60 to CA. Veining parallel to and
subparallel to this.
SULPHIDE - BEARING CHERT
Thin intraformational "sediment". Finely bedded/
laminated grey chert and act/chl rich layers. ^10% py
as l-5mm thick bands.
Layering at 54 to CA parallel to schistosity in basall
MASSIVE BASALT
Green-grey, fine grained (< 0.5mm) massive mafic rock.
Appears siliceous/silicif ied. Small quart:: phenocryst:
at upper (holewise) contact. Cut by occ. high angle
quart z+calcite veins.

veins, mostly 1-15 mm wide.
Cut core at 33-40° to CA, subparalled to schistosity.
34 m schistosity at 40° to CA. Mineral lineation
plunge 88° N on schistosity plane.
45 m schistosity at 38° to CA. Mineral lineation
plunge 60" N on schistosity plane.
Traces of py as occ. diss 1 mm cubes.
Basalt is calcareous, but not bleached or silicified.

Abrupt, conformable contacts.
? QUARTZ PORPHYRY
Pale grey - buff coloured, massive, vfg, .siliceous rock
Contains 1-5% small (l-5min) colourless quartz pheno-
crysts and some ? quartz pseudomorphing foldspar phx.
20% micro-wormy ? amphibole/chlorite forming irregular
mesh.
Rock is ^recciated and cut by two ages (?.' of veins.
(1) Micro veining/stockwork of grey - clear quartz
with minor po in veins and disseminated in rock.
Also abundant calcite.
(2) An apparently later, coarser veining of quartz +
ankerite + po, cp, py, sp. Both contacts conformable.
GRAPHITE SCHIST
Grey-black, fine gd schist. Fine laminations caused b}
variable graphite and quartz content..
20-30% finely laminated and streaky po wii:h minor
cp, sp, py, and coarse asp cubes at upper (holewise)
contact.

Possibly sheared, altered basalt.
Schistosity at 53° to CA at 69m.
Mineral lineation plunge 90° on schistosity plane.
PORPHYRITIC DOLERITE
Grey-green, fine grained (0.5mm) mafic rock. Scatterec
5mm white feldspar phenocrysts. Rock contains 1-5%
finely diss carbonate. Intrusive chill-ad contacts,
approx parallel to schistosity.
MASSIVE BASALT
Green-grey fine-medium gd . (l-2mm) actinolite, chloritt
