we were to select a tree that has expressive form and textures and then creating a composite live study drawing in tone consisting of three elements- the entire tree, and two details which were a leaf and the stem of the tree. the three elements were to be arranged gracefully and the use of tone was to unite the drawing so it creates a harmonious hole.

the assignment was to create a contour elevation study of a portion of the east facade of the physical science building of the dvc campus. the goal was to develop a successful method and ability to analyze complex proportional relationships such as building elevations, and to continue advancing in composition, line weights, detail development, and texture through contour.

the assignment was to cast shadows of a three dimensional object, and to study geometric forms. we were to use a light pencil for the overall figure then use black ink for constructing the shadows. the goal was to learn how to cast shadows, constructing guide lines for shadow boundaries, coordinating views in plan and elevation, and to learn hatching techniques.

after observing the work of the destijl architects and laszlo moholy nagy, we were asked to construct our own view of our cube model. that we first started by drawing well drafted lines using a 4h pencil on water color paper. the drawing needed two elevations of the cube model, a plan view, and an axonometric view. once the drawing was complete, we were to render the drawing with water colors.

after we constructed a model based on a series of folding planes, we were to draw two views of our model on water color paper. i drew two side views and then rendered the drawing with water colors. we were to pay close attention to the composition of the image and how the views are placed on the page. we were to show either physical relationships between the two views or to create alignments that explore graphic relationships in the composition of the painting. we also included diagonal lines at 45 degrees to represent shadows and depth.

we were asked to design a resort for guests training at a horse ranch, and for horse owners who are boarding their animals long term. the new addition was to be a hybrid that represents the old buildings of the farm with modern architecture being the design inspiration. we were to consider the relationship between the landscape and the built elements. the model was made at 1/32” scale using 4 ply museum board and the model consisted of a hotel lobby, restaurant/saloon, and hotel building.

the assignment was to define the volume of a 3-1/2” x 3-1/2” x 3-1/2” cube in space with planes in three dimensions. the idea behind this project was thinking of a solid cube and how it reacts in space if it were to explode. we studied the relationships that it presented and how even with different movements the model is still defining a cube in space.

AnalysisHayes Valley HistoryIn the late 1800s, Hayes Valley was a tract of land owned by Thomas Hayes, with a park that burned down in the year City Hall broke ground -- 1872. In the early 20th century, the Western Addition area adjacent to Hayes Valley became a vibrant African American community, described sometimes as a Harlem-style renaissance in San Francisco. The neighborhood later succumbed to controversial redevelopment.
After the earthquake in 1989, a section of noisy and ugly freeway that ran through Hayes Valley was demolished. The neighborhood was reborn of the rubble and is now a thriving residential and commercial district.
Hayes Valley PeopleHayes Valley is a mix of old time residents, young professionals and families. Absinthe Brasserie and Jardiniere have two of the best bars in the city. At the same time, you’ll see strollers and parents with young kids in the local shops and cafes.
Residents of Hayes Valley are protective of the Bohemian character and community ethic that still thrive. The Hayes Valley Neighborhood Association is active in local issues.
Hayes Valley EnvironmentThe Hayes Valley area is full of Victorian homes. There are many tree-lined streets and quiet areas off the main commercial strips. In spite of busy retail zones, on weekdays the neighborhood still feels like a sleepy enclave.
Hayes Valley borders on some areas that are considered sketchy at night, so the usual safety measures should be taken if walking in the area after hours.
For more specific information on neighborhood safety, the San Francisco Police Department has an interactive Crime Map where you can search for statistics by area and zip code.

the equestrian resort which I talked about before also needed 3-d renderings which show interior and exterior spaces. the renderings were first modeled in google sketchup then rendered in kerkythea to give it a more finished look.

in order to do well in architecture, an individual must understand the essences of photography. the series of photographs which are presented within this portfolio are made with understanding dynamic photography and how the values of architecture such as form and composition relate to photography. this image was shot with an slr camera and then manipulated in photoshop using several layers and using the channel mixer to change several channel colors. the program textorizer was also used as a concept idea for my portfolio cover.

this locker shot was used with the photography style “shallow depth of field”. the foreground is blurred while the surrounding area appears sharp. the viewer closely concentrates first on the foreground then to the middle and back. the blurred locker combo gets more attention than the rest of the image because of its dynamic view. the manipulation of layers and channel mixers was also used in photoshop.

this course covered the methods of fabrication for architectural projects in metal, wood, plastic, and other materials. it was also an introduction to shop safety, machine and tool operation, and small scale design and construction. the idea behind my design was having a small side couch lamp stand while also making a storage space for books and magazines and other items that I can place in the middle of the stand. it was made completely out of wood.

working in an architectural firm has furthered my knowledge in architecture by giving me an understanding of areas such as marketing and business in architecture, an introduction to construction documents, detailing, and product specifications. my knowledge in autocad has also excelled by working in a firm. this series of pr pieces were created in adobe indesign to be put into the pr folders which are given to potential clients to further expand their knowledge in the type of designs the firm has.
