The Cooperative Fund of New England (CFNE) is a revolving loan fund, founded in 1975 to support grassroots, community-controlled economic devel-opment in New England. The Fund provides vital financial resources and technical support to co-ops and nonprofit organizations that serve their com-munities. A co-op is an autonomous association of persons united voluntarily to meet their common economic, social, and cultural needs and aspira-tions through a jointly owned and democratically controlled enterprise.
You can help support cooperative development in our region by investing in CFNE or making a tax deductible contribution, by encouraging your co-op or community organization to apply for a loan from CFNE, or simply by purchasing products from cooperative businesses in our region.
What is a Worker Cooperative?
Worker cooperatives are business entities that are owned and controlled by their members--the peo-ple who work in them. The two central characteris-tics of worker cooperatives are: (1) workers invest in, own, and reap the profit from the business; and (2) decision-making is democratic, generally adher-ing to the principle of one worker-one vote.
When you spend your dollars at a worker-owned cooperative, you’re participating in a very different kind of business model - one that is democratically owned and controlled by its workers and organized to serve the needs of people before profit. Please consider doing business with a worker co-op and put your dollars to work in your community.
What follows is a sampling of democratic workplaces in New England. For more information, please visit our website at: www.coopfund.coop
