Dedication page

I would like to dedicate these works to Huntsville Middle School for giving me inspiration for some of the works in this book. I would also like to thank

the author John Steinbeck for giving me inspiration for my last piece “Travels by me” from his book travels with charley. My final thanks goes to

Ms. Sullivan, for giving me time each day to write.

Part one: Newspaper

Creations

This part is dedicated to newspaper articles that I wrote throughout the year. These articles were edited and published through my school newspaper.

All of the writing in this section is articles. Some are longer, some are shorter. Most of these articles were fine tuned for publishing. This section is

completely dedicated to my love of writing.

Chaos in Art

The faces in art are hung proud in the hallway by Mr. Taylor’s class. The

faces started as normal, boring, and uncreative. Then, they changed to symbolize

the loss of order in the book, The Lord of the Flies.

They are now unique in their own way. Others are coming up with new designs

and ways of making theirs more creative than they already are. The faces are

starting to become more creative and different from each other every day. The

faces truly show the creativity of all of the students in eighth grade.

New Lunch Laws

Those poor kids with all their condiments being outlawed in school

(hopefully you understand sarcasm). They lost all their condiments like salt, pepper,

ketchup, ranch, and mustard but ironically we still have pizza that’s filled with high

sodium and pizza sauce. Maybe we will have a black market for (not drugs) but salt

and pepper packets. These students must be feeling so mistreated for being fed

such healthy food.

I personally think that the new laws may be kind of better. They have

healthier ingredients, less sodium, and don’t make you feel heavy after you eat. On

the bad side I realized that the ale cart has gotten longer. The cafeteria workers

noticed that also. The new food laws have caused quite a debate whether they are

good or bad. Many students think they are bad because of the loss of their

favorite condiments and want the old lunch laws back with condiments and

hamburgers. Most students may not think of the work the lunch ladies go through

to make us lunches or take their point of view.

“The food is easier to make now that we have set recipes and guidelines sent

from the government,” said cafeteria worker Charlotte Hudson. The program has

affected everyone with “having to put out more food in the salad bar,” and “the

students eating less.” Charlotte has noticed the change first. The new food laws

have made a permanent change on lunch in the Huntsville School District.

Many students want the old lunches back and so do the cafeteria workers. “I

want them back because students will be eating more” responded Charlotte

Hudson. I would also want the old laws back for better lunches. “An ideal lunch

program would be more protein and a better selection of fruits and vegetables.” I

agree with her, but we might just have to live with the new program. Or we might

get our own lunch program.

Creative Science Every year we make science fair prodjects for one of our final grades of the

year. Some students just throw theirs together at the last second, but some

students make theirs creative and nicely put together. The more creative science

fair prodjects deserved to be highlighted.

Some students have great ideas for the science fair. Like Wesley Ellis, who

is doing a project of how video games affect concentration. Students will take a

test, play a video game for ten minutes and then take another test. Then the

scores are compared. What makes this project creative is that you get to play

games for science.

Most of the students do boring old and overused projects that are not

creative. And most students don’t focus on the look or the science in their project.

But there are a few students who stand out and make their project creative and

new.

Page 15: Works of Me

This great artist has influenced many people through his work. Norman

Rockwell’s work has inspired many new and old artists by giving them a way to

express and understand how to show emotions in their work. This great artist has

created many works such as Rosie the Riveter, The 4 Freedoms and First Love.

Norman Rockwell was born in 1894 in New York City and died in 1978. He

began his art career at the age of fourteen when he enrolled in art classes. In two

years he was studying at the National Academy of Art. Norman quickly excelled in

art creating many paintings. Before his sixteenth birthday Norman Rockwell

created his first commission of four Christmas cards. By 1916 he painted his first

cover for the Saturday Evening Post. Norman Rockwell greatly loved what he did

and showed it in cards, covers, and other expressions. He even has an exhibit

opening in crystal bridges on March 9th.

All in all, Norman Rockwell has greatly influenced art and artists through his

work. He generated great emotion through his work and his work continues to show

an influence on artist now as well as everyone who looks and understands his work.

Norman Rockwell is a great artist, was a great artist, and will always be a great

artist no matter how life progresses or how the world changes.

Everyone enjoys Crystal Bridges when they get there. They love

the beautiful sights, the scenery, and especially the art. Crystal

Bridges is a great experience. Best of all its free to go and see the

beautiful artwork!

Many students have been able to go to this museum thanks to

their hard work and determination to art. The reason these students

were able to go with Mr. Taylor on the field trip was because they had

improved most this year or had always tried their hardest, but some

were picked at random just to be fare. Maddie Tvrz said she was

picked because “I’ve been working very hard in art and yearbook”. She

also described the trip as “very fun and edumicational.” Many students

from both 7th and 8th grade went to the trip. 7th grader Casey Moppin’s

favorite part of the trip was the trails because she was able to go and

see other stuff.

The trip was great (in my opinion). The art was spectacular and it

was just a good experience. The famous art at Crystal Bridges will

always create wonder and awe in the minds of everyone who sees it.

Handicapped Incident

The handicapped door in my school is broken so now there is no way for

anyone with a disability to get to school. The handicapped door was the LAZYEST

way for students to get into the sixth grade building. They didn’t care that they

were destroying the only way for handicapped people to get into the building.

Then just a week ago a terrible incident happened. The handicapped door

actually shut on someone!!! Eighty year old Sarah Everheart who was handicapped

into her wheelchair due to a knee injury went to the office to try to get her

grandson Jacob Everheart enrolled to Huntsville Middle School. She went to the

handicapped door to go into the building. She pressed the button and both

handicapped doors opened. As she went through the second door she heard a creek

from the door. Then all of a sudden the second handicapped door slammed shut on

her arm breaking it and crushing one wheel on her wheelchair. The office heard her

screams and called an ambulance. When the ambulance arrived they realized that

they had to get her to a hospital immediately. The school was forced to fix the

handicapped door that the STUDENTS broke.

Do you really want this to happen to people because of you? I don’t think you do.

You shouldn’t use the handicapped door unless you are handicapped yourself. The

tragedy that happened is only the first in a long line of accidents that could happen

if you don’t stop using the handicapped door when you’re not handicapped.

Part Two: Times that I… This section is full of “The time I” type of writing. This section was created by me to tell more about myself. Most of the writing in this section is short and to the point. These writings show parts of me that help you understand and visualize me. This section creates me.

Positive Dirt

A time when getting dirty was a positive thing was at Camp

War Eagle when my rugby team played in the rain. Our team was up by

one and I was goalie. The other team was angry and ready to win. Their

faces were red and steaming. Our team was dead tired and losing the

ball easily. At the last second the other team shot. With the ball flying

through the air I leapt. Grabbing the ball in midair I fell into a giant

mud puddle giving our team the win. I was completely covered in mud.

But I realized that it was good. It was mud of victory

Page 22: Works of Me

Tricky Time Management A time when I had to use my time management skills was in

between classes every day at school. I had to use my time management

skills to quickly go from one side of the campus to the other. Giving

myself time to go to my locker. If I had to do something between

classes I need to plan ahead or do what I need to do faster. I usual

schedule was go from my class, to my locker, then to my next period

class without wasting time. I would always have to manage my time so

that I was not late to any of my classes. Most people are born with

invaluable wealth of knowledge of being able to manage their time

wisely while fitting in anything else that they need to like most

students between their classes. But need not, there are others, like

me, who have to plan out what’s going to happen. If they’re going to be

late, or early, or just on time. Which is nearly impossible if you are like

me and don’t understand what you’re going to be until your there

yourself. Most of the days between classes I didn’t know what I was

going to be. I just had to use, and mostly develop, my time management

skills. That is when I had to use my time management skills.

Page 23: Works of Me

Short Term Work A lot of people now have to do work in the short term. Like

finishing a paper, doing a last minute business meeting, constructing a

house etc. Some people don’t even realize that they are doing hard

work, or just work, in a short term period. I have seen people

struggling to do something in a day but working hard just to get it

done. It is actually hard to do something at the “last minute”.

I myself have had to work hard in the short term. It wasn’t

fun or easy. It was hard work. It was the end of my last semester as a

seventh grader. Only two weeks left. Science fair projects were due

and I wasn’t even started yet! I had less than a week before grades

had to be put in. That meant that Science fair would be due in just one

tiny week. Who would’ve guessed a short term goal?

I had what I needed; an idea, backboard, and a lot of hard

work ready to use. I quickly did my experiments down to the last detail

so that I could get as accurate as possible. Then, I printed everything

out; pictures, title, conclusion, observation, etc. I made my backboard

look great. Like a work of art hanging in Crystal Bridges.

When I turned it in, I was proud of myself for doing such a

great job on it. Which really made me happy because I worked hard in

such a short period of time.

The science fair projects were graded. I was excited to see

what I got. To my luck I got a 90. But sadly I only got participant. That

was when I worked hard in the short term.

Part Three: Writing of me

This section is full of short stories that I created. Some are

funny, some are serious, and some are both. This is the section that I

am most proud of. These stories bring you in depth to different places

and times. Some are based of books and some I thought of myself. All

of these stories show my creative writing skills.

Juror Four

The courtroom was cold and dark. Abandoned from today’s

case. A man was tried with murder. He had been tried for robbery

twice before and been proven guilty both times. So why wouldn’t he be

guilty this time? Although this time he was actually innocent. The man

knew in his heart that he was. He was a “bad person” as most people in

the courtroom were thinking. As soon as he had walked into the

courtroom he was “guilty” so to speak. Once you are tried for a case,

many people already doubt your innocence. Besides the racist and

predijust of the jury, his background alone would put him in prison for

life or even death. He relied on one juror alone to vote him not guilty.

That juror was a black just as he was, and seemed to hear him speak

the truth instead of the lies that the other jurors forced into his

mouth. Juror number ten seemed to be the most racist person in the

room. He would listen carefully, but when the man on trial made eye

contact with him he would just look away as if it never happened. Most

of the time he would say rude comments about the black man or look at

him like he was a virus waiting to spread.

The next day, the vote was taken. The guard walked out of the

jury room, gave the note to the judge and left. The judge read the

paper with a shocked look on his face. Then he read “The jury finds the

defendant not guilty of all charges.” After it was read the jury came

out of the jury room. Four seemed to be crying. With joy and sadness

holding a picture of a teenage boy.

Castaway Survivor

As I sailed off to the island where Kali and Bailie crashed a week

ago, well I think it was the island. It had only been a week and they had

food and water. What could possibly happen? Me and my crew were

joking about how there was civilization on the island and that Kali and

Bailie couldn’t see an island right in front of them.

We arrived at the island. Me and my crew realized that someone

was yelling something. We ventured closer to the sound. “I wanna try to

fly!” is what was said. Along with monkey screams. Then we see them. I

realize with disbelief as Kali, Bailie, and a monkey jump off a mountain.

They fell to fast for me to rescue them. We ran to the spot where

they fell. All were dead except for a monkey. It slowly crawled to me

with one good arm from where it was underneath kali.

We decided to leave them all except the monkey who had a tag

that said spankey. The monkey was put in a full body cast for the rest

of its life while we lived out our lives in the Bahamas.

Super storm

We heard on the news that it was coming. It was only going to be a

category one but it was larger than any other hurricane and it was

combined with an artic front. This was going to be bad.

In one hour we were going to be hit. At least that’s what the

news said. The storm was picking up speed and so was the hurricane.

There was trouble brewing in the sky and I was about to see how bad

the trouble was.

In less than ten minutes, the storm was here. It howled and

hammered at my doors. My house was well equipped to handle a storm

of this magnitude, but my wife and children weren’t. The storm started

howling again. This time it was louder and more aggervated since its

last attempt was a failure. All of a sudden it got dark.

The demonic beast inside the storm came out. The front hit and

the hurricane came. Water and snow started to poor down creating

freezing rain. I heard hail falling and windshields break. The storm got

too aggressive for my family to stay in my house any longer. We had to

reach the storm cellar.

We quickly ran out the back door. There was no flooding yet. We

were still afraid. Hail rained on us like crazing. When we reached the

cellar I let everyone inside first so that I could catch one last glance

of Super Storm Sandy.

Page 30: Works of Me

Only One

The entire jury room was convinced that the man was guilty of the

murder. The sad innocent man was going to get the death penalty if his

newfound lawyer couldn’t get him out of this dispute.

Two boring and long months of trial lead to this. The man’s lawyer

was worn thin through this. The only thing that could save the man now

was a DNA test of the knife that was used to kill the poor, dead soul.

It was due back in a week but the final trial was today. The jury’s mind

was made up.

The jury rose and said “Due to a certain misunderstanding and lack

of agreement we cannot yet make a decision.” The innocent man was

instantly released that at least someone knew the truth.

Travels by Me

I didn’t know exactly where the train was going. After paying my fare, I simply

stood on the platform waiting for it to whisk my away from somewhere, anywhere

but here. And that’s when it happened. My journey began.

With my travel journal in my back pocket I realized I was going to do what I

always dreamed of. Travel where I wanted.

First, I headed on the train to Amarillo, Texas, my first stop. The train ride

was long and boring. Nothing to do but talk to complete strangers. I met some

people who entertained me along the way. Some called me crazy and stupid, some

were jealous, and some just looked in awe.

It excited me really, just to get up and travel. I guess I’m no different from

the people who looked in awe on the train. I was jealous of myself.

When the train stopped at Amarillo. By that time it was the seventh train I

had to be on. I made my way by rental car to the Cadillac ranch. When I looked at

the cars, I carefully expected each one, the names, artwork, some were thrown

together just being a name, and some were carefully crafted to perfection.

Realizing that I would make no good contribution to the artwork on the cars, I just

wrote one letter of my name on every car, desecrating the beautiful art that is the

Cadillac ranch.

I gave the rental car back to the dealership. I had no more business in

Amarillo. I walked next door to a motel and rented a room. It was no five star

room, with little soaps and satin sheets. It was a room with a bed. Strange and

cheesy enough, the bed took quarters for a five minute vibrating mattress. I tried

it, but sadly it only made noise. So for the next five minutes all I heard was

scratching metal. I stripped, took a shower, and went to sleep.

The next morning I decided to catch a train to New Mexico. Only to see

Radiator Springs and a museum.

On the train, I realized that it was going to be a long trip. Almost everyone

spoke Spanish. I wasn’t going to ask what the man beside me was saying. I

definitely wasn’t going to ask any racism questions. But since I speak a bit of

Spanish I kept a conversation going with a man who was traveling like I was. It was

still boring and lonesome on the train, even with company.

Page 32: Works of Me

When the train stopped, I said my goodbyes to the man that was also traveling

and headed to the New Mexico Art Museum. I hoped to see “The Mother Road”

also known as Route 66.

The museum was filled with great artwork. Even better than the ones I saw at

the Caddilac ranch. Sadly, the museum was closing so I was only able to see the

first room.

With it being just twelve o-clock on a Sunday afternoon, I headed for

Radiator Springs.

The town sat exactly beside route 66. I went to a little shop and bought a little

car paperweight and a Mountain Dew. I paid the old, scraggly man at the register

and left.

I started on my trip to go to the space needle. But halfway there I almost got

caught in a storm. I had to call my trip to a close. Ending my favored journey.
