Workshop Phonics Activity Suggestions: Use lots of songs, chants and stories, so children know the sounds and words of the language! First letters Have a collection of objects and/or pictures for each letter of the alphabet. Play games of bingo with letters. Use phoneme fans. Try sorting objects based on their first letter sounds. Play games of eye spy. After children can blend and segment orally try games and activities using the letters: Segmenting After children know the sounds of a few letters, try playing games using phoneme fans, phoneme frames and cut out letters or get children to write their own words in frames. Blending Help children to sound out and blend simple cvc words by preparing some on cards (see the suggested cvc words). Have words around the classroom in displays for children to read themselves. Play matching words and pictures games. Tricky words Teach a few words each week and play games to help children remember them.
