Not only does incorporating evaluation into a program demonstrate impact but it also can help make sound decisions for the future of the program and alert you to any problem areas within the program. In this course, participants will learn how to define success for their program. Through a hands-on approach, participants will learn how to create logic models and develop evaluation measures for their existing or new program. The purpose of this course is to orient partici- pants to the proposal writing process. Attendees will learn about each of the common components of a proposal and what makes them most effective. There will be an in-depth review and discussion of needs statements which are critical to the proposal process as they focus on the purpose of the intervention and the population to be served. 3 Continuing Education contact hours for licensed social workers

Location: Room 152, Level 3, Health Sciences

Presenter: Joaniko Kohchi, MPhil, LCSW Infant Mental Health Endorsement, Clinical Men-tor, New York Zero-to-Three Network

Workshop Description:

This course will offer a review of current thinking about the transmissibility of trauma from parents or grandparents to their offspring, and consider the benefits of intervening as soon as possible in a child’s life in order to establish a strong and healthy foundation for the growing parent-child relationship. We will review principles of infant and early childhood mental health, illustrating through case example how they inform the relational approach to parent-child dyads, and how building a parent’s reflective capacity nourishes the parent’s ability to be empathic and to guide a child in a positive, affirming manner. We will consider the importance of relationship-based, reflective, trauma-informed assessment and intervention, and discuss decision-making when choosing interventions.

This workshop explores how traumatic experience is the leading cause of addiction and provides a strong foundational understanding of the impact of social experi-ence on individuals and families. We will critique the medical model and legal models regarding substance abuse, and discuss how our approach as social workers in both the treat-ment and legal arenas needs to change in order to be more trauma informed and responsive to the needs of individuals, families and communities suffering the effects of substance abuse disorders.
