Progression of WWI Shifts:US Entry and Russian

Revolution

Warm-Up:

Think about the recent revolutions in the Middle East along with others we’ve studied this year…

– What factors led to these revolutions?

– Are they justified? Explain

What took place in 1917 that changed the progression of the war?

Who had the upper hand?

Russian Revolutions (1905)-1917

Unrest brewing at home forces Russia to leave the war in 1917…

Causes of Russian Revolutions

• Russia was defeated in war with Japan in 1905• Bloody Sunday 1905• Angry peasants (no land or food)• Incompetent leader- Czar Nicolas II• Military defeats and high casualties in World War I

Russia entered World War I as an absolute monarchy with a great divide between classes. The grievances of workers and peasants were not resolved by the Czar. This led to revolution…

Who were the Bolsheviks?• Means "majority" in Russian• Became the communist party in Russia• Promised to improve working conditions• The Bolsheviks financed their work by party supported

robberies –referred to as “regrettable necessities”. Only individuals or institutions carrying state funds were targeted.

• Leader of Bolsheviks = V.I. Lenin.

“We cannot be guided by the mood of the masses; that is changeable and unaccountable. The masses have

given their confidence to the Bolsheviks and ask from them not words but deeds.” (Lenin)

V.I. Lenin• Sent into exile during 1st

Russian Revolution• Brought back to Russia by the

German government• Led “Reds” in the civil war

against the “Whites”• 1918 Russian Empire collapsed • Lenin = 1st premier of the new

Soviet Union in 1922

What happened to the royal family?

The last Czar of Russia, Czar Nicholas II.

2007: DNA of bone fragments prove all members of family were killed (contrary to what Disney says-sorry!)

How does this relate to our study this year?

1. Change from absolute leadership2. Revolution-people demanding

individual rights3. Communist government

• Major power in WW2 & Cold War
