THE TRIUMPH OF TIMECD 25394Featuring the music of Peter Graham, this album, in many respects, is a retrospective, released in the year that he decided to leave academia and dedicate himself to full-time compostion. The album celebrates but one aspect of Peter Graham’s compositional life; test pieces and related works that are of a decidedly descriptive nature. The Essence of Time; A Time for Peace; On Alderley Edge; The Holy Well; Voyage to Worlds Unknown; The Triumph of Time.

SINFONIETTARob WiffinRS00041Sinfonietta is a challenging, extended work for symphonic wind band in three movements. The first two, Dance with the Devil and A Glimpse of Paradise are a transition from dark to light; Dance with the Devil is aggressive and occasionally macabre whereas A Glimpse of Paradise is serene. The final movement, Reyes Magos, is the joyous fiesta of the Three Kings. Sinfonietta is technically and expressively demanding but is written within the realms of tonal language.

TOCCATAWilfred Heaton trans. Alastair WheelerRS00043Based on the spiritual ‘O dem golden slippers’, this work was originally written as a brass sextet although a brass band version was published in 1973. Now, with this further amplification to wind band, it is hoped that the work will be enjoyed by an even greater audience and many more performers.

HAMMONDKenneth Downie trans. Kevin Horner RS00046Hammond is a setting of the song ‘In the love of Jesus’ with words by Ivy Mawby and music by William Hammond. The beautiful sequential curves of the melodic line are exploited in this arrangement to produce a full and rich texture that will sound immensely satisfying once balanced and refined.

THE OLD RUGGED CROSS (Euphonium Solo)George Bennard arr. Rodney Newton SPS29605

This popular hymn tune is arranged for euphonium solo with brass band accompaniment. A reflective arrangement that should be part of every euphonium player’s repertoire.

THE WONDROUS CROSSDean Jones

SPS29924

The Wondrous Cross was written as the result of a request from Tim Parker, Bandmaster of the Staines Band of The Salvation Army for something new and inspiring for Easter and based on the tunes of

‘Rockingham’ and ‘O Waley, Waley’. The composer has fused the old and the new tunes firstly with a chorale setting and then in a ‘bolero’

style. This has created a moving work that will engage the listener with the heart of the Easter story.

BEFORE THE CROSS (Cornet Solo) Edward Gregson SPS29917

Written at the request of David Daws for his solo album The Sound of David Daws, this meditation for cornet and brass band uses the composer’s own song Before the cross (The Musical Salvationist, April 1965), the first lines of which are “Before the cross I stand in fear and wonder, and see that all my sins on Thee are laid”. The song was written at an early stage of the composer’s career, just before commencing study at The Royal Academy of Music, London. After a brief introduction the melody is heard twice, first played by the soloist, then on euphonium and flugel horn with the soloist adding ornate counterpoint before taking up the melody once again, this time leading to a quiet and reflective conclusion.

Education is one of the best routes out of poverty. Providing the books that kids need for school doesn’t just help them go to school, it also kits them out for the future.

SECOND-HAND BIKE

CODE: 10080EM

We’re teaching kids at our anti-trafficking centre in Malawi how to fix up second-hand bikes. This gives them skills to break their cycle of poverty and exploitation. The fixed-up bikes are then sold in the local market to help us continue to tackle trafficking in the community.

Chickens are a great resource for people living in rural communities. These free-range vending machines can provide the whole family with eggs and give them a much-needed source of protein to add to their diet.

Many people living in poverty don’t have the money to get their great business ideas off the ground. By giving someone a start-up loan they can put these ideas into practice and kick-start their journey out of poverty.

Fishing is a way of life for many people in north-west Kenya, but a lack of decent nets and boats keeps them in poverty. We’re providing equipment and training to help them fish successfully and sustainably.

Moringa trees are called miracle trees because their leaves are packed with vitamins and nutrients. In areas of high malnutrition we’re helping mothers grow their own so they can give their young children the best start in life.
