Brazil claimed their third FIVB Men’s World Grand Champions Cup title in five attempts amongst jubilant scenes in Nagoya’s Nippongaishi Hall after beating hosts Japan in the final match of the week-long tournament. A full house gave Brazil the perfect reception after the world number one finished the tournament unbeaten with five wins from five, with Cuba, four wins and one defeat, and Japan, three wins and two defeats, claiming silver and bronze medals respectively. The FIVB Men’s World Grand Champi-ons Cup 2009 win follows Brazil’s earli-er triumphs in 2005 and 1997 and adds another FIVB tournament to an impres-sive trophy collection, which includes the 2009 World League, 2007 World Cup and the 2006 World Championship titles. Cuba’s silver medal was their

second-best finish in the tournament after a title triumph in 2001 while Japan recorded their best result in the tournament, which features the continental cham-pions and a wild card entry, by claiming their first medal in an FIVB event for 32 years, since taking silver at the 1977 World Cup.Meanwhile, world number five Italy conceded only three sets on their way to the FIVB Women’s World Grand Champions Cup title and completed the 2009 edition unbeaten with a four-set victory over hosts Japan in the final game of the tournament in Fukuoka. The victory for the 2007 World Cup champions in the Marine Messe com-pletes a stellar year for the l’Azzurri after they had already won the Medi-terranean Games and the European Championships, while Olympic cham-pions Brazil finished second and the Dominican Republic recorded their best ever result in an FIVB tournament with a bronze medal in their debut appear-ance in the FIVB Women’s World Grand Champions Cup.

Simone Kuhn and Nadine Zumkehr entered the SWATCH FIVB World Tour records book on November 1 as the first women’s team from Switzerland to win an international “open” Beach Volleyball gold medal after upsetting reigning world champions Jen Kessy and April Ross of the United States in the finals of the US$380,000 Sanya Open presented by Olympic Bay.

Seeded 11th in the second annual Sanya Open, world No 15 Kuhn and Zumkehr scored a 17-21, 22-20 and 15-13 win over the top-seeded and world No. 3 Kessy and Ross in the 60-minute finale before an overflowing crowd on the San-ya Bay centre court. The Swiss shared the $30,000 first-place prize.

“This is unbelievable,” said the 29-year Kuhn, who was named the SWATCH most outstanding player for the Sanya Open.

“No one expected us to win and we had no expectations to win since we were the underdogs. We played very well in a relaxed manner as all the pressure was on the American world champions.”In becoming the first women’s team from Switzerland to compete in a SWATCH FIVB World Tour gold medal match in the 18-year history of the international circuit, Kuhn was competing in her fifth SWATCH “final four” and her first since 2005. Zumkehr’s previous best SWATCH placement was a seventh in 2008 in Mar-seille, France.

Thank-fully, we played our best match of the tournament today against a very good team.”The final was the 10th-time the two teams have met on the SWATCH FIVB World Tour with Wu and Xu still holding a 6-4 edge in the contests.

Jen Kessy and April Ross rebounded from a “disappointing” gold medal set-back in China to capture their second-straight title on Karon Beach Phuket, Thailand on November 8 by claim-ing the top spot on the US$190,000 Phuket Thailand Open powered by PTT podium by defeating American com-patriots Angie Akers and Tyra Turner in the finals.

The top-seeded Kessy and Ross finished their four days of Karon Beach competi-tion with six-straight wins with the final result being a 21-12 and 21-17 victory in 37 minutes over the second-seeded Akers and Turner, who were competing in their first SWATCH FIVB World Tour gold medal match.
