Momentous moment for fiVB Development

It was an immensely proud moment. After more than five years of plan-ning and preparation, the historic

first phase of the multi-million FIVB Tsunami project was complete on July 21, when I had the honour to officially open five new school buildings and outdoor Volleyball courts at five tsu-nami-hit areas in southern Thailand. The reception in Phuket will stay with me the rest of my life. It seems a long time since the events in 2004 but the significance of this moment was not diminished. The gratitude of the local dignitaries and above all the local school children and families was evi-dent in their messages of goodwill. But words need not be spoken. The appre-ciation shown on the many faces was the ultimate reward.I was extremely pleased to be head of the task force as former Asian Volley-ball Confederation President coordinat-ing this project, which was launched thanks to the vision of former FIVB President Dr. Rubén Acosta, and it gives me great heart to know the FIVB is now delivering. We will continue with new schools, Volleyball courts and equip-ment in Sri Lanka, Indonesia and the Maldives. On that note, I must thank FIVB Executive Vice President and Indo-nesia Volleyball Federation Honorary President Ms. Rita Subowo, and FIVB Board of Administration member and Thailand Volleyball Association execu-tive Mr. Shanrit Wongprasert for their sterling work and commitment to the cause. This FIVB aid project is in line with our development policy to share love and sympathy to those who have been given less opportunities in society. There is no better way to rebuild a community than to provide education and sporting facilities in order to generate spirit and team work.

Brazil bag record ninth World league■ World no. 1 Brazil became fiVB World league champions for a record ninth time after they overcame Russia 3-1 (25-22, 25-22, 16-25, 25-23) in the 2010 final in cordoba, argentina on July 25 to claim the $1m first prize.

There were many pretenders to the crown but Brazil defeated them all to surpass Italy as the record World League

winner. After passing through the Inter-continental Round with just one defeat to the Netherlands, the side had enough class to pass through the Final Round in sensational style, undefeated and un-touched, finishing on an amazing un-beaten run of 13 matches.

“It was outstanding,” the returning Bra-zilian Dante said. “Russia was very strong but we put pressure on their serving and we had the power by using their mis-takes.”

“This is a very important title,” Brazil coach Bernardo Rezende said. “We never let Russia use their strongest weapon, serving. We made too many mistakes in the third set but got into the match again in the fourth.”
