World War II involved more than 30 countries and touched almost every part of the globe. For six years, from Hitler’s invasion of Poland to the bombing of Hiroshima and Nagasaki, the world experienced the most devastating war in history. The stories of those who lived it are captured in photographs taken during World War II.

The National Archives holds and preserves millions of photos from World War II. Photographers, documenting on a huge scale, took photos of every activity of the war—training, combat, support services, and much more. These select photographs depict the ways Americans supported the war, from the efforts on the home front to the men and women who served in the military.
