Who are we?

The International Association of Engineering Insurers, (IMIA) is a network of experts in Engineering Insurance from around the world who share experiences, investigate and discuss emerging and critical issues and elaborate papers discussing all kinds of topics of Engineering Insurance.

Our core value is to offer a forum for understanding and promoting best practice in the field of Engineering Insurance.

The industry has to face larger and technologically more complex risks and we all need to understand and appreciate the impact of changes in technology and coverage.

IMIA offers guidance in underwriting and claims handling to all market participants in order to assist them in handling this specialised business professionally. “Worldwide knowledge hub for Engineering Insurance”

Our history

IMIA was founded in 1968 by a group of insurers who specialised in Machinery and Project Insurance, who became aware of how challenging the industrial development has become with new technological risks and more and more complex insurance requirements.

IMIA today

Today IMIA comprises Insurance Associations, Insurers, Reinsurers, Brokers, Consultants and Loss Adjusters from more than 20 nations. To date their working groups produced papers on more than 60 topics on various aspects of Engineering Insurance. IMIA introduced a new series of Short Papers and keeps a good number of interesting external papers and a rich collection of typical loss examples.

At IMIA’s annual conferences, when members present the results of the working groups and discuss specific risks and losses, selected guest presentations provide an added perspective.

IMIA maintains an Internet website at:

www.imia.com

offering assistance by its collection of elaborated IMIA working group papers, presentations, loss examples and a lot of other information on Engineering Insurance.

The final IMIA papers, presentations and other information are made available to the Engineering Insurance world in the Library of the IMIA website.

How IMIA works?

The members are represented at IMIA by their delegates. They are the main contributors to the work of IMIA. This work consists of such activities as sharing experiences and discussing and analysing risks and losses.

Members cooperate in working groups, maintain contact via their communications, develop and share essential knowledge on emerging and critical issues and seek to analyse advances in technology, causes of loss, changes in the maintenance and operation of machinery and other technological innovations.

Each year the delegates meet at their annual conference for presenting and discussing papers produced during the year and various other Engineering insurance issues.

Important results of their work are the papers, presentations and publications created by the working groups or individuals in order to provide support in technical and professional underwriting.

The members also prepare annual figures on premiums and claims development of their country’s Engineering Insurance business.

IMIA members and membership

IMIA is an organisation of national insurance associations and reinsurers from many countries. Individual insurance companies can also become members. Other organisations actively involved in the Engineering Insurance industry - like brokers, consultants and loss adjusters - may become associate members.

IMIA Members delegate experienced professionals who cooperate at IMIA for their mutual benefit by:

• establishing contact with other organisations and experts of the worldwide Engineering Insurance community

• contributing actively in working and discussion groups

• identifying topics of special interest to be discussed by IMIA

• exchanging experience to develop and achieve best practice and knowledge in Engineering Insurance for the benefit of their companies, associations and other market participants.
