Sumitomo Drive Technologies manufactures a wide variety of enclosed gearing designed to drive wastewater treatment equipment such as aerators, comminutors, clarifiers, screens and conveyors. Using our expertise as one of the world’s leading designers of gearing and speed reducers for wastewater processing, we’ve adapted our standard drive parts to suit the harsh conditions of each wastewater industry application. The result is a comprehensive range of Sumitomo Drive Technologies power trans-mission products tailored speci-fically for this industry.
Wastewater treatment facilities must operate 24 hours a day under severe conditions created by the constant flow of highly corrosive wastewater. Minimizing downtime is essential. Whatever your wastewater application, we understand the challenges you face, and we have reliable, durable solutions that deliver the lowest possible life cycle cost and the highest level of performance.

“ Cyclo drives have given us the best performance of any of the gear drives
we’ve ever had in this plant. Not only have we noticed a 40% reduction in amp
draw over previous units, we find that our mixers are distributing wastewater
to all corners of the tank. This tells us that the Cyclo® Drives are using less
energy while supplying more torque than we used previously. Wastewater Treatment Facility

“ Paramax® reducers were initially specified for this application for off-the-shelf
availability of internal parts. Little did we know that spare parts would not be
needed. The Paramax® units run cooler, quieter and more reliable than any
we’ve had in the past.

In most industrial and municipal wastewater treatment systems, the final
“product” produced by the treatment process requires dewatering - physical
separation of the solids fraction for final disposal, and the liquid fraction for
recycling to the beginning of the treatment process or for further treatment
processing.
DigestersAfter the solids are settled out of the clarifiers they are pumped to the digesters. The digesters “digest” the solids - thus removing vector attracting volatiles and making the solids (aka sludge) suitable for land application.

Sludge DewateringFilter presses are found in many different industries and not restricted or limited to the dewatering of biosolids. This application can be found in wastewater treatment facilities to remove the final solids of the treatment process. Other applications in the final stage include screen presses, sludge handling conveyors, and other dewatering systems.

Power Transmission Products for all of yourWastewater Treatment NeedsSumitomo Drive Technologies manufactures a wide variety of enclosed gearing designed to drive wastewater treatmentequipment such as aerators, communitors, clarifiers, screens and conveyors.
With the knowledge and expertise gained as one of the worlds leading designers of gearing and speed reducers for use inprocessing wastewater, Sumitomo Drive Technologies was able to develop a range of industry specific power transmissionproducts using our standard drive parts that are adaptxed to suit the arduous and demanding duty conditions of each application within the wastewater industry.
Solid TransportationIn the headworks process, Sumitomo gear drives help trans-port water and solids throughout the wastewater plant. Some applications that are used are screw pumps, various types of conveyors including drag and screw, etc. Sumitomo gearboxes help transport the materials efficiently, regard-less of the size.

The secondary clarifiers are another set of tanks where the bacteria from the
activated sludge tanks are settled out by gravity. The secondary clarifiers
provide a quiescent condition that promotes settling of the bacterial growth
from the trickling filters and also any solids or scum not removed during
primary sedimentation. The collected sludge and scum is pumped back to the
headworks to repeat the treatment process.
AeratorTo achieve adequate aeration, many biochemical processes use aerator applications to pump air into the bottom of the reactor. This method tends to rely on a gear drive to pump air into the water. In wastewater treatment applications, the reactor media is very viscious due to the heavy sludge of organic matter. Sumitomo’s gearboxes are ideal for these types of applications.

In the headworks process, Sumitomo power transmission products help
transport water and solids throughout this wastewater process. Sumitomo
equipment is used in screw pumps, automatic screen cleaners and drag and
screw conveyors. Regardless of the size, Sumitomo gearboxes help transport
materials efficiently.
Influent PumpingScrew Pumps are an efficient means of lifting large quantities of water or wastewater at low heads. Recognized for efficiency, Sumitomo’s gear drives typically result in lower electricity costs over the lifespan of this type of equipment.

Bar ScreeningAs wastewater enters the plant, it passes through narrow openings, called bar screens or bar racks. They remove objects in the wastewater that are large enough to be caught, and could plug lines or block tank inlets. There are different types of screens that may be used, trash racks, manually cleaned racks, and mechanically cleaned racks.Bar Screen- Cyclo Helical Buddybox (HBB)- Cyclo Bevel Buddybox (BBB)- Helical Shaft Mount (HSM)

The next stages are the removal of the suspended solid matter from the waste
water. The flow passes to large circular or rectangular tanks called primary
settlement tanks, and the waste water is retained allowing the solid particles to
settle to the bottom where they accumulate as sludge. The effluent leaves the
tanks over outlet weirs and then passes on to the secondary treatment stage.
The settled sludge is withdrawn from the tank and passed for further treatment
prior to disposal or recycling.
Primary TreatmentPrimary Treatment
Grit Collector/ClassifierThe primary treatment stage consists of a simple separation between sandy or solid fines and the remaining effluent, which then undergoes secondary treatment. Many grit collector applications utilize Sumitomo gear drives.
Sludge Handling- Cyclo- Paramax- Cyclo Helical Buddybox (HBB)
Primary Settling BasinsGravity is primarily used to allow solids to settle on the bottom of the tank. Up to 70% of solids can be collected. This organic matter or sludge is typically removed by scraping the bottom of the tank without disturbing operation. Some biological action also takes place and breaks down complex solids into more simple compounds. Fat and grease may rise to the surface. This scum is removed without disturbing the settling process. Aerator
