DEACON MINISTRY: A DESCRIPTION A deacon is one called out from the membership of the congregation to special position of leadership: that of a servant. In fact, the Greek word diakonos (from which we get dea-con) is often translated in the New Testament as “servant.” In Matthew, Jesus says, “whoever wishes to be great among you must be your diakonos -- your servant” (20:26). While the word, diakonos, appears many times throughout scripture, two passages seem particularly focused on the selection and ordination of deacons for the sake of the church body: Acts 6:1-6: Displays an initial selection of servant leaders from the church body for the purpose of providing care for its members and equipping the fold to share the Gospel with others. 1 Timothy 3:8-13: Calls for the church body to ordain people of deep integrity and humili-ty, who recognize and “hold fast to the mystery of the faith with a clear conscience” (3:9). In line with the scriptural understanding, twenty-first century deacons are chosen and affirmed by their congregation to be servant of the church, who lead not only with words, but also with hands, eyes, ears, and feet. They, in turn, equip and encourage us to follow Christ as he leads us out into the world. Pray for these servant leaders as we ordain them by recognizing their special gifts for deacon ministry. THE LAYING ON OF HANDS The laying on of hands is an ancient practice of the Christian community, which stems back to Acts 6 when the seven chosen to serve stood before the apostles, “who prayed and laid their hands on them” (6:6). This practice serves as an opportunity for the con-gregation to affirm the ordinand and offer a prayer of blessing over their service. All are welcome to participate in this special ritual.

SPECIAL CALLED RICHMOND BAPTIST ASSOCIATION MEETING, MARCH 19, 2013, HUGUENOT BAPTIST CHURCH An Ad Hoc Committee of the RBA will make a recommendation for a vote to the full Association regarding the maintaining of ties with Ginter Park Baptist Church. Our church will be sending 7 messengers (approved by the deacons), and additional members who are RBA staff persons, to this important meeting.

ALL-STATE CHOIR: A ROUSING SUCCESS Last weekend Way Snah Htoo and Monica Iang joined over 200 children and youth at Virginia Baptist All-State Choir at First Baptist Richmond. The girls worked hard and the concert was amazing. A video will be available soon if you would like to see the concert.

*CHILDREN AND YOUTH DEVELOPMENT: Today, any school-age child is invited to assist the Deacons as they collect offering. During the last verse of the offertory hymn, noted with an asterisk (*), children are invited to make their way to the front pew to stand in front of a Deacon during the last stanza of the invitation hymn. This Deacon will then guide the child step by step through the pro-cess of collecting the morning’s offering. When the choral doxology has ended, children and Deacons alike return to their seats with family members.

WORSHIP EXPLORERS (Children Grades K-3) All children, Grades K-3, may now leave the Sanctuary with Megan Strollo. Today, the children will participate in an activity centered on the scripture reading.

WORSHIP NOTES: During the season of Lent, we are focusing our attention on the Stations of the Cross depicted in the paintings hanging around the Sanctuary, painted by local artist Grieg Leach in 2010. The featured painting each week (on the front of the bulletin and spot-lighted during the reading) is centered on our passage for the morning. Our children are leading us each week by singing a song titled, “Nets of Love” and by creating our own “net of love” on the loom at the front of the Sanctuary. The colors the children are weav-ing into the loom correspond with the vibrant colors in the paintings and serve to remind us that the cross is one way in which God has cast a net of love on our behalf. If your children would like to participate in weaving the loom, they are welcome! Simply have them ask Dan Schumacher to be a part of it.
