Timely Information from the Counselors on wkhscounselors.com

Incoming seniors: We encourage incoming seniors to continue their college search and application process this summer by completing college visits, beginning online applications, and considering teachers to ask to write recommen-dation letters. Check out the section on college applications under the College and Career Link for more details!

All students: Credit flexibility allows students the opportunity to earn high school credit through a variety of non-traditional means. Independent studies, online classes, and demonstrating proficiency in a subject area are all possibili-ties. Students must go through an application process in order to gain approval for the credit flexibility option. Details can be found under the Academic Link>Academic Options.

There is still time to register for a variety of summer opportunities. Details can be found under the Summer Opportuni-ties Link.

Transcripts are now available for viewing through Infinite Campus! Log on to the Portal and go to Infinite Campus. Under Reports, click on “Transcript Info.” Any questions about transcripts should be directed to the student’s counselor.

Schedule Change Policy for 2015-16

During the summer we will be working to solve schedule conflicts for the 2015-16 school year, a process we must complete manually, one at a time. Students submitted their course choices to the Counseling Center in Febru-ary, including their alternate selections. Students will be contacted when a combination of the classes they selected cannot be made without conflict. If a schedule change can be made without conflict from the student’s own course selections, the student will not be called for consultation.

Please Note: Any students who decide they no longer wish to take an advanced course for the 2015-16 school year have until June 15, 2015 to notify their school counselor of their level change request through school email. After June 15th, the students are responsible for their summer assignments and the grades for their summer work will carry with them to their new class should students request a change beyond the deadline.

Class sizes will be at or very near capacity. With the loss of class sections, we do not have the same flexibility to change schedules that we might have had in the past. To request a schedule change, students must pick up a Schedule Change request form in the Counseling Center, obtain the required signatures, and turn it back in to their counselor. Thank you for understanding.

Seniors: Final TranscriptsFinal transcripts will automatically be sent to the school you provided to the Counseling Center on your Manda-tory Graduation Form before graduation. If your school changes or you are unsure of your selection, please contact Mrs. McDaniel at [email protected] or by phone. She can be reached by calling 450-6482. She will be available during the summer months.

Let’s Get Organized! All students benefit from practicing good organizational skills. Transitioning to high school is demanding, and strong organization supports the transition. Below is a suggested supply list based on the Homework, Organization, and Plan-ning Skills (HOPS) interventions created by Dr. Joshua Langberg and his associates for working with students with ADHD and Executive Function Disorders. Help your child get a good start for a successful year by providing the tools to stay organized.

Organizational Supply List *• One 3” D-ring binder• 6 plastic dividers with pockets, 3-hole punched• 1 folder with inside pockets, 3-hole punched• 1 pencil and pen pouch, 3-hole punched• 1 box pens• 1 box pencils• 1 packet loose leaf paper• Optional: a 3-hole punch for home• Planner/Calendar: Back by popular demand, the WKHS Student Planbook for 2015-16 will be available for $5 during

schedule pick-up and the first weeks of school. These planners feature daily calendars and include lists of holidays, and bell schedules.

*This is a suggested supply list to help with getting organized. Teachers may request other supplies for specific classes.

Encourage your student to visit the Teaching & Learning Center in Room 209. To help students continue their success, tutors are available daily throughout the school year to help not only with academics but also with organization.

Summer Student Organizing Tip: Help your child recognize the importance of keeping a calendar (plan book). Have them record and keep track of their own summer activities.

MyPaymentsPlus for Next Year

With MyPaymentsPlus.com parents can make payments toward their student’s meals, sign up for e-mail low balance reminders, and view your student’s cafeteria purchases. Allow up to 48 hours for payment to appear in a student’s meal account.

Beginning August 1st, visit www.MyPaymentsPlus.com. Click “Register a free account” and follow the onscreen instructions. Add your student by using their nine digit student ID number.

Please try to keep your student’s meal account funded. At the high schools, there is no “charg-ing” for meals or snacks if the account has been depleted.

Senior Picture Time! Seniors! Summer is the time to have your senior pictures taken. The wallet-sized color picture can be given to Mrs. Mullen, yearbook advisor, by the end of February 2016. We encourage you to consider using Lance Parker, 766-7222, to set up your appointment. During the school year, Mr. Parker donates his professional services to WKHS, as well as hundreds of dollars of goods.

Contact Mrs. Mullen via email if you know your senior will have a photo, but he/she will not have it by February, so we can reserve a space: [email protected]

FOR SENIORS NOT HAVING PHOTOS TAKEN BY A STUDIO -- Yearbook photographers will be happy to take your picture so that you can be included in the senior portrait section.

2015 Yearbook UpdateIt’s been a great year at WKHS, and the yearbook staff has been busy preserving the memories for us. Our esti-mated arrival date for this year’s book (2015) is the be-ginning of September. Current students will be notified via email and school announcements. Graduated seniors will be notified via the email currently on file.

ATTENTION! Please take the following information into consideration as you shop for school clothes.

Worthington Kilbourne High SchoolStudent Appearance and Expression2015-16 Administrative Guidelines

The Worthington Board of Education recognizes the rights of a student with regard to expression and to regulate his or her appearance, within the bounds and standards of common decency and modesty. Therefore regulations covering student dress and expression including, but not limited to, hair, clothing, buttons, badges, physical gestures, written materials, and other symbols and expressions shall be aimed at minimizing and/or preventing those situations that negatively impact the learning environment. Exceptions to the following policy may be made on a case-by-case basis, for religious, medical or other reasons, at the request of a student or parent/guardian on behalf of the student.

o Students are not to wear clothing that represents or implies alcohol, tobacco and other drugs; gang-related, inappro-priate/vulgar language or design.

o Students are not permitted to wear or carry hats, caps, sweatbands, bandanas, head coverings, masks, make-up that covers features of the face or disguises the identity, or dark tinted/sunglasses inside the school building between the time the student arrives until 3:05 pm, nor at any educational assembly or program.

o Students are to dress so that undergarments are not exposed (i.e., sagging pants, transparent clothing, etc.)

o Students are not to wear clothing that exposes bare midriffs, bare shoulders, bare backs. Students can wear sleeveless tops, but undergarments and excessive skin will be covered. No article of clothing shall be worn that distracts from the educational process.

o Shorts and skirt lengths must be long enough to touch the hem with your fingertips with hands hanging straight to the side when standing.

After careful review and discussion, the WKHS Leadership believes that these guidelines are essential to promoting and sustaining a safe emotional and physical school environment. As partners in our learning community we ask for your support of these guidelines.

A Message from the Health Office

If your student needs to have medication available in the Health Office for the 2015-2016 school year please contact Nurse Julie. Prescription medications must have a “Medication Authorization Form” completed by both the parent/guardian and physician on file in the Health Office prior to prescription medication being ad-ministered during school hours.

A “High School Self-Carry Nonprescription Medication Form”, completed by only the parent/guardian, is need-ed for WKHS students to carry over-the-counter medi-cation with them during school hours. These forms are available on the District website. Once on the District website go to Departments to access Health Services; there is a complete list of options on the left side of the Health Services welcome page which includes health forms. If you need any assistance with these forms or have questions regarding medication or other health-related issues, Nurse Julie can be reached by email this summer. Thank you!Julie A. PTO Wrap-up

WKHS PTO sincerely thanks all of our members and vol-unteers for their support of our activities throughout the year. We would like to offer a special shout-out to all of our Hospitality Committee members: whenever we asked for food or supplies for an event, you stepped up without hesitation, and we could never have managed without you. Thanks so much!

Thanks also to all the senior families who purchased graduation yard banners and photos. Proceeds benefit the PTO Scholarship Fund, so we truly appreciate your support!

We hope that all families and staff will consider PTO membership next year. Membership dues are a vital part of our annual budget, and 100% of your dues supports the activities of our local organization. We also have a few open committee positions which do not require a large time commitment.

PTO Officers for the 2015-16 school year are: President: Erin Rabinowitz; Past President: Laurie Wirt; Co-Vice Presidents: Tracy Jones and Dina Biglin; Treasurer: Burl Scott; Secretary: Patsy Glasgow.

Parent Score Reports

PARCC has released Mock Up Score Reports to allow

parents to get an idea of what kind of information they

will receive back. Below are links for both Reading

and Math.

English Language Arts Parent Report

Math Parent Report

Understanding the Score Report

The reports use graphics, colors and detailed

descriptions to show how your child performed on

the English language Arts and Mathematics portions of

the test. The reports will show how well your child is

meeting the knowledge and skills expected of students

at their grade level, and how their performance

compares to peers in the school, district, state and

consortium.

The reports also contain helpful links for parents to

access more information. The report is intended to

help you work with your child's teachers and school

officials on how best to support your student’s needs.

Ohio will likely make some modifications to

personalize the Score report to our state.

Parent Guide To the Score Report

When Will I Receive the Reports? During the first year of PARCC administration (2014-

2015 school year), you will receive the score report for

your child in the fall. This first year, student

performance levels for this new assessment will be set

based on the performance of all students. This is the

standard method for determining those levels.

In following years, the goal is to deliver score reports

as close to the end of the school year as possible.

Parent Guide to Student Success

As you work with your child to prepare for the coming

year look at these resources on the Ohio Department

of Education Webpage. PARENT GUIDE TO STUDENT

SUCCESS and access your child’s grade level.

Student Assessment Inventory

Worthington Schools is participating with Westerville,

Olentangy and Buckeye Valley in conducting an audit of

local tests/assessments. The steps of the audit include:

1. Compiling information about each assessment; its

intended purpose, use, and effectiveness;

2. Gathering input from teachers, parents, and

students regarding their view of the usefulness of

each assessment;

3. Reviewing the audit information with groups of

parents, teachers and students;

4. Developing a set of recommendations to decrease

the amount of testing and/or increase the

effectiveness in the use of the assessments.

We anticipate that we will have some preliminary

recommendations by August 1, 2015, however, many of the

action steps may take us the coming year to complete.

As we are unsure of what our state assessments (ELA, Math, Science and Social Studies) will look like in the future we have not included those on the survey.

IMPORTANT DATES

Ohio Graduation Test – Reports will be sent home by the

High Schools the first week in June. Students who need to

retest will be contacted by their school this week and next.

They must participate in OGT Bootcamp the first week of

June. OGT Summer Test is June 15-19.

Grade 3 Reading OAA - Reports will be sent home the first

week in July by the district office. Students who still need

to pass the Grade 3 OAA will take the summer retest on

July 6

We are interested in your feedback

regarding your knowledge of and use of

local assessments currently used. To

provide feedback please complete the

Student Assessment Inventory by

clicking on the highlighted hyperlink

TAKING THE TEMPERATURE ON

STUDENT ASSESSMENT. This survey

will close on June 5, 2015.
