A Word from Our PastorI met Shane Claiborne when he was speaking at a friend’s church in Pennsylvania. Shane is the founder of The Simple Way Christian Community in Philadelphia and a leader in what is called “The New Monasticism”. To read more about him go to www.thesimpleway.org. He is also the author of some very provocative Christian books including The Irresistible Revolution: Living as an Ordinary Radical. For summer I wanted to share a prayer from his prayer book:

Blessing of a GardenGod of the Universe, you made the heavens and the earth, so we do not call our home merely “planet earth.”We call it your creation, a divine mystery,a gift from your most blessed hand. The world itself is your miracle.Bread and vegetables from the earth are thus also from heaven.Help us to see in our daily bread your presence.

Upon this garden may your stars rain down their blessed dust.May you send rain and sunshine upon our garden and us.Grant us the humility to touch the humus, that we might become more human, that we might mend our rift from your creation, that we might then know the sacredness of the gift of life, that we might truly experience life from your hand. For you planted humanity in a gardenand began our resurrection in a garden. Our blessed memory and hope lie in a garden.

Thanks be to God,who made the world teeming with variety,of things on the earth, above the earth, and under the earth. Thanks be to God,for the many kinds of plants, trees, and fruits that we celebrate. For the centipedes, ants and worms, for the mice, marmots and bats, for the cucumbers, tomatoes, and peppers,we rejoice that we find ourselves eclipsed by the magnitudeof generosity and mystery. Thanks be to God.”

Have you considered…… the legacy of faith you will leave? Your will and other estate planning documents provide an ideal opportunity to make a statement of your faith by giving resources to support WPC for years to come.

Charitable bequests, for example, can be written into your will. The bequest can be a stated amount, a percentage of your estate or a residual amount after other expenses have been deducted. Please contact the church office to be put in touch with a member of the Endowment Committee.

Our New Bus has Arrived! The new bus arrived on Thursday, July 23. Three drivers have been trained to drive: Bill Riffer, Andy Morgan and Ed Brock. The bus left on its first trip on Saturday, July 25, headed to Montreat Conference Center in North Carolina carrying Andy Morgan, Director of Christian Education and members of the WPC Senior High PYF.

Just who ARE Sarah, Anna, Elizabeth, Deborah, and Martha?Along with Miriam, Eunice, Dorcas and Phoebe, these are the names of our wonderful Presbyterian Women’s Circles! If you are already a member of a Circle, that’s great! If you’ve been thinking about it, but haven’t made the commitment yet, let this be your year! Circle meetings will start in September, and run through May. ALL women of the church are invited to join a Circle.

But what, exactly, IS a Circle? A Circle is where...• ...faith is nurtured and growth takes place through

worship, study, friendship and outreach.• ...women are challenged to stretch beyond their limits.• ...women move beyond the safe places of life and reach

out to others.• ...Christian leadership is born, nurtured and sent forth into ministry.

Most WPC Circles meet monthly, although others may meet more or less frequently. All of our Circles meet on different days and weeks of the month, so that every woman of the church should be able to find a Circle that meets their needs. Watch your bulletin and the Kirk for dates and times.

Basic to circle life is the yearly Horizons Bible study. Almost all of our Circles follow this study for the year, as this is the study that is used by ALL Presbyterian Women around the world. Some prefer to form their own study.

This year’s Horizons Bible Study will be Come to the Waters, by Judy Record Fletcher. The nine lessons will be based on the premise that just as water nourishes our bodies, so the scriptures on water nourish our souls. In this study, we consider the waters of chaos in Genesis, and the River of Life in the last chapter of Revelation, where chaos is no more. Water plays a central role in the stories of creation, the delivery of God’s people (through the parting of the Red Sea and the crossing of the Jordan River), judgment of a people weak in faith, and the adoption of the people of God through baptism. Sometimes there is too much water (think Noah) and sometimesthere is too little water (think drought in the desert). Together, we will explore some of the Bible’s 800 references to water. Each of the study’s nine lessons includes one or more Bible passages and a primary theological theme or issue. The titles and themes are: 1. Birthing Waters—Creation; 2. Life–giving Water—Baptism; 3. Absence of Water—irst and Longing; 4. Dangerous Waters—God’s Deliverance; 5. Stormy Water—Faith;

6. Waters of Justice and Righteousness—Justice; 7. Streams of Mercy—Forgiveness; 8. e Hospitality of Living Water—Compassion; 9. River of Life—Hope.

If you’d like more information on Presbyterian Women, or on joining a Circle, please contact Jean Scott, PW Coordinating Team Moderator ([email protected]).

Greetings from Vacation Bible School (VBS) and G:Force: God’s Love in Action! We planted seeds of God’s love during the week of June 22 for 150 children and over 100 volunteers who sang in the Music Zone, created crafts in the Crafts Zone, got their wiggles out in the Recreation Zone, and much more! Our wonderful children had the opportunity to Move, Act, Care, Follow and Share.

About 50 wonderful WPC adult and youth volunteers, including many active and formerly active Deacons and Elders, gave an hour, a day, and most the entire week to serving the youngest members of our congregation and our covenant congregation from St. Bede. Much of our staff was involved, as well. Rebecca Elton led the Music Zone (always a highlight of everyone’s week), and our DEM Andy Morgan transformed himself into Coach Cool, who worked closely with Checkers the Cheetah puppet during the week.

Our VBS mission project for the week, the Heritage Humane Society, was the receipient of over 300 items donated by our VBS kids and their families. The Christian Education Ministry would like to thank ALL of the volunteers who were involved in the successful adventure that started as we Moved on Monday, and grew bigger and bigger each day, as the kids took the love of Jesus out of the church, and shared with their neighborhoods and communities. The Christian Education Ministry hopes you will consider volunteering your time next year. Planning begins in January 2016. Mark your calendar now for next year. VBS 2016 will tentatively take place during the week of June 27- July 1. Hope to see you there. Check your bulletin, the Kirk Courier, and the WPC Facebook Page for VBS 2016 updates.

A Fierce Flourishing is coming to WPC beginning in September! What is a Fierce Flourishing, you ask? This is the 2015-2016 MOPS theme, and we get to experience it, right here at WPC! As we read in Isaiah 55:12: For you shall go out in joy and be led forth in peace; the mountains and the hills before you shall break forth into singing, and all the trees of the field shall clap their hands. This is what we hope all of our MOPS moms will experience this year! Throughout the year, activities and speakers will be planned that will assist moms, so that in their lives, they will Celebrate Lavishly, Embrace Rest, and Notice Goodness.

The WPC Mothers of Preschoolers (MOPS) groups will meet once a month. The evening group will meet on the 3rd Wednesday of the month, from 5:30 to 7:30pm (beginning on September 16). The morning group will meet the Thursday morning following the Wednesday night meeting (sometimes the 3rd Wednesday, sometimes the 4th, depending on the calendar), from 9:30 to 11:30am (beginning on September 17). MOPS moms will register for either the evening or the morning group.

MOPS programs also include a MOPPETS program, in which the children of the MOPS moms are cared for in a warm, safe, fun-filled environment. They’ll also be engaged in an age-appropriate curriculum in which they’ll discover how much God loves them.

We are also looking for Mentor Moms! A mentor mom is a “seasoned” mom, with older children (and possibly grandchildren!) who would be willing to join either our morning or evening group. You are there to provide support, connect with our MOPS moms, represent WPC, and possibly to lead a devotion or two. MOPS International provides many resources to help you on your journey as a Mentor Mom.

Planning and Registration for the fall semester is underway! Many hands will be needed to kick of our MOPS group at WPC. If you are interested in participating, we’d love to have you!

Contact Andy Morgan ([email protected]) or Jodie Davis ([email protected]) to help us get started! Or look for the MOPS brochures in the Welcome Center.

This year’s Horizons Bible Study will be Come to the Waters, by Judy Record Fletcher. The nine lessons will be based on the premise that just as water nourishes our bodies, so the scriptures on water nourish our souls. In this study, we consider the waters of chaos in Genesis, and the River of Life in the last chapter of Revelation, where chaos is no more. Water plays a central role in the stories of creation, the delivery of God’s people (through the parting of the Red Sea and the crossing of the Jordan River), judgment of a people weak in faith, and the adoption of the people of God through baptism. Sometimes there is too much water (think Noah) and sometimesthere is too little water (think drought in the desert). Together, we will explore some of the Bible’s 800 references to water. Each of the study’s nine lessons includes one or more Bible passages and a primary theological theme or issue. The titles and themes are: 1. Birthing Waters—Creation; 2. Life–giving Water—Baptism; 3. Absence of Water—irst and Longing; 4. Dangerous Waters—God’s Deliverance; 5. Stormy Water—Faith;

(Common Prayer: A Liturgy for Ordinary Radicals, Zondervan 2010, p. 561)~Peace, John
