December 2017

President’s Take Aim Message

As the year’s shooting events closes for another

year, it’s that time of the year to think about family,

friends and the spirit of the holiday season. It’s also

time reflect back on all the good things your

Association has accomplished in 2107 and to look to

the New Year to begin to make plans for the coming

year’s shooting events.

Let me take a moment to share some of the

highlights from the recent Board of Directors’ meeting

held December 16, 2017.

NRA Club membership has been renewed for

another year to keep us in good standing with the

NRA.

The Directors have decided that the Association’s

current liability insurance should be increased to

$1,000,000.00 since the present coverage of

$100,000.00 may not be adequate in the event of

an unfortunate and catastrophic accident.

President, Jim Canon, will be contacting a local

insurance agent to make arrangements for a new

policy when the current policy expires in

February, 2018.

The Association has gladly donated $100.00 to the

Buckhannon-Upshur 4-H Youth Air Rifle

Shooting Club, which currently hosts a

membership from 4th grade through high school.

Vice-President, Chris Dunlap, is currently

researching the possibility of a new shooting

range in Kanawha County for the Association to

be able to offer a range in the middle part of the

state. He will report his findings back to the Board

of Directors at the 1st Board Meeting in March,

2018.

Officer positions up for election are myself as

President and Secretary, Linda Gruver, since we both

will be stepping down to give someone else the

opportunity to serve the Association at the highest

level. It is with mixed emotions that I must step down

as President, but unfortunately, due to complications

from major surgery, I believe the position can better

be served by someone else. Both positions need to be

filled, either from within the current Officers or

Directors, or by someone in good standing from the

general membership.

Arrangements have been finalized for our display

table at the annual Charleston Hunt Show slated for

January 26, 27, 28, 2018 at the Charleston Civic

Center. If you are interested in helping out at the

display table, if only to help out for lunch or relief

breaks, please contact co-chairs Gary Bailey (304)

586-3116 or Chris Dunlap (304) 756-2856.

The Association’s annual meeting is scheduled for

March 10, 2018, so start making plans to save that day

to attend this very important meeting. The meeting

will be held at Village Square Event Center, 1489

Milford St., Clarksburg, WV. The menu is not yet

Blennerhassett Chapter of THE FRIENDS OF NRA Hosts Most Successful Banquet

The Blennerhassett Chapter of the Friends of

NRA is very pleased to report our most successful

banquet in chapter history for 2017. Our banquet was

once again held at the very fine facilities at Grande

Point Conference Center in Vienna, WV. We are

limited in our attendance and cannot comfortably

accommodate more than 300 people. This is the third

year in a row that we are right at this sellout level and

we expect this to be the case in the coming years. For

2018, we have moved our banquet from a Friday night

to a Saturday night, Oct. 20 to see if this will help

more of those who would like to attend.

This was the ninth banquet in our Chapter history

and we look forward to our 10th anniversary in 2018.

We were very fortunate in getting some new chapter

volunteers this year and they proved to be a great help

and contributed greatly to our success. Several area

shooting groups benefitted from funds generated from

banquet revenues including kids, women and the Boy

Scouts. The chapter has just started the pre-banquet

raffle for 2018 that is a Winner’s Choice of either a

S&W 9mm Shield package, a Taurus Judge, or a

Savage 22-250 rifle. More information is available on

our Facebook page: Blennerhassett Friends of NRA.

We again would like to thank all of our corporate

sponsors, local business supporters and attendees for

their role in helping us realize our most successful

year.

2018 Friends of NRA Banquet Schedule

The Friends of NRA support the NRA

Foundation. The NRA Foundation is the country's

leading charitable organization in support of the

shooting sports, having awarded thousands of grants

in support of educational programs since its inception

in 1990. Since its establishment in October 1992

Friends of NRA events provide participants an

opportunity to support the charitable goals of The

NRA Foundation and enjoy the camaraderie of other

law-abiding gun owners.

These are the Banquets that are currently scheduled.

Keep watch at http://www.friendsofnra.org/ for

updates and added banquets.

2017 Ed Williams Memorial West Virginia

State Precision Pistol Championships

Brassmasters sponsored the 2017 Ed Williams

Memorial West Virginia State Precision Pistol

Championships at their pistol range located at the

White Horse Firearms and Outdoor Education Center

at Peeltree, Saturday and Sunday, September 23rd

&

24th.

This annual state championship began some 40+

years ago by the Summersville Wadcutters Club

however; six years ago it was moved to the White

Horse Center when the Wadcutters lost their range.

Three years ago Brassmasters petitioned the West

State Rifle and Pistol Association, the sanctioning

body for state shooting championships, seeking formal

approval to name this annual state championship in

honor of life-long WV shooting-sports advocate and

nationally renowned multiple championship winning

pistol shooter, Ed Williams. In perpetuity, it will be

known as the Ed Williams Memorial WV State Pistol

Championships.

38 Competitors from the states of Maryland,

Michigan, North Carolina, New York, Ohio,

Pennsylvania, Virginia, Wisconsin and West Virginia,

competed over the two-day event for awards, prizes

and bragging rights.

Near-perfect weather conditions during the two-

day event produced championship-type scores that

saw two hat tricks, with 2016 State Champion Mark

Bentley of Barboursville, WV successfully defending

last year’s State Champion title and Steve Gibbons of

Lewistown, Pennsylvania repeating his 2016 Open

Winner title.

Saturday’s competition culminated in a catered

dinner for all competitors and guests and Sunday’s

final round was accented by an awards ceremony,

with Delores Williams, widow of the championship’s

namesake presenting awards to the wining

competitors.

Winning scores are based on actual scores vs. a

potential score of 2700 points in each class, however;

the state champion must be a state resident. Winners

were as follow:

On September 1-4, the IBS held its 2017 1000-

yard Benchrest Nationals at White Horse in Peeltree,

West Virginia. There was a great turn-out this year,

with 118 entries in Light Gun Class (17-lb limit, 5

shots per target) class and 107 shooters in Heavy Gun

Class (Unlimited weight, 10 shots per target). The

conditions this year were challenging to say the least,

with rain storms, spiraling winds, and fog. In fact, rain

and fog on Saturday (with cancelled relays) caused the

Nationals to be extended by one day through Monday,

September 4th. What’s more, of the 107 shooters

listed in the Two-Gun Overall results who actually

shot both guns, there were dozens of DQs. (Yes, the

wind was a bit tricky at this year’s Nationals.)

LITTLE KANAWHA RIFLE CLUB WRAPS UP 2017

SEASON

October saw the close of the 2017 Groundhog

matches at the Little Kanawha Rifle Club near

more shooters than ever, most of them in the Custom

Class. Class winners were as follows: Dylan Penn

won the Junior Class shooting a 6.5 Creedmore with

an average 77.5 points. George Duckworth took the

Hunter Class also with a 6.5 Creedmore and Tina

Kocher walked away with the top average score of

followed closely by Richard Murray shooting a 308.

Jan Williams, another top female shooter, won the

Factory Custom Class, also with a 308 and an average

score of 121.3.

The Custom Class was the most popular with just

over 100 shooters competing during the year. The top

four finishers were: Rodney Pugh with an average

score of 138.1 points, Cash Stone with an average of

137, Travis Shreve came in third with an average of

135.3 followed by Bob Casto with and average of

133.1. Full match results can be found on the club’s

web site: lkrc.org. The last match of the season is a

benefit match for the local Friends of NRA banquet.

This year the club raised $450 and was able to sponsor

a Weatherby Vanguard rifle.
