News from the Villages

BATCOMBE.....Local representative: Alan Bastone (01300) [email protected]

Christmas was a joyous occasiondespite the ice and snow.  St Mary’sChurch was filled  with grown ups andchildren. The service was led by Rev SimonBrignall and it was nice to hear the voicesof children on such a happy day.Afterwards we all enjoyed hot punch, mince pies and sweets for the children. Our thanks go to all the ladies whodecorated the church and provided theeats and sweets.

Christmas day service again saw thechurch filled, with Brother Damian, fromthe Friary, taking the service; our thanks tothe Griffin brothers Jason and Michael formaking a good job of salting the churchpath and steps and to John who managed

to pull a few strings to get the council topart with some salt for the roads.

Congratulations to Sarah Lindley andAndy Elford who got engaged on NewYear’s Eve and will marry in Batcombe inJuly

Alan Bastone

The first snow fell gently on Chetnole on26 November – much more was to follow!Let us spare a thought for all those, especially Jacky Sibun, who fell victim to thepost-snow icy conditions in the run-up toChristmas. Quite a few slipped and fell onun-gritted, ice-covered lanes and wereinjured.

A few strategically placed grit bunkers, preferably before the arrival of the nextperiod of sub-zero bad weather, wouldcome in handy. A pat on the back for thosevolunteers who braved the elements to tow

stranded cars out of trouble and also wentto the aid of those without transport..

Did you know that Chetnole &Stockwood parish has a new register of 4wheel drive vehicle owners who are willingto help others during bad weather? This isthe brainchild of Jo Meier of Stockwood Milland Sue Morgan (yes, “Sue of the weeklyE-Diary”) has kindly volunteered to be themain contact for people in distress and tokeep the register up to date. So - hands up,all you 4X4 & tractor drivers! (tel: 873104)(cont’d overleaf)

Belated congratulations to Jessica &Christopher Grant-Peterkin, on the birth oftheir daughter Rose on 1st November.

Our sympathy and condolences tohusband Reg and sons Julian and Adrian forthe loss of Dulce Triggs of Hamlet Farm, whose funeral was held at St.Peter’s Churchon 13 January. Dulce was well known toolder residents of the village, as a long-standing member of the Garden Club andas a talented sculptress. Reg and Dulcelived at Hamlet for over 50 years and shewill be sadly missed.

Comings and Goings:Jill Holder has moved from Braemar,

Hamlet. We wish her happiness in her newhome in Yetminster.

A warm welcome to Rex and GwenHoughton, parents of Lynn Darley, to theirnew home at Bent Tree House and wishthem both a happy life in Chetnole withStan and Lynn and their affable one-eyeddog, Tess.

Village Hall - not only a new telephoneline, but also a computer with Broadbandconnection have been installed in thevillage hall forresidents’ use e.g.shopping on line, booking holidays etc.

A weeklyOutreach Post Officeservice commencedon 12 January andWednesday “drop infor a cup of coffee”mornings are alsoP.O. mornings fromnow on. Anothersuccessful project for the VH Committee!

More Good News – the excellentfortnightly mobile library service has so farsurvived “the cuts” – so use it or lose it!

It all happens in Chetnole, onWednesday mornings.

Alan Bashford reported that “Somehooligan has burst the Basket Ball at theplaying field! The good news is I know whodid it. Whilst my brother was visiting ourmother he decided to take her and his dogto the playing field for some exercise.Unfortunately the ball got puncturedduring the session, but it wasn’t the dogthat did it. Yes, our mother was the culprit.Even though she is 82 this year shemanaged to do the damage!! We havedonated a new ball and it is ready andwaiting to be played with”. What strengththe lady has! The moral of this story maywell be “Don’t mess with Senior Citizens”.

A few village hall related items missedthe deadline for the last issue – the annual

“Greasy Spoon Café” event on 31st Octoberwas again a great success and raised £650for Save The Children. Well done, Bee andAnna and their team of helpers – that’s a lotof bacon, sausage and egg baps!

The annual Village Curry Lunch wasanother successful culinary fundraiser,

putting over £700into the coffers.Well done thecurry makers,organisers andwasher-uppers!Graffiti

Farewell to the TaborsTowards the end of last year Sue and Bu

Tabor decided that The Court was no longera practical home for them and beforeChristmas moved to more convenientaccommodation in Oxfordshire, closer totheir families. This ended an associationwith the village and its affairs of over fortyyears.

Bu (the name used by all which heclaimed was derived from being a beautifulbaby) purchased The Court, the principalhouse in the village, in 1969 on hisretirement from the City. He had beeneducated at Eton and belonged to adistinguished Hertfordshire banking family.Sue, of Guernsey and Yorkshire origin, withmany Dorset contacts, joined him on theirmarriage in 1973. For both it was a secondmarriage with grown and growing children.

Their approach to life was enthusiasticand it was always enjoyable to be in theircompany. They often travelled abroad, inlatter years returning to Thailand, alwaysreturning with amusing anecdotes. Formany years Bu pursued country sports andas an expert fly fisherman would visitScotland and Norway. At Chetnole Court hewas an avid and knowledgeable gardener, willingly passing on advice and winningmany prizes at the village flower shows forhis vegetables.

They both played an active role in thevillage, Sue hosting many village relatedevents while Bu undertook the leading rolefor Chetnole in the joint Leigh-ChetnoleParish Council. He became Chairman of theindependent Chetnole Parish Council whenit was established  in 1981, a position heoccupied for eighteen years until May 1999,with wisdom and tact at a time when thevillage was expanding and changing.

Their contributions to the village weremost generous, particularly in allowing thevillage to use their front field for the annualflower show.

We send them our thanks and bestwishes for a long continuing retirement.

British Legion Poppy Appeal 2010Once again,

most gratefulthanks to allthose whocontributed soverygenerously tothe PoppyAppeal this year, and also tothose who kindly gave their time to deliverpoppies around the village. All their effortsare very much appreciated.

The sum raised in Chetnole this yearamounted to £443.35. There was no Churchcollection this year, but this amount wasincreased by a further £30.80 as a result ofthose who kindly signed a Gift Aid form, making an overall total of £474.15, and anew record for the box collection.

A really magnificent achievement - welldone everybody.

In Memory of Brian HawkinsWhen Brian passed away in November,

we lost a good friend whom we had knownfor many years. Our friendship began whenhe lived in Yetminster and continued afterhe moved to Chetnole. Brian was a verygood painter and decorator and a verygenerous man, sometimes almost toogenerous. He was a knowledgeable personand a good conversationalist. He enjoyedwalking and we well remember many happyhours in the company of Brian and his latewife Laureen on Exmoor, Dartmoor andaround the Austrian lakes. Needless to say,we always ensured there was a pub enroute! Brian loved playing cards and his cardplaying and Sunday Lunchtime mates willtruly miss him and his sense of humour. Les and Connie Wallis

St.Peter’s Church95 people attended the Christmas

Village Hall repairs -Lottery Grant success!

We are very pleased to announce thatwe have been successful with ourapplication for an Awards For All Grant(part of the Big Lottery Fund) to helptowards the cost of repairing andredecorating the Village Hall.

With this money, plus funds from ourown account, we are able to go-ahead withthe project.

The work will start on January 25th. andis scheduled to run for approximately 5-6weeks, therefore the Hall will not beavailable for use during this period.

Future EventsThe Village Hall committee is currently

working on a number of ideas for eventsduring the early part of 2011. We will letyou know our event list in future editionswith our newly refurbished hall being onview at a themed evening on April 16.

Please watch this space for more details.

Christmas BingoThis event unfortunately fell victim to

the awful weather that we experienced atthe beginning of December. It was just toodangerous to travel to/from the Village Hall.

It was such a shame because Barbaraand Sue, plus Charlie and Ann put so mucheffort into arranging and running theseevenings.

Bingo now takes a break but, hopefully, will return in the Autumn.

Quiz Night – 20 November 2010A big “thank you” goes to Ray Dickerson

who, with the help of his wife Christine anddaughter Katherine, gave us all a veryenjoyable evening testing our brain power. This event has become a firm favouritewith locals and visitors; long may Raycontinue to find even more obscurequestions to test us upon.

The leading positions were as follows –1st– Running in the Family2nd – 3J’s +1 (Yetminster)3rd – One Lane (Chetnole).

Spookily, the first two teams occupiedthe same positions in the last Quiz in April!

In joint-4th position were 2 teams fromHermitage , The Muppets (Cindy andMervyn Durham with Penny and TonyEisdforth) and The Tecnams ( Jeremy andLiz Cozens with Mike and Rachel Rudd).

Congratulations to you all and thanks toeveryone for supporting the evening.

A total of £152 was raised for the VillageHall funds.

Carols by Candlelight24th December

Despite the incredibly low temperatureand icy conditions we had a full church forthe Carols by Candlelight service inHermitage Church on Christmas Eve. LuckilySimon Brignall managed to get to us but ValRowsell from Yetminster, who usually playsthe organ, had injured her wrist the eveningbefore. Christine Dickerson and Lucy Cozensstepped into the breach at the last minuteto save the day and shared the playing.

Josephine Mitchell sang a soloaccompanied by her sister Emily whicheveryone enjoyed.

Welcome back to all our ‘Leigh Readers’and a Happy New Year! Little did we knowwhen last we ‘spoke’ what lay ahead with allthat white stuff – it was probably a goodthing.

Next year there almost certainly won’tbe so many requests for a ‘real’ WhiteChristmas – 2010 saw so many events andfamily gatherings abandoned because itwas too dangerous even to try walking tofriends and neighbours. Fortunately somuch happens in Leigh that many hadalready enjoyed several Christmas dinnersbefore it was too late.

The Village Hall’s Grand Gourmet Rafflewas highly successful, with a magnificentrange of food and drink donated by theloyal exhibitors who make Leigh’s annualFood Fair such a popular event. The 40th

anniversary of the Senior Citizen’s annualfeast was celebrated in grand style and itwas very fitting that the guest of honourwas the widow of the Rev. Rodda, who isstill well-remembered for all the good workhe did for Church and Village so many yearsago. The Leigh Luncheon Club’s ChristmasSpecial was equally enjoyable a few dayslater, with a surprisingly large turnoutconsidering the arctic conditions, and manyof the other Clubs and Societies did their bitto ensure an adequate supply of mince piesand seasonal delicacies.

At least there is Spring to look forward tonow, another new beginning. Let us forgetabout VAT rises, fuel tax rises and othersuch financial squeezes! However my wiseold (Yorkshire) Granny said ‘There’s no gainwithout pain’ and ‘If you ain’t got it don’tspend it!’ The trouble is it is a bit late now. However there is much that is good (we’vewon The Ashes!) and much to look forwardto. Have a good month. David Reason

POPPY APPEAL 2010 I am always amazed at the generosity of

the Leigh, Batcombe, Hermitage and Hilfieldvillages.  And I know that the British Legion'sPoppy Appeal is a very worthy cause butnevertheless a huge thank you to all foryour very generous support. The House toHouse collection raised £834 and mygrateful thanks are due to the collectorswho go out in all weathers to knock ondoors.

To support the Appeal, BeverleyHarrison  entertained a full house in theLeigh Village Hall to a fascinating talkentitled: "Those Magnificent Women intheir Flying Machines", the story of theindefatigable lady pilots who deliveredaircraft from the factory to the field. It wasinteresting that there were some in theaudience whose family had billeted thosepilots  in the difficult war years. Thank youBeverley; you helped to raise an extra £480and give us a fascinating evening.

If you are the one, please except our apologies and now  oursincere thanks. We believe that the formatworked and everyone seemed to enjoy thedraw. We made £540 for the Village Hall. It seems a long time ago now sincewe held our Carol Service on December12th, which was very well attended. Thechurch looked lovely decorated withHolly & Ivy and candlelight. This wasfollowed by delicious mince pies andwine hosted by Gloria Abbey at the PostHouse – Many thanks Gloria for thislovely way to end the evening. Thecollection from the service and its 1/3share from the Christmas day andChristmas eve services gained the MercyShips £184, which is doubled by anational benefactor.

The midnight Christmas eve andChristmas day services were also wellattended. On Christmas morning it wascheering to see the church filled withseveral large three generation families. The collection from these two servicesgave £94 each to the Yeovil Mens’ Night

Shelter and the Yeovil Womans’ Refuge.About 22 people, and quite a few

dogs, turned out for the village walk – abrisk walk around the farm led by Mikeand Jo Batten and then back to ChurchFarm for soup and sausage buns and a

‘sit down’. £115 was donated to Dogs ForThe Disabled.

Welcome to Liz and Paul Sudden whohave moved in to No. 2 Croft Corner. Lizworks for the Council in Dorchester andenjoys walking. We hope they will bevery happy here.

Greetings from Michael in Ghana –he phoned Sue Footner on Christmasday and sent an email for New Years. Heis happy and the arm is doing well. Hesent his good wishes and thanks to allthe people in the Wriggle Valley thatmade his operation possible.

GRIT BINSDuring the recent cold

spell a small minority ofresidents in Yetminster wereseen taking grit from thebins in the village and usingit on their drives andpathways.

Not only is this illegal it isselfish, anti social and couldput lives at risk.

A spokesman forGloucester Police said in anarticle in the CotswoldJournal recently ‘Taking gritfrom bins for private use isagainst the law’. This viewhas been confirmed by theDistrict Council. Residentsusing grit from the bins forprivate use could beprosecuted for theft.

Grit in bins is for use onpavements, roads whichhave not been gritted by thecouncil and in areas muchused by the public such asoutside the Post Office.

When we have anothercold spell; please do NOTuse the grit in the bins foryour private use

YetminsterMethodist Church

This is our firstopportunity to pay tributeto John Nile, who sadly losthis long and courageousbattle against cancer anddied on December 28th2010. John had beeninvolved in our MethodistChurch since he andCynthia arrived in thevillage over 30 years ago.

John was chieflyinstrumental in organisingthe new access ramp intoour church, which wasopened last year. Twoyears of arrangingarchitects, builders, planning permissions andthe necessary grants: itinvolved a great deal offrustrating organisation –but one that ultimatelybrought John much

satisfaction – and which hasbrought compliments frommany people.

John had been aMethodist Lay Preachersince 1991 and had ledworship and preached in allthe churches of ourSherburne and YeovilCircuit and many in theNorth Dorset Circuit. Weassure Cynthia and familyof our continued thoughtsand prayers.

As many families havebeen and still are, affectedby the deaths anddebilitations caused bycancer, I trust that thefollowing poem, which Iread recently, may beappropriate and helpful toyou:

WHAT CANCERCANNOT DO

Cancer is so limited…It cannot cripple love,It cannot cripple hope,It cannot corrode faith,It cannot eat away peace,It cannot destroyconfidence,It cannot kill friendship,It cannot shut outmemories,It cannot silence courage,It cannot invade the soul,It cannot reduce eternallife,It cannot quench the spirit,It cannot lessen the powerOf the resurrection.

exciting Centenary Year, GirlguidingSherborne District (which includesYetminster Guides & Rangers and LeighBrownies) undertook to raise money andawareness for Guiding and two charitiesthat we are supporting as part of GirlguidingUK’s ‘Changing the World’ project.

We held a hugely successful CharityAuction and Dinner at Leigh Village Hall on27 November. 80 people enjoyed adelicious meal provided by local foodproducers and were entertained (andencouraged to part with their cash) by FelixRigg, musician and  principal auctioneer forKing Sturge.

In conjunction with the Auction, weraffled a fantastic Christmas Hamper whichcontained goodies generously donated bymany local companies. The winning ticket, drawn by celebrity chef Lesley Waters, wassold by Sherborne Brownies.

The two events raised a massive £3,377which will be split between the threecharities – Julia’s House Hospice – Dorset'sonly hospice dedicated to children with life-limiting conditions, CAMFED   - (Campaignfor Female Education) which provideseducation for girls in sub-saharan Africa(thus fighting the cycle of poverty andHIV/AIDS in this region) and GirlguidingSherborne District.

A huge Thank You to everyone who hassupported us, in many different ways: fromthose who attended, were very generousdonors, helped publicize the event and theGuides, Rangers and Leaders who workedvery hard in advance and on the night toserve and clear away. And of course, to JaneRead (whose daughter, Ethne, is a Guide atYetminster) the driving force behind it all!

The Reverend ProfessorCharlie Moule

My uncle, the renowned Anglicanbiblical scholar Charlie Moule, as he waspopularly known, came from an eminentchurch and missionary family. He obtaineda first at Cambridge and trained forordination at Ridley Hall where hisgrandfather was once Principal and wherehe himself became Vice-Principal at the ageof 28. His Cambridge career culminated inhis appointment as Lady MargaretProfessor of Divinity, a post he held for 25years, where he influenced a generation ofAnglican leaders including Rowan Williams(at whose wedding he officiated), JohnSentamu and the late Graham Stanton, hissuccessor as Lady Margaret Professor.

For just over four years, until his deathat the end of September 2007 at the age ofnearly 99, Charlie lived at The Old Vicarage,Leigh, where he was lovingly looked after byAnnie and her staff. Almost until the end hewas a regular worshipper in our churches, particularly Leigh and Yetminster and hemade many friends. Even those he didn't

know personally were glad to have 'shareda pew' with him.

When he died we found among hispapers several short and simple accounts ofwhat he believed, often in response torequests by local friends - not high-poweredtheological statements but the distilledwisdom of great age, beautifully writtenand accessible to everyone. There were alsoa few sermons he had preached, mainly locally, in earlier years (including  thestill remembered one on 'And can it be',preached at Songs of Praise in Chetnole in1996); and a charming little salute to thewhite doves at The Old Vicarage. These Ihave transcribed and prepared forpublication and Dr Robert Morgan, a parishpriest and theologian at Oxford, whopreached at  the Thanksgiving  Eucharist inYetminster, has added an extendedintroduction, placing the writings in thecontext of Charlie's life-long work as one ofthe leading theologians of the 20th Century.

We have also been allowed to print TheArchbishop of Canterbury's inspiringaddress at the Thanksgiving Service in GreatSt Mary's church in Cambridge. Now thewhole    collection has been published byCanterbury Press in the series 'CanterburyStudies in Spiritual Theology' under the title'Christ Alive and at Large - unpublishedwritings of C F D Moule'.   The book is inpaperback, ISBN 978-1-84825-018-5 andcan be ordered from bookshops, Amazon orfrom Canterbury Press online.

St Andrew’s Church ofEngland Primary School hasbeen everything I hoped itwould be and more.

The children of St.Andrew’s are, as you allknow, a joy to know andteach. They are bright, questioning and with astrong desire to learn andbecome good friends to allin their community.

The induction serviceheld for me in Septemberwas a lovely welcome fromthe Benefice – thank you toeveryone who came. Mychildren are still talkingabout it and Andrea, mywife, said how warm andfriendly the whole morningwas.

The Autumn term wascertainly a stereotypical firstterm for a new head teacher. My feet barely touched theground, so many people to

meet, so many new namesto learn. I am still askingsome people who they are.Apologies to all who havebeen asked this more thanonce! And then we had thesnow. Always a testing timefor schools all over thecountry, I soon realised thespecial nature of Dorset’srural schools and thedisruption that adverseweather can cause. Once

the buses and the schoolmeals service stop running itis extremely difficult toremain open. I was veryreluctant to close the school

– being the father of 3 younggirls, I do understand thechildcare issues facingparents. It was certainly abaptism of fire..or snow.Hopefully we’ve seen thelast of the last of it.

It was shame that wewere forced to miss the lastday of term as I was solooking forward to endingon a high with the churchservice and wishingeveryone a Happy Christmas. It isn’t the same on thephone or by email.

Thank you to everyonewho has made my first termsuch a delightful one.

The National Schools society.Celebrating 200 years of education.

Our church school, St. Andrew’s inYetminster is the proud inheritor of 200hundred years of education in churchschools across the country. The Nationalsociety founded in 1811 by Joshua Watsonunder the patronage of the Archbishop ofCanterbury, created a network of churchschools across the parishes of England.

The National society funded building, aswell as enlarging and equipping classroomsin nearly 17,000 schools. From 1870onwards this became the basis of ournational school system. Today there are5,000 Church of England schools in Walesand England, educating almost 1 millionchildren and young people. On February13th we will be celebrating this proudinheritance in our Faith Focus service at St.Andrew’s church, Yetminster.

St. Andrew’s school itself can look backanother 100 years further. The famousscientist and philosopher Robert Boyle, founder member of the Royal society, left abequest in his will for the foundation of aschool. John Warr, his executor bought anestate in Yetminster in 1699 and in 1711this estate was conveyed to the Boylecharitable trust under the terms Robert

Boyle’s will and a school established for ’tenboys from Yetminster, six from Leigh andfour from Chetnole’.

Amongst other institutions to benefitfrom his legacy were the grammar school ofBolton Abbey and Oxford University. Inwhat were then the American colonies heestablished a fund for the Christianeducation of native Americans at Harvarduniversity.

The original school, now a residentialproperty, can still be seen in Yetminster atthe end of the High Street, and is at presentundergoing renovations. The charitableTrust set up to administer the Boyle bequestcontinues its work of supporting youngpeople through education and creativeactivities today.

The Boyle school outgrew its originalhome and moved into the Old schoolbuilding in Church Street. In 1976, followingthe closure of the church schools in Leighand Chetnole, the school moved to itspresent site in a new building serving thewhole of the Wriggle valley.

We can be proud to follow in thefootsteps of such men and Boyle, describedas ‘a very perfect pattern, he was a devout

Christian, humble and modest... highlycharitable... delighted in nothing so much asdoing good’.

Our present church school continues tofoster not just a love of learning but thenurture of a Christian life. Men like Watsonand Boyle too would be proud to beassociated with our school where ‘living, learning and longing to make a better world’is written not just on our letter heads but inour hearts.

The Boyle Charitable Trust is alwaysready to consider requests for fundingeducational projects. Please apply by letterto: Boyle’s Educational Trust, Bound laneFarm, Leigh.

Died 28 December 2010aged 83 years

John was born inCornwall, to a MethodistFamily, the youngest of fourchildren. He attended theGrammar School in StAustell and then followed histwo brothers into the Navyat the earliest opportunity, joining up just before his16th birthday as anengineering apprentice. Heserved at Yeovilton (wherehe played football for themin the Perry Street League),aircraft carriers and alsoinstructed at the NavalElectrical School, leavingwith the rank of Chief PettyOfficer. After his Navy daysJohn's path took himthrough the Radio andTelevision trade, where he

met many people and mademany friends. He wouldoften amaze his young sonsNick and Phil by bringingblank TV screens to lifeproducing the cure from his''magic suitcase'' full oftelevision valves of all

descriptions. Ever theproblem solver, John joinedWestlands, working there for22 years, retiring as a ChiefElectrical Designer in 1989.

where they have livedhappily for the past 34 years, being involved in manyvillage activities as well asthe Methodist Church.

John had two sons, Philand Nick, they together withtheirs wives Julia and Laney, provided John with fourgranddaughters, Naomi,Melly, Anna and Lucy.

John was one of theStewards at the Chapel for25 years, during which timehe saw a number of changes,

including the new disabledramp and the creation of anew garden.

He also arranged theannual Autumn Fair, theproceeds were given to avariety of charities over theyears, most recently StMargaret’s Hospice and theDevon and Somerset AirAmbulance. Not only wereChapel members involved, but John recruited a list of

friends from around thevillage who always came tohelp. Even during his recentillness John retained hisinterest in his main hobby ofvegetable gardening, hisgardening skills wereacquired whilst ''Digging forVictory'' avoiding Latinlessons at Grammar School,to plant vegetables in theschool flower borders.

After retiring Johnenjoyed voluntary work fora few years as an Advisor at

Sherborne Citizens AdviceBureau. He also became aLay Preacher in theSherborne and YeovilMethodist Church Circuit. To John his faith was of theutmost importance and the

quiet way in which heshared that through leadingworship and preaching theword of God was a blessingto so many people. He wasmuch appreciated in thelocal Methodist Churchesand also by the North DorsetCircuit where John preachedannually as part of the LocalPreacher exchange. The lastservice he conducted was atYetminster.

Our thoughts andprayers are with Cynthia andthe family at this difficulttime, but they know there ismuch support for them.More than 100 peoplecrammed in to YetminsterMethodist Church for athanksgiving service and thesinging of the hymns Johnchose probablyreverberated throughoutthe village as thecongregation sang withgusto. Previous to this thecommittal at YeovilCrematorium wassupported by others andagain John had chosen thehymns he wanted, allcontaining aspects of thefaith he wanted to sharewith others, even beyondhis death. November/December 2010“In the bleak midwinter, frosty wind made moan,

Earth stood hard as iron,water like a stone;

Snow had fallen, snow on snow, snow on snow,

In the bleak midwinter, long ago.” Traditional carol

Yes – some of us thought that globalwarming had banished that type of winterforever. How wrong we were! Never before have werecorded a month like December, when thetemperature averaged a really bleak minus0.8C (30.6F) instead of the usual plus 5.0C(41F). Was this the first time that Dorsethas been colder than Siberia?Temperatures

The first days of November were mildbut the big freeze soon set in and continueduntil the New Year, when a welcome thawcleared the ice and snow that had ruined somany Christmas travel plans. AverageNovember temperatures were 28% belownormal but December was far colder, withthe average staying below zero throughoutinstead of +5C (41F). We usually have fewerthan 70 frosts a year but 2010 beat all

records with 111(35 of them inNovember andDecember).Rainfall

Novemberrainfall was justbelow theaverage amount but December’s total was70% less than usual. This resulted in totalrainfall for 2010 being 10% below average,at only 828mm (33”). Snow did not fall onmany days but it stayed frozen for so longthat it caused almost impossibly icyconditions on untreated lanes and roads.Sunshine

Although November was fairly sunnyDecember was the dullest on record, with a40% drop in sunshine and heavy cloud coverfor most of the month.Winds

Wind speeds in November were close tonormal but December was an exceptionallycalm month as the cold air refused to moveaway. The strongest gust was only 27 mph,33% weaker than the usual peak of 40mph.December. Even so, with such lowtemperatures the mildest breeze causedpainful wind chill. Phil Bryan

SPOTLIGHT on our community

My sister, Rose haslived in the village ofYetminster for over 80years; she was born on 22Apr 1920 and moved to thevillage in 1930. She hadthree brothers: Harold aretired policeman, Fredwho sadly died at the ageof 48 from war injuries andmyself. She attended theYetminster Girls andInfants school.

On leaving school atthe age of 14 years, Roseentered service as aparlour maid in severallarge houses in the localarea. She met her futurehusband Roy at school and

eventually romanceblossomed, however, theoutbreak of the SecondWorld War saw Royenlisted into the BritishArmy. Rose and Roy weremarried in the YetminsterChurch on Christmas Day1940. Roy saw action onseveral fronts and was oneof the lucky ones to berescued from the beachesat Dunkirk. After he wasdemobbed from the Army,Roy returned toYetminster and wasemployed as a driver andthen moved onto workingon the roads as a foremanfor the District Council.

Rose and Roy wereblessed with two children,a daughter Doreen andson Ivan and in turn theyprovided Rose with fourgrandchildren and twogreat grandchildren.

Over the years Rosehas enjoyed, and becamevery accomplished in, theart of gloving. She alsodeveloped into one ofYetminster’s own strictlycome dancing ball roomcelebrities, attendingdances in local village halls.

Sadly Roy died in 1997and Rose still livesindependently in Eastlands,Yetminster. She enjoys heroutings with the SeniorCitizens and enjoys goingon holiday to Majorca withher daughter Doreen andfamily. Rose is also luckyenough to have herdaughter-in-law Joyce andson Ivan living close by herin Yetminster who are ableto check on her every day.

This is a lady who hasseen Yetminster developthrough the Second WorldWar to present day - atruly remarkable lady.

Batcombe Farmer and RAF PilotBorn on 7th December 1919, at Court

Farm, Batcombe, Lisle was educatedinitially at home and later in Leigh. Atage twelve, he went to Hardy’s inDorchester as a weekly boarder until hewas eighteen. There, he won ascholarship to study agriculture atReading, where he completed one year, before volunteering to join the Royal AirForce.

After training at Blackpool andNewquay, he became a pilot. Hissquadron saw action in 1943 and 1944 inNorth Africa and the Mediterranean, where he was flying Walrus sea planes, rescuing airmen (German and Allied)who had been shot down. Later on, abook was written about the experiencesof No. 283 squadron (as well as otherswho did similar air-sea rescue work):

“Beyond Courage” (Norman Franks, GrubStreet, 2003). Lisle features prominentlyin this book. He ended up his career as apilot in Egypt flying Spitfires to giveBritish warships practice in shooting atthis type of aircraft, before finally beingsent home with yellow fever in early1945.

On returning from the war, hecompleted his studies at Reading andsecured a post as Vice Principal atRiseholme Farm Institute, near Lincoln. He helped set up the institute, buyingcows and recruiting the dairymen, aswell as lecturing the students on allaspects of dairy farming. In his free time,as well as playing hockey and iceskating,

he enjoyed ballroom dancing. The farminstitute organised dances to entertainstaff and students. They invited femalestaff from the nearby hospital as dancepartners, and would send a trailer withstraw bales to pick them up! At one ofthese dances, just before Christmas in1949, he met Lilian Meyer. They gotengaged in March 1952 and married inSeptember of the same year.

They lived at Riseholme until 1955,when his father died and they movedback to Dorset to help with the farm. They lived at Calfhay farm, where hebuilt a new dairy, barns and pig and calfhouses. They had a dairy of 90 cows, which he milked with his sister Madge,as well as sheep and pigs. Their childrenMartin, Beverley and Karen were bornwhile at Calfhay where the family liveduntil 1969, when they decided to sell thefarm and moved to live in Chetnole. Lislecarried on working Harris Farm,

Batcombe until his retirement in 1981,following a hip replacement.

During the time he lived in Dorset,Lisle was involved in a range of localactivities: the Young Farmers Club(organising the entertainment for theHarvest Supper on a number ofoccasions), the Drama Club (some mayremember his performances withYvonne Cull, Mrs Farrell and PaulHorsey) and the Discussion Club.

In 1981 they moved back toLincolnshire (Lilian’s mother and familystill lived there, as well as many friends),and stayed there for almost twenty-fiveyears. During this time, he activelypursued the many hobbies he had neverhad time for in Dorset: badminton, roller-skating, sailing, windsurfing, tennis andsnooker.

They came back to Dorset to live atStonecroft in 2004 to be closer to Madgeand Stella. Lisle was constantly busyimproving the farm or house – hedge-cutting, draining, building an extensionand new garage, a patio and steps. InJune 2010, at the age of 90, heannounced that he wouldn’t be doingany more building, as he felt a bit tired.

Lisle died on 28th August 2010,following eight months of illness. As hehad requested, his body was donated tothe University of Bristol for researchpurposes. He was a truly great man,who made a difference in the liveseveryone who knew him and he is sorelymissed.

Club NewsChetnole & Leigh Garden Club

Since the November report on theactivities of the Garden Club we have twoevents – The Christmas Party and our firstlecture of 2011. Both proved very enjoyableevenings – at the first wine was consumedand at the second, tea and coffee wasavailable. How things change! Must be theeconomy.

The Christmas Party was very wellattended, the main event – apart from thewining and dining - being an ingeniouslyconstructed and not too serious quiz witharound a dozen teams of six or morecompeting for pride and chocolate lollipops. The quiz was put together with great skill byRay and Christine Dickerson fromHermitage and was hugely enjoyed by thosepresent. This, the main course, wasfollowed by dessert in the form of a coupleof amusing offerings from the Club residentbard, John Head and washed down with amusical finale from strolling Jim Aldhouseaccompanied by the unique tones of DavidGough. Altogether a great evening!

The Club’s New Year kicked off onJanuary 10 in Chetnole Village Hall with alecture on the Flora & Fauna of The WesternCape given by the Club’s own intrepidAfricaphile, Blair Sibun. It was a tribute bothto the subject and the speaker that so manypeople turned out on a truly foul night tohear what Blair had to say. They were notdisappointed. Expressing his passion for thisbeautiful part of Africa with as much feelingas he does for his beloved orchids, Blairlaced his talk with his usual earthy humouras he wove images of regional scenery, wildlife and a wide ranging number of planttypes into an enchanting presentation.

From the well known profile ofCapetown’s Table Mountain we wereescorted via Cecil Rhodes’ KirstenboschBotanic Gardens and Cape Point NationalPark to Fynboss and finally to the coastalarea east of Capetown. We were introducedto Helmeted Guinea Fowl, Double CollaredSun Birds and Ostrich: to the CapeMountain Zebra, Black Girdled Lizard, apicnic stealing band of mugging beachBaboons, African Penguins (aka JackassPenguins) and breaching Southern RightWhales – a wide panoply of wildlife. However, Blair’s greatest moments ofexcitement were saved for the plant life ofwhich he showed us a huge range.

Apart from the national flower, theProtea, we were treated to exceptionalimages of glorious drifts of multi colouredwildflowers – including acres of goldenUrsinia and Blue Flax; also a wide range ofother native flowers – a number of whichsurvive (under normal conditions) in ourgardens and greenhouses. However, it wasunsurprising when one recalls that Blair is aRHS Award winner for orchids, to note hisdewy eyed expression when he showed thelocal S. African versions of that family –especially the Bonatea speciosa – betterknown as the Green Wood Orchid. The talkwas over all too soon, such had been thepleasure gained and the interest stimulatedby the subject and by Blair’s delivery.

The Club’s next event is on Monday 7February at 7.30pm in Chetnole Village Hallwhen the speaker will be Milly Carmichael;her subject is “Compost!” – a fascinatingtopic dear to the hearts of all truegardeners!

Leigh & District Discussion ClubHappy New Year to all, hope it will be

a good year for everyone. Our speaker forJanuary was Mr Bill Moores (member ofThe Mary Rose Trust), who wasaccompanied by his wife. He was dressedin full mariner’s clothing of the era, andgave a talk and showed slides on “TheSinking, Recovery and Future” of the MaryRose, flagship of Henry VIII, named afterhis favourite sister. Built in 1509, theMary Rose was made of oak with deckingof elm and she carried four masts. It took18 months to construct and she was inservice for 34 years.

On 19th July 1545 she sank inSouthampton waters. Only 35 out ofapproximately 509 crew and officers onboard survived. She went down on herstarboard side and lay on the bottom ofthe sea for many years. After 3 years and

approximately 25,000 dives by 600 divers, she was raised and placed into herpresent position at Portsmouth Docks. She is kept under cover in a purpose builtbuilding, where she is constantly sprayedwith a special anti-rotting solution. However a new museum is to beconstructed which will be built over theoriginal site, where one will be able toview all the way around her.

Mr Moore brought many replicas ofobjects recovered which he had made –they were most interesting. He wasthanked by the Chairman, CharlieOsmond and then tea was served.Business followed on. The next meeting

on February 1st is a talk by Mr Ching“Dorset Weather Man” at Leigh Village Hallstarting at 7.30pm. Please come and joinus.
