    Comprehension 2

Thinking out of the box is one skill, among all other skills, that has shot toprominence. How about a novel approach to help think differently, or out ofthe box? Crossword-solving is one of the lesser-known approaches tothinking differently. A crossword grid usually has white & black squares in theratio of 70:30 and sufficient no. of across and down clues to help you fill thewhite ones. Just as in any other game, one needs a strategy to solve a cross

word. A seasoned cross word solver rarely reads the clues in the orderpresented.

As part of the game plan or strategy to avoid straight jacketed thinking, thesolver usually ha s a quick glance at the structure of the grid and at the cluesto get the feel of the greed and forms a quick strategy to solve thecrossword. The best part is that with every new grid, the solver has anopportunity to apply a new strategy and learn from past experiences, therebyrefining his thinking process and pattern. It is this self-assessment & selffeedback that makes solving crossword so fulfilling and amusing.

The crossword is one of those rare games that test your knowledge andinterest in any and every area of life. Conventional education and workpressure leaves us little time to catch up with a lot of things that exists inthis world, thereby limiting our arena of thought. Crossword- solvers get awonderful chance to delve into newer vistas of life, expanding their mentalarena each day.

The tidbit of information one acquires essentially does two things: makes thesolver realize how little he knows of the world outside his own and a bit more

    8/50

humble. With the brain introduced tonewer and newer wor(l)ds with every new grid, the solver essentially is

expanding the size ofthe box. The beauty of a crossword lies in the quality of its clues. A goodcrossword gridprovides clues that strive to tease and challenge the mind to think at atangent. It demands of you to appreciate different meanings of the samething still known in management jargon ascreativity and innovation.

In fact a good crossword has clues that tax your brain for quite a while and, when you eventuallycrack them, you tell yourself wasnt that obvious?. Lets take an example.Clue: salty letters(*A*L).Just in case you couldnt crack that, the answer is NACL. Similarly theanswer for theclue Makeup man could be LIAR. It is evident smart clues make you think

    tangentially or outof the box.

Crossword challenge over-confidence. One may solve numerous crosswordsand gradually develop preconceived notions about a particular clue, notknowing that this time it may bedifferent. For example, you may know that the answer for the clue Capital ofIndia(5) is Delhi. However it is also a possibility that the answer is Rupee. If you think youhave learnt the trick, try this one: three-letter word for Capital of Zimbabwe.

Well, dont get annoyed, the answer is Zee. So solving crosswords asks usto challenge our own time-tested assumptions. It demand thinking out of adifferent box. While crosswords can help us think differently, that holds trueonly for god quality crosswords. Lay off grids that you crack in a jiffy. Even ifsome clues look Region-specific, the quality of a crossword makes it worththe effort. While a good vocabulary helps solve crosswords, it is amisconception to believe that one cant do without it.

Solving crosswords is much more about thinking than it is about memorizingwords and their meanings. All said and done, you need enormous patienceand diligence to really get the best outof solving crosswords. As with life, good things take a long time to happen.

8.With the brain introduced to newer and newer words with every newgrid, the solver essentially is expanding the size of the box. What do youinfer from this statement?a)Crosswords differ in size b)we get to enrich our vocabulary by solvingcrosswords.c)A regular crossword solver expands his knowledge of the world through

words.d)Our conventional education does not help us explore the world.

    9. How can can make up man and LIAR be related?a)A make up man can disgusted people and fool othersb)When a person makes up something,it means he is trying to utterfalsehoods to save his skinc)When you cannot be present somewhere you make up for your absence bysending someoneelse.d)When you have missed classes you make up by studying harder

    10. According to the author you need all the following to solve crosswordsEXCEPT?a)A greatdeal of patience b)A passion for solving themc)great knowledge d)A good vocabulary

    11. It can be inferred from the passage thata)The author is passionate about crosswords b)Todays youth has nopatience for crosswordsc)Crosswords are a waste of time d)Crosswords have lost their orginality

    12. The idiom to think out of the box in the passage meansa)to be conventionalb)to be overconfidentc)to be able to decipher different connotations of any stated thingd)not to look clues

Marie was born in 1867 in Warsaw, Poland, where her father was a professorof physics. At the early age, she displayed a brilliant mind and a blithepersonality. Her great exuberance for learning prompted her to continue withher studies after high school. She became disgruntled, however, when shelearned that the university in Warsaw was closed to women. Determined toreceive a higher education, she defiantly left Poland and in 1891 entered theSorbonne, a French university, where she earned her master's degree anddoctorate in physics.

Marie was fortunate to have studied at the Sorbonne with some of thegreatest scientists of her day, one of whom was Pierre Curie. Marie andPierre were married in 1895 and spent many productive years working

Marie was stunned by thishorrible misfortune and endured heartbreaking anguish. Despondently sherecalled their close relationship and the joy that they had shared in scientificresearch. The fact that she had two young daughters to raise by herselfgreatly increased her distress.

Curie's feeling of desolation finally began to fade when she was asked tosucceed her husband as a physics professor at the Sorbonne. She was thefirst woman to be given a professorship at the world-famous university. In1911 she received the Nobel Prize in chemistry for isolating radium.

There were many greek dialects and there werecertain differences intheir style of writing. Lastly the lonian style of lettering was adopted. Ingeneral and after 400BC the letters became uniform. of the dialects. But,during the establishment of Alexanders empire in the 4th century BC andafter the breakdown ofold political barriers, uniformity took place in the spoken language. This formof language wascalled the Koine (means the common language) or Hellenistic Greek (400BC-600AD).

It replaced the other dialects and the speaking and writing systems weremuch standardized.Grammar also changed in different periods. A change of language is noticedin the writings ofPlato and Demosthenes. The spoken language still kept on changing evenduring the period ofByzantine empire(500-1500AD) and the written language kept on improvingwhich created a bigrift between the local vernacular and the literary greek. This situation gave

birth to a separatekind of demotic language of general everyday use.

All the major phonological and grammatical changes which are seen betweenkoine and themodern greek mostly happened within this period. Earlier there were 3numbers for pronounsand verbs, singular, dual and plural. Then dual was dropped and onlysingular and plural wereleft.

From ancient Greek to modern Greek the formation of many words were alsochanged. Forexample the ancient Greek word pente(5) became pende, hepta and octo (7and 8) became eftaand okhto, paidia(boys) became pedhya and so on. There were also semanticchanges in certainwords just as : the word alogho which was previously meant irrational, laterit meant horse,

skiazome which previously meant I am in shadow, later it meant I fear.

The vocabulary of greek language consists of local collections andborrowings. Considering theorigin of Greeks , there were many Mycenaean words in 2nd millennium BCwhose original formcorresponded to certain greek words like Leon (Lion), onos (Ass), plephas(ivory) etc.

By using pre-verbs, by forming compounds and by adding prefixes or suffixesto this primewords they enriched their vocabulary. Later on they also borrowed a

Mount Vesuvius, a volcano located between the ancient Italian cities ofPompeii andHerculaneum, has received much attention because of its frequent anddestructive eruptions. The most famous of these eruptions occurred in A. D.79.

  • 8/4/2019 (Www.entrance Exam.net) 20Jul 2004

    14/50

The volcano had been inactive for centuries. There was little warning of thecoming eruption, although one account unearthed by archaeologists says that a hard rain anda strong wind haddisturbed the celestial calm during the preceding night. Early the nextmorning, the volcanopoured a huge river of molten rock down upon Herculaneum, completelyburying the city andfilling in the harbor with coagulated lava.

Meanwhile, on the other side of the mountain, cinders, stone and ash raineddown on Pompeii.Sparks from the burning ash ignited the combustible rooftops quickly. Largeportions of the citywere destroyed in the conflagration. Fire, however, was not the only cause ofdestruction.Poisonous sulphuric gases saturated the air. These heavy gases were not

buoyant in theatmosphere and therefore sank toward the earth and suffocated people.

Over the years, excavations of Pompeii and Herculaneum have revealed agreat deal about thebehavior of the volcano. By analyzing data, much as a zoologist dissects aspecimen animal, scientist have concluded that the eruption changed large portions of thearea's geography. Forinstance, it turned the Sarno River from its course and raised the level of thebeach along the Bay of Naples. Meteorologists studying these events have

also concluded that Vesuvius caused ahuge tidal wave that affected the world's climate.

In addition to making these investigations, archaeologists have been able tostudy the skeletonsof victims by using distilled water to wash away the volcanic ash. Bystrengthening the brittlebones with acrylic paint, scientists have been able to examine the skeletonsand draw conclusions about the diet and habits of the residents. Finally, theexcavations at both Pompeii and Herculaneum have yielded many examplesof classical art, such as jewelry made of bronze, which is an alloy of copper and tin.

The eruption of Mount Vesuvius and its tragic consequences have provided uswith a wealth ofdata about the effects that volcanoes can have on the surrounding area.Today volcanologists can locate and predict eruptions, saving lives andpreventing the destruction of cities and cultures.

Directions for Questions 11-16: Read the passage and answer thequestions that follow on the basis of the information provided in the passage. The pioneers of the teaching of science imagined that its introduction intoeducation would remove the conventionality, artificiality, and backward-lookingness which were characteristic;of classical studies, but they weregravely disappointed. So, too, in their time had the humanists thought thatthe study of the classical authors in the original would banish at once the dullpedantry and superstition of mediaeval scholasticism. The professionalschoolmaster was a match for both of them, and has almost managed tomake the understanding of chemical reactions as dull and as dogmatic anaffair as the reading of Virgil's Aeneid.

The chief claim for the use of science in education is that it teaches a childsomething about the actual universe in which he is living, in making himacquainted with the results of scientific discovery, and at the same timeteaches him how to think logically and inductively by studying scientific

method. A certain limited success has been reached in the first of these aims, but practically none at all in the second. Those privileged members of thecommunity who have been through a secondary or public school educationmay be expected to know something about the elementary physics andchemistry of a hundred years ago, but they probably know hardly more thanany bright boy can pick up from an interest in wireless or scientific hobbiesout of school hours.

As to the learning of scientific method, the whole thing is palpably a farce.Actually, for the convenience of teachers and the requirements of theexamination system, it is necessary that the pupils not only do not learnscientific method but learn precisely the reverse, that is, to believe exactlywhat they are told and to reproduce it when asked, whether it seemsnonsense to them or not. The way in which educated people respond to suchquackeries as spiritualism or astrology, not to say more dangerous onessuch as racial theories or currency myths, shows that fifty years ofeducation in the method of science in Britain or Germany has produced novisible effect whatever.

The only way of learning the method of science is the long and bitter way ofpersonal experience, and, until the educational or social systems are alteredto make this possible, the best we can expect is the production of a minorityof people who are able to acquire some of the techniques of science and a

still smaller minority who are able to use and develop them.

Directions for Questions 17-20: Read the passage and answer thequestions that follow on the basis of the information provided in the passage.Furthermore, insofar as any conclusion about its author can be drawn fromfive or six plays attributed to him, the Wakefield Master is without exceptionconsidered to be a man of sharp contemporary observation. He was, probably clerically educated, as indicated by his Latin and music, his Biblicaland patristic lore. Even today he is remembered for his his quick sympathyfor the oppressed and forgotten man, his sharp eye for character, a readyear for colloquial, vernacular turns of speech and a humor alternately rudeand boisterous, coarse and happy. Therefore in spite of his conscious artistryas can be seen in his feeling for intricate metrical and stanza forms, he isregarded as a kind of medieval Steinbeck, indignantly angry at,uncompromisingly and even brutally realistic in presenting the plight of theagricultural poor.

It is now fairly accepted to regard the play as a kind of ultimate point in the

secularization of the medieval drama. Therefore more stress has been laid onit as depicting realistically humble manners and pastoral life in the bleak ofthe west riding of Yorkshire on a typically cold night of December 24th. Afterwhat are often regarded as almost ''documentaries'' given in the threesuccessive monologues of the three shepherds, critics go on to affirm thatthe realism is then intensified into a burlesque mock-treatment of theNativity. Finally as a sort of epilogue or after-thought in deference to theBiblical origins of the materials, the play slides back into an atavistic mood ofearly innocent reverence. In actuality, the final scene is the culminatingscene and also the raison detre of the introductory ''realism.''

Superficially the present play supports the conventional view of its mood ofsecular realism. At the same time, the ''realism'' of the Wakefield Master is ofa paradoxical turn. His wide knowledge of people, as well as books indicatesno cloistered contemplative but one in close relation to his times. Still, thatlife was after all a predominantly religious one, a time which never neglectedthe belief that man was a rebellious and sinful creature in need ofredemption . So deeply (one can hardly say ''naively'' of so sophisticated awriter) and implicitly religious is the Master that he is less able (or lesswilling) to present actual history realistically than is the author of the BromeAbraham and Isaac. His historical sense is even less realistic than that ofChaucer who just a few years before had done for his own time ''costumeromances,'' such as The Knight's Tele, Troilus and Cressida, etc.

Furthermore, used highly romantic materials, which could excuse his takingliberties with history.

    17. Of the following statements, which is not true of Wakefield Master?

    a) He and Chaucer were contemporaries.b) Wakefield Master is remembered as having written five or six realisticplays.

Much of the information we have today about chimpanzees comes from the groundbreaking,

long-term research of the great conservationist, Jane Goodall.

Jane Goodall was born in London, England, on April 3, 1934. On her second birthday, her fathergave her a toy chimpanzee named Jubilee. Jubilee was named after a baby chimp in the London

Zoo, and seemed to foretell the course Janes life would take. To this day, Jubilee sits in a chair in

Janes London home. From an early age, Jane was fascinated by animals and animal stories. By

the age of 10, she was talking about going to Africa to live among the animals there. At the time,

in the early 1940s, this was a radical idea because women did not go to Africa by themselves.

As a young woman, Jane finished school in London, attended secretarial school, and then worked

for a documentary filmmaker for a while. When a school friend invited her to visit Kenya, she

worked as a waitress until she had earned the fare to travel there by boat. She was 23 years old.

Once in Kenya, she met Dr. Louis Leakey, a famous paleontologist and anthropologist. He was

impressed with her thorough knowledge of Africa and its wildlife, and hired her to assist him andhis wife on a fossil-hunting expedition to Olduvai Gorge. Dr. Leakey soon realized that Jane was

the perfect person to complete a study he had been planning for some time. She expressed her

interest in the idea of studying animals by living in the wild with them, rather than studying dead

    animals through paleontology.

Dr. Leakey and Jane began planning a study of a group of chimpanzees who were living on the

shores of Lake Tanganyika in Kenya. At first, the British authorities would not approve their

plan. At the time, they thought it was too dangerous for a woman to live in the wilds of Africa

alone. But Janes mother, Vanne, agreed to join her so that she would not be alone. Finally, the

authorities gave Jane the clearance she needed in order to go to Africa and begin her study

In July of 1960, Jane and her mother arrived at Gombe National Park in what was then calledTanganyika and is now called Tanzania. Jane faced many challenges as she began her work. The

chimpanzees did not accept her right away, and it took months for them to get used to her

presence in their territory. But she was very patient and remained focused on her goal. Little by

little, she was able to enter their world.

At first, she was able to watch the chimpanzees only from a great distance, using binoculars. As

time passed, she was able to move her observation point closer to them while still using

camouflage. Eventually, she was able to sit among them, touching, patting, and even feeding

them. It was an amazing accomplishment for Jane, and a breakthrough in the study of animals in

the wild. Jane named all of the chimpanzees that she studied, stating in her journals that she feltthey each had a unique personality.

One of the first significant observations that Jane made during the study was that chimpanzees

make and use tools, much like humans do, to help them get food. It was previously thought that

humans alone used tools. Also thanks to Janes research, we now know that chimps eat meat as

well as plants and fruits. In many ways, she has helped us to see how chimpanzees and humans

are similar. In doing so, she has made us more sympathetic toward these creatures, while helping

    us to better understand ourselves.

The study started by Jane Goodall in 1960 is now the longest field study of any animal species in

their natural habitat. Research continues to this day in Gombe and is conducted by a team of

    trained Tanzanians.

Janes life has included much more than just her study of the chimps in Tanzania. She pursued agraduate degree while still conducting her study, receiving her Ph.D. from Cambridge University

in 1965. In 1984, she received the J. Paul Getty Wildlife Conservation Prize for helping millionsof people understand the importance of wildlife conservation to life on this planet. She has been

married twice: first to a photographer and then to the director of National Parks. She has one son.

Dr. Jane Goodall is now the worlds most renowned authority on chimpanzees, having studied

their behavior for nearly 40 years. She has published many scientific articles, has written two

books, and has won numerous awards for her groundbreaking work. The Jane Goodall Institute

for Wildlife Research, Education, and Conservation was founded in 1977 in California but moved

to the Washington, D.C., area in 1998. Its goal is to take the actions necessary to improve the

    environment for all living things.

Dr. Goodall now travels extensively, giving lectures, visiting zoos and chimp sanctuaries, and

talking to young people involved in environmental education. She is truly a great conservationistand an amazing human being.

There are some men who seem to be always on the lookout for trouble and, to tell the truth, they

stormiest and most disagreeable places. Yet, after all it is not such a bad place and the difficulty is

often in the man who is too thin- skinned. On the other hand, the man who goes out expectingpeople to be like himself, kind and brotherly, will be surprised at the kindness he meets even in

the most unlike quarters. A smile is apt to be met met with a respective smile while the sneer is

just as apt to provoke a snarl. Men living in the same neighborhood may live vastly different

lives. But it is not the neighborhood which is quarrelsome, but the man within us. And we have itin out power to change our neighborhood into a pleasant one by simply changing our own ways.
