Sarah wanted to plan the day all by herself, but didn’t know just how far her £100 would go.

She listed the costs;

They have decided the cheapest way to get there is to drive. On the AA Route Finder website it says that Leeds United’s ground is 413km away from Brighton. The boys want to get there 30 minutes before kick off to watch some of the warm up. Kick off is at 15.00 hours. What time do the boys need to leave Brighton?

Clubs without billionaire owners sometimes have trouble making enough money to pay players wages. Clubs make money in many different ways.

Brainstorm as a class a few of the ways clubs generate an income before answering the questions below.Brighton and Hove Albion don’t have a billionaire owner. The owner of the club relies on the supporters buying tickets and merchandise from the club shop to support a large part of the players’ wages.

In January and August clubs are allowed to buy and sell players. These are called transfers. When a player is sold a figure is agreed between the two clubs involved.Transfers can be quite complicated because many people become involved in the process and the fee agreed is broken down and shared out.When Nicholas Anelka recently moved from Bolton to Chelsea a fee of £15 million was agreed. Question 11 - Supporting Sussex

Jim is a Sussex season ticket holder, which costs him £350. He goes to watch every home game over at Hove and gets there by bus. During the season between April and September he attends 8 league matches (4 days each). It costs Jim £3.20 to get a day saver every day travelling on the bus.

How much does it cost Jim to travel by bus each day to all of the games?

Each day he is at the match he buys 2 cups of tea and a sandwich. Cups of tea cost 50p and a sandwich costs £2.50.

How much does it cost him to do this for all the games he attends?

Question 12 - Travelling to a game

Sussex Cricket Club play teams in the leagues all around the country, from Surrey and Hampshire to Durham and Yorkshire.From Sussex to Yorkshire it is 450 miles. Tom and his dad decided to drive and go and watch Sussex play away against Yorkshire.They filled up their car with petrol and it cost £55. They made it to Yorkshire and before they came home they had to put another £30 in to make sure they had enough. After Tom’s dad re-filled the car, he estimated it had cost him £80 to drive to Yorkshire and back.

Compared to other cricket clubs across the country, Sussex isn’t one of the richest. They have to think of as many different ways to make money as they can. Apart from selling tickets, think of different ways that the cricket club could make money.The club have a number of ways of making revenue, including advertising hoardings, club shop, bar and refreshment stalls around the ground and hiring out facilities around the ground.

There is space for 200 advertising hoardings. The club charge a company £1000 to buy one to advertise for a season.

If the club sold all of their hoardings how much would the club make from the advertising hoardings?

Apart from league games Sussex play in 3 other tournaments. For these tournaments they split the fixtures home and away. For Sussex’s home games they have on average crowds of 4,300 and sell tickets at an average price of £14.

Brighton and Hove Playing for Success have written these numeracy questions to complement the What Money Means (WMM) project, which is currently running in the city. WMM, a project funded by HSBC bank and managed by the Personal Finance Education Group (‘pfeg’), is aimed at developing financial literacy in primary schools.

The questions explore a variety of financial topics related to the Sussex County Cricket Club and Brighton and Hove Albion football club. There are questions related to ticket sales, purchasing new players, players’ salaries and PAYE and National Insurance and many other topics with a financial aspect to them. The questions could be used to complement a Finance Day or Finance Week. Alternatively, they could be used simply to improve Maths performance by presenting the subject in a real life scenario. It is important to include discussion on the topics raised in order that children learn how the world of business finance works and to be able to develop the skills needed to make informed financial decisions.

Questions are aimed at Level 4 and are intended as 10 minute word problems using calculators for the most part, although some are longer. The pupil booklet was planned to be used as a text book and the CDRom allows teachers to print off individual questions or to display them on an interactive whiteboard.

The Playing for Success teachers are happy to come into school to support learning or, alternatively, children could visit the Withdean Stadium or the County Cricket ground to solve the problems on site.

Question 7 – Club Finance and Salaries

Clubs without billionaire owners sometimes have trouble making enough money to pay players wages. Clubs make money in many different ways. Brainstorm as a class a few of the ways clubs generate an income before answering the questions below.Brighton and Hove Albion don’t have a billionaire owner. The owner of the club relies on the supporters buying tickets and merchandise from the club shop to support a large part of the player’s wages.

On average the 15 players in the first team squad are paid £2,500 a week?What is the weekly wage bill for the chairman for the Albion’s first team squad?15 x £2,500 = £37,500 per week

What is the monthly wage bill for the first team squad if we assume there are four weeks in a month?£37,500 x 4 = £150,000

Brighton will on average have two home games per month. The average ticket price is £20. In order to pay the first team squads’ wages, how many tickets will they need to sell per month to cover the costs?£150,000 / £20 = 7,500

The capacity of the Withdean stadium is 8,850. To cover monthly wages, they only need to sell 7,500 seats. On average; Brighton and Hove Albion sell 5,244 seats per home game. How much money do they accumulate on average per month to cover wages?£20 x 5,244 = £104,880 x 2 = £209,760

Question 8 – Player Transfers

In January and August clubs are allowed to buy and sell players. These are called transfers. When a player is sold a figure is agreed between the two clubs involved.Transfers can be quite complicated because many people become involved in the process and the fee agreed is broken down and shared out.When Nicholas Anelka recently moved from Bolton to Chelsea a fee of £15 million was agreed. Jim is a Sussex season ticket holder, which costs him £350. He goes to watch every home game over at Hove and gets there by bus. During the season between April and September he attends 8 league matches (4 days each). It costs Jim £3.20 to get a day saver every day travelling on the bus.

How much does it cost Jim to travel by bus each day to all of the games?

8 x 4 x £3.20= £102.40

Each day he is at the match he buys 2 cups of tea and a sandwich. Cups of tea cost 50p and a sandwich costs £2.50.

How much does it cost him to do this for all the games he attends?2 x 50p= £1 £1 + £2.50 = £3.50 £3.50 x 4 x 8= £112

Question 12 - Travelling to a game

Sussex Cricket Club play teams in the leagues all around the country, from Surrey and Hampshire to Durham and Yorkshire.From Sussex to Yorkshire it is 450 miles. Tom and his dad decided to drive and go and watch Sussex play away against Yorkshire.They filled up their car with petrol and it cost £55. They made it to Yorkshire and before they came home they had to put another £30 in to make sure they had enough. After Tom’s dad re-filled the car, he estimated it had cost him £80 to drive to Yorkshire and back.
