Dear WAHPERD Members,
I hope everyone is enjoying the unique
Wyoming Spring weather. I wanted to take
time to thank each member who attended a
great Central District Conference in Jackson
in February 2013. President Scott
Strohmeyer and the committee put together
an excellent convention at Snow King
Resort. The keynote speaker was Cowboy
Ethics author J.P. Owen and the theme Ride
for the Brand was a huge success. Thanks to
Nancy Eklund and Gay Hughes for their hard
work serving as convention managers.
The next WAHPERD convention will be held in Douglas November 6-8, 2013. I have
decided to continue the “Code of the West” idea with the theme Do What Has to Be Done! The
Wyoming state legislature adopted the code of the west as its official state code in 2010. We all
know that we must Do What Has to Be Done in providing our students appropriate physical
activity and knowledge. I ask you, Do What Has to Be Done by getting involved and taking
responsibility for our profession. Please contribute to WAHPERD by helping put together an
exceptional convention in Douglas this November. The presentation proposal forms can be found
on our state website (www.wyomingahperd.com) as well as in this Newsletter.
I hope all of you are also planning on participating in the Let’s Move Wyoming initiative.
Schools and districts all around the state are collaborating in an effort to get students moving
during the first week of May. Please go to our state website for more information and to register
for the event.
I hope some of you had the opportunity to attend the 2013 national AAHPERD convention in
Charlotte, South Carolina. This summer I will be attending the AAHPERD Central District
Leadership Summit in Steamboat Springs. I hope this will help me become a better advocate for
the WAHPERD. Ultimately, this includes advocating for the importance of physical activity and
healthy lifestyles for each of our students.
I want to challenge each of you to get involved with WAHPERD by becoming a member,
attending our convention, and/or participating on our board. The organization provides
many resources and opportunities for networking with professionals throughout the state.
Participating in and using these important resources ultimately make us more effective educators.
Please visit our new website at www.wyomingahperd.com for all information regarding
WAHPERD. Thanks to Don Brinkman for design and maintenance of this new state website. I
wish each of you a great finish to your school year and please let me know if you have any
questions related to WAHPERD.

Hello everyone!
I hope everyone had a great year AND helped those
classroom teachers make it through PAWS and
NWEA. Every day in the spring semester I hear,
“Nathan, I should have been a physical education
teacher!” I do remind them of the data and growth
that I monitor but I also brag that I really do have
the best job in the building!
As I look back at the 2012-2013 school year, I
realize I have once again had the best year yet. I
continue to grow, improve, and learn more about the
craft of teaching children (including those spirited
kinders!). This year I really focused on creating an
appreciation for recreation/lifetime activities with
my students. My first graders worked all 4th
quarter
on different dances to perform for the school. My
2nd
graders received four swimming lessons. My 3rd
graders were able to go to the bowling alley four
separate times. The 4th
graders participated in four
ice skating lessons, while the 5th
graders had the choice to ski or snowboard at Hogadon. And my
Kindergarteners learned how to NOT make the big vein bulge in my forehead! I have had so
much joy watching my students try new things and go different places!
I have also decided to try new things and go new places… professionally that is. Moving from
VP-elect of Recreation to President-elect is quite a jump and a step out of my comfort zone. I
have always considered myself a workhorse, not so much a leader; however, it is my time to step
up and lead this wild herd! I will be attending the National Conference in Charlotte later this
month as well as a leadership conference in June. I plan to build a knowledge base so I can
effectively lead this organization just like the greats have done before me.
See you all in Douglas!

My morning cup of Joe…………………..
Dear WAHPERD Membership,
So Much Happening! AAHPERD in Charlotte may be bringing lots of changes to our National
organization AAHPERD—Shane Tweeter, Nathan Vondra, and I will bring back news of the direction of
AAHPERD post-convention. The Central District conference in Jackson had two terrific keynote
speakers that left us all proud to be an educator. Cowboy Ethics and Cowboy Values as well as The Try
sit on my coffee table and remind me of our noble profession. Jayne Greenberg shared some truly
exciting news with our Let’s Move Active Schools and the collaborative efforts of many organizations that
have a passion for the health of our children. Let’s Move Active Schools is a collaborative effort to
empower “school champions”—teachers, administrators, staff and parents—to create active environments
that engage students in movement every day. This comprehensive program guides champions along a
simple six step process and provides free resources and training to help them increase physical activity
before, during, and after school. Even if you signed up before with Let’s Move in School YOU
MUST SIGN UP AGAIN at: www.letsmoveschools.org. Which has led us to so many links,
tweets, posts and text messages about the Shape of the Nation! Please consider being a part of
the month of May initiative Let’s Move Wyoming. Here are the registration forms and the
information sheet. Please return the registration form to me, Nancy Eklund,
[email protected]. We will compile all of the forms so the Governor’s Council has a
record of all of your efforts to award your school with a signed certificate from Governor Mead.

Celebrate MOVE WYOMING on May 7 or any day during the 1st week of May, which is
National Sport and Physical Education Week, or the month of May!
Physical activity isn’t an option. It’s a necessity! Help our kids reach their greatest
potential. In only six states is physical education required physical at every grade level and only
20% of school districts require daily recess. Only 1 in 3 kids is active every day. ACTIVE
KIDS PERFORM BETTER! Active kids have increased concentration and attention, and up to
40% will have higher test scores. Here are five strategies to MOVE WYOMING: (1) Build
physical education programs that are inclusive, effective, and engaging; (2) Have physical
activity during school that enhances existing lesson plans with classroom based activity; (3)
Include physical activity before and after school by accessing programming guides and tool kits
for successful before and after school activity programs; (4) Involve school staff — advocate for
physical activity from program planning to day to day details; and (5) Engage family and
community members by making your school the community center for physical activity.
MOVE WYOMING brings together organizations across sectors to celebrate physical
education and increase physical activity in schools. The following groups are joining MOVE
WYOMING to kick off this effort!
● The Governor’s Council on Physical Fitness and Sport
● The Wyoming Association for Health, Physical Education, Recreation and Dance
● The University of Wyoming Department of Kinesiology and Health
● Wyoming Department of Health
● Public Health Division
● Cowboy State Fitness Equipment
● Western Dairy Association
● EDGE Disc Golf
The American Alliance for Health, Physical education, Recreation, and Dance (AAHPERD), an
alliance of five national associations, six district associations, and a Research Consortium,
provides its members with a comprehensive and coordinated array of resources, support, and
programs to help practitioners improve their skills to further the health and well-being of the
American public. It is the largest organization of professionals involved in physical education,
recreation, fitness, dance, health promotion and all specialties related to achieving an active,
healthy lifestyle. AAHPERD serves 20,000 members and has its headquarters in Reston,
Virginia, 25 miles west of Washington DC. For more information, visit www.aahperd.org.

“Do what has to be done”
This theme evolved from the “Ride for the brand” theme from the Central District conference in
Jackson. That theme was derived from the code of the west in James P. Owens book Cowboy
Ethics. The Wyoming state legislature adopted the code of the west as the official state code of
Wyoming in 2010. I feel we are lucky to be health and physical educators in this great state. We
know we need to “Do what has to be done” in providing our students appropriate physical
activity and knowledge. My personal goal is to increase participation in our organization as well
as increase attendance at our state convention. I ask you to “Do what has to be done” by getting
involved and taking responsibility for our profession. Please contribute to WAHPERD by
helping put together an exceptional convention in Douglas next November.

WAHPERD Members,
I would like to thank Doug Alexander, Eric Haag, and Randy Siltzer for all their hard work
in Jackson setting up the silent auction items when I fell ill. Great job guys! You are the reason
the auction was such a success. We raised over $3,500 for Pathways in Jackson. Now that I am
Past President of WAHPERD, I have turned my attention to find new board members for the
2013 and 2014 school year. The 2013 WAHPERD convention in Douglas is just around the
corner. November will be here before you know it and as of this moment I only have two
volunteers for the board, one for Vice President-elect of Physical Education and one for Vice
President-elect of Recreation. We need YOU to step and run for President-elect and the
remainder of the vice president positions.
This is a great opportunity to serve WAPHERD and grow professionally. The year I was
president was one of the most fulfilling years in my career as a physical education professional.
I have made many new friends from all over the country. I was able to attend two national
AAHPERD conventions that would have been difficult without being president of WAHPERD.
If you are interested in serving on the WAHPERD board contact me at
[email protected]. This is someone’s opportunity to take that next step in their
professional growth. IS IT YOU?
