“Cowboys and Cowgirls Celebrating Success”

The theme for our convention this year, “Cowboys and Cowgirls Celebrating Success,” spawned from the National Conference “Gateway to Success.” My goal for the WAHPERD convention is to allow professionals from around the state and surrounding areas to come and celebrate their successes. I think too often we just push forward; sometimes it is nice to stop and celebrate the moment. So… that is exactly what we are going to do this year! This convention will encompass all areas of WAHPERD so everyone will leave Laramie with a “boot” full of ideas to use right away. We will be utilizing various venues at the University of Wyoming, as well as having multiple faculty members present, so attendees will get an up-close and personal look into our university. Also, the high school football championships will begin on November 14th so football fans should plan to stay and enjoy the games!

The convention hotel will be the Laramie Holiday Inn; rates are $83/night. The Laramie Holiday Inn is located only a short walk from the convention site, Corbett Building, Division of Kinesiology and Health, University of Wyoming. To reserve your room please call 307-721-9000; be sure to mention WAHPERD so you get the special rate.

Hope to see you all in Laramie!Sincerely,

Nathan VondraWAHPERD President

Cowboys and Cowgirls Celebrating Success

Dear Prospective Donor,

November 12th-14th, 2014, members of the Wyoming Association for Health, Physical Education, Recreation, and Dance (WAHPERD) will be gathering in Laramie for their annual convention.  President, Nathan Vondra, his convention manager, and committee chairs have been busy planning for a topnotch line of presenters and exhibitors.

As always, we are seeking financial support to assist us with bringing in speakers and covering their expenses.  Anytime that it is necessary to fly into a Wyoming airport, costs skyrocket.  Donations will also be used to cover the costs of healthy snacks during convention breaks, sponsoring one of the luncheons during the convention, and sponsoring our awards banquet. Any donated amount will be greatly appreciated! Also, if you would like to be an exhibitor for any of the Health and Safety Unit programs, we would like to discuss the possibility with you. This is a chance for you to share with health, physical education, and other health professionals your products for free!

Please give this request your thoughtful consideration.  Our goal is to promote health and wellness for all of Wyoming, most importantly the students we teach.  As professionals we are committed to doing whatever it takes to have exemplary programs for our students. We also realize that employers need healthy and fit employees in order for their organization to flourish and prosper.

Sincerely,

Nathan VondraWyoming AHPERD [email protected] 307-262-0422- - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - -

Message from WAHPERD President Elect, Cedric Philo

WAHPERD, this is president-elect Cedric Philo. I am an elementary Health and Physical Education Teacher at Northpark Elementary School in Rock Springs. I am currently helping President Vondra put together a schedule of fabulous presenters for the 2014 fall conference in Laramie. I have also met with the superintendent for Sweetwater School District #1 to get the 2015 convention here in Rock Springs. We are getting ready to head to St. Louis for AAHPERD. I hope to see as many of you as I can there for some networking and your thoughts and ideas.

Hi there everybody!

I hope all is well around the state. The snow is melting so I am happy!

As I look back at the 2013-2014 school year, I realize I have once again had the best year yet. I also think it was the busiest year as well; I bet I am not the only one who feels that way.

I started off this year knowing I have the opportunity to be a leader for my state and I have taken that with me in every hurdle/obstacle/opportunity I have met. I was asked to be a part of the leadership team at my school and head of the Safe and Healthy Committee as well. Like everyone else out there we have so many different roles we fill; I am really working this year to make my professional roles meld together. The school’s Safe and Healthy Committee has helped me adopt Let’s Move Active School, as well as

Let’s Move Wyoming. We are going to host a Fitness Night and Diabetes Walk to celebrate Let’s Move Wyoming; I think it will turn out to be a great event.

The University of Wyoming’s Dr. Jayne Jenkins, 2014 WAHPERD Convention manager, the WAHPERD board, and I have been working hard on our next Wyoming AHPERD Convention, which will be held in Laramie on November 12th-14th. The theme for the conference is Cowboys and Cowgirls Celebrating Success. John Thomas from US Games has agreed to come and show easy ways to get learners of all ages active. Colorado AHPERD’s President and President-elect are planning on coming to present as well. I am also in the works with Amy Shipp on a Let’s Move Active Schools Training. Sessions and socials with University of Wyoming Coaches are also in the works for all attendees! All is well from here!

I hope to see you all in Laramie,Nathan Vondra

Cheyenne, WY and around the Cowboy State – As part of National Physical Fitness and Sports Month, the Wyoming Association for Health, Physical Education, Recreation and Dance (WAHPERD) and the Wyoming Governor’s Council on Physical Fitness and Sport is kicking off National Physical Education and Sport Week May 1-9, “Let’s Move Wyoming” encouraging parents and teachers to help children explore a wide variety of physical activities to determine what they like and encourage them to participate in those activities on a regular basis. The physical activity-inspired week begins the physical fitness and sports inspired month.

This year, the theme for the week (May 1-9, 2014) is "Let's Move! Active Schools," the First Lady's unprecedented collaboration to bring physical activity back in American schools. "Research shows that quality physical education programs can contribute to students' regular participation in physical activity and can increase moderate to vigorous physical activity. The challenge is to help students identify a sport or activity that he or she enjoys as much as watching television or playing computer games," says the American Alliance for Health, Physical Education, Health, Recreation and Dance (AAHPERD) President Gale Wiedow of Dakota State University in Madison, SD. "Our goal is to urge every school in the country to coordinate a physical activity event during National Physical Education and Sport Week which will help motivate students to jump start or stimulate their personal physical activity routine."

Let’s MOVE Wyoming is supported by the Wyoming Association for Health, Physical Education, Recreation, and Dance (WAHPERD); The Wyoming Governor’s Council on Physical Fitness and Sport, Cowboy State Fitness Equipment; Western Dairy Association; Educational Edge Disc Golf; Wyoming Department of Health; the University of Wyoming, Division of Kinesiology & Health and Student Major’s Club; as well as AAHPERD and NASPE.

During this special week, students of all ages will have an opportunity to participate in a wide-variety of physical activities created specifically for each age group. Physical activities in last year’s “Let’s Move” initiative included:• Laramie County School District had all 3rd grades from EACH elementary school in Cheyenne

participate in an all-district Health and Wellness Day sponsored by the Wyoming Governor’s Council on Fitness and Sport

• Sheridan County #2 had 3259 students with each student contributing a mile of walking to move from Portland Maine to San Diego California walking together across the country

• Monroe Intermediate School in Green River had the entire school take a ZUMBA break• Wilson Elementary in Teton County School District all moved together down Fish Creek Road by

walking, rollerblading, jogging, biking or scootering.• Cedric Philo at Northpark in Rock Springs had the entire school doing the “sid shuffle” from Ice Age.

Over 100 schools are making their mark for Let’s MOVE Wyoming!

Tammy Till, co-chair of the Wyoming Governor’s Council on Physical Fitness and Sport, says . . . Being physically active is one way of keeping the body healthy.  Begin creative ways to have children experience physical fitness may help them become and stay active.  Having organized sports is great, but they do not have to be involved in a team sport or attend classes to be active.  Just letting them

'play' in a fun setting is also important.  That is what Health and Fitness Day is all about, to Make Fitness Fun!”

Although 38 states mandate physical education in elementary, middle/high, and high school, most do not require a specific amount of instructional time and more than half allow exemptions, waivers or substitutions, according to the 2012 Shape of the Nation Report. We're utilizing this nationwide occasion to raise awareness and emphasize the value of physical education in schools and its importance in fostering physically active students with healthy life-long habits," says Nancy Raso Eklund, School District 2 in Green River and Executive Director of WAHPERD.

The Institute of Medicine writes: “Many children and adolescents in the United States have grown accustomed to a sedentary lifestyle. Only about half of youth meet the current Physical Activity Guidelines for Americans’ recommendation of at least 60 minutes of daily vigorous to moderate-intensity physical activity. This increases youths’ health risks and can jeopardize their well-being throughout their lives. Physical activity is also critical to children’s cognitive development and academic success. The school environment is key in encouraging and providing opportunities for children and adolescents to be active.” A new IOM report examines the status of physical activity and physical education efforts in schools, how physical activity and fitness affect health outcomes, what can be done to help schools get students to become more active in the school environment. The IOM video, Educating the Student Body: Taking Physical Activity and Physical Education to School can be viewed here: http://www.youtube.com/watch?feature=player_embedded&v=rasZGZpQsy0

School-age youths should participate daily in 60 minutes or more of moderate to vigorous physical activity that is developmentally appropriate, enjoyable, and involves a variety of activities. All elementary school students should participate in at least 150 minutes per week of physical education, and all middle and high school students should participate in at least 225 minutes of physical education, for the entire school year.

Whether it's starting to look like spring or another six weeks of winter where you are, you can stay connected to Let's Move! Active Schools (LMAS) and keep your students moving throughout the year!

IN THIS ISSUE• Resource Spotlight: Partner with PAL!• PA Tip for February: Integrating Physical Activity in the Classroom• NBA Partnership• In the News: New Physical Education Policy Adopted in Chicago• Words of Wisdom: Advice from LMAS Champions• Apply for Recognition Acknowledgments

Resource Spotlight: Partner with PAL! Build Physical Activity Leaders in Your SchoolThe Physical Activity Leader (PAL) Learning System, a professional development resource within LMAS, is now offering group trainings that are available for scheduling.

The 12-month PAL Learning System is a dynamic, action-focused initiative that prepares and motivates individuals to create action plans tailored to their respective school settings. Beginning with a seven-hour in-person PAL training, the educational system is complemented by a resource-rich online learning community where PALs can continue the conversation and receive support, even after completing training.

The PAL Learning System is available at no cost to participants; each training can accommodate between 30 and 50 people. School leaders across the country are encouraged to take advantage of this fabulous opportunity to offer these skill building leadership workshops for their Let's Move! PA Tip for February: Integrating Physical Activity in the ClassroomThere are many opportunities for the classroom teacher to incorporate daily physical activity into an existing schedule. Providing short, simple physical activity breaks that require little or no equipment, make cross-curricular connections, and can be done in a small classroom area can benefit students in many ways:Try It: * Language Locomotion! (Language Arts): Teacher reads a short story to the class and identifies each

verb or "action" word contained in the short story. Students act out each verb in place for 10-15 seconds.

Page 10: Wyoming Association - wyomingahperd.comwyomingahperd.com/uploads/3/0/7/9/3079912/...2014.docx  · Web viewShane Tweeter, Laramie. VP Physical ... Keynote Speaker(s): ... Teacher

10

* Mental Math in Action! (Math): Teacher calls out an addition, subtraction, multiplication, and/or division problem. Student must mentally solve problem and perform the corresponding number of specified movements. To add more motion, students can jog in place while waiting for the next question.

* Movement Ideas:- Bicep curls with math book- Knee lifts- Elbow to knee (raise right knee to left elbow, then raise left knee to right elbow)- Marching in place- Squats- Sports activities (tennis shots, football passes, volleyball spikes)- Variation: Incorporate integers, word problems, fractions, and ratios

NBA PartnershipBE ACTIVE, EAT HEALTHY and PLAY TOGETHER - Partner with the NBA family through NBA/WNBA FIT! The National Basketball Association (NBA) has partnered with Let's Move! Schools will need to sign in and join the NBA promotion on your school's "My Portal Page." Schools that are currently enrolled in the Let's Move! Active Schools program are still eligible to receive the NBA prizes.

In the News: Rewriting the Rules: New Physical Education Policy Adopted in ChicagoIn a unanimous decision by the Chicago Board of Education, new guidelines were adopted for physical education in Chicago Public Schools. Among the provisions contained in the new policy http://r20.rs6.net/tn.jsp?e=001sqdrbw1KwbJj_v38PbDU7iE3zPltG_37lehwgWkku25-mZf5aZH9DDSLu8_qtcLflKoyiCE8j49s822ns1yOumtHeg84PRjQhf0QoZvt8S8eUlNSir-XmQ7MXRiuOT4CQWQhjkXj7yeHP_KBF2VafbIbjA_F33W9klPaJEp0shvEoaYdjTqCUPBlm72bJf2c6hgIfa-Nwr4jo1KRl2ZqZJct-IiT0c85iLOi3rx73nU2v81B7MbbbIGkJcI8qiHKNBq905QLTjVeVsZ_ShR92BQyRbf2gDKyGmhH_jtLjfQ566-ZGJ54RejrVht_1PTk are increased standards for physical education and activity in schools; changes will be made across the district over the next three years. Additionally, the board voted not to seek renewal of the waivers that exempt 11th and 12th graders from state-level physical education requirements. Advocacy efforts from coalitions including parents and educators were all part of the movement that led to the adoption of these new standards. We look forward to this policy's implementation and hope it catalyzes further efforts to promote active schools in Chicago!

Words of Wisdom: Advice from LMAS ChampionsA Champion is an active member of a school community (teacher, administrator, nurse, para-professional, parent, counselor, or staff member) who is interested in creating a healthier school environment and leads the effort at his/her school. Our Words of Wisdom: Advice from LMAS Champions will highlight a Champion in LMAS monthly. Rise to the occasion! The LMAS framework provides a clear, consistent path to equip PE and health champions with the tools needed to become physical activity leaders for our schools each and every day. In my educational career, I have witnessed librarians becoming media specialists for the simple reason that schools needed them beyond the four walls of the library. LMAS is here to evolve and equip the PE profession beyond the four walls of the gym because our schools need us, and a healthier generation depends on our actions!

- Jamie Sparks, Kentucky Department of Education, Coordinated School Health Director

RESTON, VA, December 5, 2013 -- A managing partner of First Lady Michelle Obama’s Let’s Move! Active Schools initiative, the American Alliance for Health, Physical Education, Recreation and Dance (AAHPERD) today announced that its membership has approved changing the association’s name to the Society of Health and Physical Educators, doing business as SHAPE America.

According to President Gale Wiedow, interim dean of the College of Education at Dakota State University in Madison, SD, “we are now poised to move forward in creating a new chapter in our 128-year-old history with our new name, vision and mission. A new logo, tagline and brand for the organization, as well as a new website, will be introduced early in 2014.”

Through our new name we are working to:• Shape a future where healthy is the norm• Shape a standard of excellence in physical education and health education• Shape the lifelong habits of young people• Shape and influence policy related to physical education and school health education

SHAPE America is the organization’s seventh name change since its founding in 1885 as the Association for the Advancement of Physical Education. The largest organization of physical educators in the country with close to 20,000 members, SHAPE America created the first ever National Standards for K-12 Physical Education, developed the Let’s Move in School public awareness campaign to increase physical activity before, during and after school, and originated the Shape of the Nation Report, which reviews the status of physical education across the United States, among its many professional firsts.

Earlier this year the organization voted unanimously to unify what were five national associations and a Research Consortium under the AAHPERD umbrella. Among its many partners, SHAPE America works with the Alliance for a Healthier Generation, American Heart Association, The Cooper Institute, First Lady Michelle Obama’s Let’s Move! initiative and the President’s Council on Fitness, Sports & Nutrition.

Wiedow added, “having an acronym that actually says and means something helps to make our new name more memorable. In addition, the verb shape means influence and communicates leadership and power. We want SHAPE America to have increased visibility and recognition among our primary audiences of physical and health educators as well as our secondary audiences ─ parents, principals, school administrators, policy makers, and the media. I am confident that our strong, memorable and simple new name will help us do just that.”

The Society of Health and Physical Educators, doing business as SHAPE America, is headquartered in Reston, VA, 25 miles west of Washington, D.C. Its vision is "Healthy People – Physically Educated and Physically Active!" SHAPE America is the largest organization of professionals involved in physical education, physical activity, dance, school health and sport--all specialties related to achieving an active, healthy lifestyle. Its mission is to advance professional practice and promote research related to health and physical education, physical activity, dance and sport by providing its members with a comprehensive and coordinated array of resources, support and programs to help practitioners improve

“Cowboys and Cowgirls Celebrating Success”

The theme for our convention this year, “Cowboys and Cowgirls Celebrating Success,” spawned from the National Conference “Gateway to Success.” My goal for the convention is to allow professionals from around the state and surrounding areas to come and celebrate their successes. I think too often we just push forward; sometimes it is nice to stop and celebrate the moment. So… that is exactly what we are going to do this year! This convention will encompass all areas of WAHPERD so everyone will leave Laramie with a “boot” full of ideas to use right away. Please contribute to WAHPERD by helping put together an exceptional convention in Laramie in November 2014.
