Milestone 1: Initial Research
And DevelopmentGoals: Discover what skills are
necessary to design and build a
quadcopter.
Before organization was founded, none
of the founders had any significant
amount of knowledge related to
robotics, drone technology, vehicle
design, flighty software design, etc
Primary Question
: Is it feasible for us to
build an iPhone controlled drone with
the resources we have?

Milestone 1: Initial Research
And Development, ContdInitial Research proves
positive for the possibility
of success for project.
Use initial Research data
to design X1 Version
Drone, which is presentedin a separate R&D
presentation.

MileStone 2: X1 Organization
and Mission StatementMission Statement:To develop
real world engineering and
problem solving skills through
the applications of Robotics.
Long Term Goals:Build an
organization within the UCLA
Undergraduate Engineering
community that will continue topositively impact the experience
of new undergraduates after the
founders of X1 have graduated.

Milestone 2: Hardware
ResearchExpected completion date:5th/6th
week, Winter Quarter
Goals:Research vital hardware
components of vehicle, and how
there specifications affect overall
performance, power consumption,
stability etc
Findings: Most hardware vendors
for quadcopter/drone parts dont
design hardware for individual use,
and specifications are inconsistent.

Current Hardware
ChallengesMost Hardware will be purchased
through RC Hobby Shops, or
through online Hobby stores.
Most in person or online stores do
not have well made documented
specifications of parts.
Ex: The same motor on differentonline websites will have different
weights, different Thrust values
and propeller recommendations.

Current Hardware Solutions
In House Verification and Testing:
Because of inconsistent documentation
of hardware, in house testing of all parts
with be conducted by X1.
Comparison research and trade studies
will be done between multiple hardware
sources, which will be narrowed down to
a few options for each hardware element.
Those elements will then be purchased
and tested to determine specifications.
Once all hardware testing and verification
is complete, project will to milestone 3.

Milestone 3: Dynamic
Modeling and SimulationGoals:Use information from hardware
research to create dynamic models in
Matlab and Simulink to approximate
what will eventually become the GNC
systems for the Quadcopter.
Build initial concept tests on Arduino
and Raspberry pi using signals from
iPhone to demonstrate iPhone
controller capability.
Along with Matlab models, start
designing initial PID controller in
Arduino IDE with IMU and LED lights.

Milestone 4: Integration and
TestingGoals:Begin to put all the
pieces together one at a time.
Design requirements andprocedures for testing and
integration, along with
document standards and
repeatability assurance.
Dive into testing and integration,
find problems and engineer
solutions.
