HOLY APOSTLES CATHOLIC CHURCH, PIMLICOwas built in the mid19th century when the area was developed byThomas Cubitt. The first Catholic church in Pimlico was inClaverton Street, a former Methodist chapel which was convertedinto a Catholic church and dedicated to the Holy Apostles in1917. This was not a parish church but a chapel-of-ease servedby the priests of Westminster Cathedral.

The old Holy Apostles’ church was hit by bombs on 16 April 1941and had its roof destroyed, making the church unusable.Catholics of Pimlico were deprived of a permanent church of theirown for 16 years. The Ambulance Station in Dolphin Square, wasused for Mass.

After the war the site of the old church was requisitioned to buildthe Churchill Gardens Estate. The future looked uncertain. Fr.Hadfield had ministered to the local Catholics throughout the 2ndWorld War. The authorities refused to release land for a newchurch, so Fr. Hadfield cycled around the parish at night plantingMiraculous Medals on bombsites. Finally, the site on Winchester

and CumberlandStreets becameavailable. Fr.Hadfield was theson of an architectand used hisfather’s Sheffieldfirm to build thenew presbyteryand church. Thenew church wasformally openedby CardinalGodfrey on 1December 1957.

Canon Hadfield,as he laterbecame, remainedparish priest ofPimlico until hisdeath in 1982.There has been a

succession of curates, sisters, deacons and seminarians whohave given loyal service to the Catholics of Pimlico over the bestpart of a century.

In terms of building the church and running the parish organisa-tions, so much has been done by the parishioners themselves. With a high proportion of Irish residents, Pimlico has always beena Catholic area. Parish life and devotions have reflected thetimes and today the rich traditions we have received are supple-mented by a more cosmopolitan congregation.

In these recessionary times many people are experiencing the effect of ever rising costs. One firm to benefit from this isUptown Reservations. For the past 24 years Uptown has been accommodating visitors to London in private homes in thecentral areas, roughly Zone 1 on the Underground system. It’s a good time to offer Bed and Breakfast accommodation.Besides tax advantages, the 2012 Olympics games will produce a huge surge in demand for accommodation in the centreof town. And it is to be hoped that the site will continue to attract visitor long after the games have finished.Recent additions to Uptown’s property portfolio have included an apartment in Warwick Square, Pimlico and Ebury Street;Smith Street, Chelsea. Do you have a spare room with bathroom, and enjoy meeting interesting people, then find out moreby calling Monica Barrington at Uptown Reservations on 020 7937 2001.

Happy Holidays

CHRISTMAS IN DENMARKis celebrated on December 24, or Juleaften. The evening familymeal is either roast pork, roast duck or roast goose and eaten withpotatoes, gravy, and red cabbage or finely chopped kale boiled inbutter. Dessert is rice pudding served with whipped cream and blackcherry sauce. It also has chopped peeled almonds, and a singlewhole peeled almond. Whoever finds the whole almond will havegood luck for the coming year, and the lucky finder is entitled to asmall gift. The family gathers around the Christmas tree and singsChristmas songs while holding hands and dancing in circles, and

may even tour thehouse, still hold-ing hands andsinging. Somefamilies selectone child to handout the presents. All children taketurns handing outpresents in othertraditions.Alternatively,

Father Christmas, the Julemanden, appears at the door in full cos-tume with a sack of presents. He will then distribute the presents, with the assistance of any children present, and is offered a drink. The presents are opened and followed by more snacks, candy, chipsand, sometimes, a traditional Christmas drink called Gløgg.The Danish are somewhat famous for their Julefrokost, literallymeaning "Christmas lunch", which includes various traditional Danishdishes, potentially accompanied by beer and Snaps. They are popular and held within families, as well as by companies and othersocial groups. The family Julefrokoster however is usually heldbetween Juleaften and New Year's Eve.

CHRISTMAS IN FINLAND.The Christmas starts in late November. Christmas decorations andsongs are prominent and chil-dren count days to Christmaswith Advent calendars. Schoolshave the day before ChristmasEve (aatonaatto) as a holiday. On Christmas Eve (jouluaatto),shops close early. ChristmasDay (joulupäivä) is on the 25and the following day(Tapaninpäivä, "St. Stephen'sDay") are public holidays. The Declaration of ChristmasPeace has been a tradition inFinland from the Middle Agesevery year, except in 1939 due to the Winter War. It is a custom inmany towns and cities. The most famous one is on the Old GreatSquare of Turku. It is traditional to bring candles to the graves ofloved ones on Christmas Eve and All Saints Day.

Finnish people clean their homes before Christmas and prepare spe-cial treats for the festive season. A sheaf of grain, nuts and seeds aretied on a pole, which is placed in the garden for birds. Spruce treesare cut or bought from a market and taken home to be decoratedusing apples and other fruit, candies, paper flags, cotton and tinsel. Astar symbolizing the Star of Bethlehem is placed at the top of thetree. People usually take a traditional sauna on Christmas Eve.Afterwards, they dress up in clean clothes for the Christmas dinner orjoulupöytä. The most traditional Christmas dish is Christmas Ham,roast suckling pig or a roasted fresh ham. Many kinds of casserolesare also popular. Other Christmas dishes include boiled codfishserved snowy white and fluffy, pickled herring and vegetables. Prunejam pastries, plum or mixed fruit soup, rice porridge with cinnamon, sugar and cold milk, and sweets like chocolate are popular desserts.Christmas gifts are exchanged after Christmas Eve dinner. Childrendo not hang up stockings but Joulupukki visits the household, maybewith a tonttu to help him distribute the presents. Christmas Day services begin at 6 am

CHRISTMAS IN SWEDENCelebrations begin with the first of Advent. Saint Lucy's Day(Luciadagen) which is the first major Christmas celebration beforeChristmas itself. Electric candles and glowing stars are placed inalmost every window in December. December 25 (juldagen) is a pub-lic holiday, December 24 is when Santa Clause Jultomte brings thepresents. The Jultomte was originally a small invisible Christmashouse gnome or dwarf from the Nordic mythology. An old superstitionstill calls for feeding the Tomte on Christmas Eve with a small bowl ofporridge withoutwhich bad luckis brought toeveryone in thehouse the nextyear. The mod-ern "Tomten", isa version ofSanta Claus inred cloth andwhite beard, and knocks onthe door and asks "finns det några snälla barn här?" ("are there anynice children here?")Christmas is celebrated with food on 24 December with a Christmastable called Christmas smörgåsbord (julbord), a display of severalChristmas food items. Julbord has Christmas ham, (julskinka) accom-panied by small meatballs, pickled herring, spareribs, small hot dogs, lutfisk, pork sausage, salmon, Janssons frestelse (potato casserolewith anchovy), and rice pudding. The Christmas julbord is served withjulmust and beverage like mulled wine, Christmas beer or snaps. AScandinavian speciality is the glögg (mulled and spiced wine withalmonds and raisins), which is served hot in small cups. After the jul-bord on December 24, the presents are distributed, either by Jultomtenor a family member, and usually from a sack or from under theChristmas tree where they have been lying all day or for several days.
