ORGANIZING INSTITUTIONS
A. - Societat Històrico Arqueològica Martí i Bella, (SHAMB)
The Marti i Bella Archaeological Historical Society is a non profit making civil entity; created in
1997 within the Cercle Artístic de Ciutadella. Since its creation SHAMB has developed its activities
around four fields:
1. - The diffusion and study of the History of Menorca, through the organization of Days of
Historical Investigation that is now in its sixteenth year.
2. - The protection and safeguard of the historical heritage of Menorca, through multiple actions
that involve the public administration, with projects and petitions for the declaration of Assets of
Cultural Interest (BIC) such as the surroundings of Punta Nati, the protection of the remnants of
the XVII century, the Sant Francesc convent in Ciutadella, the contents of the modernist Llabrés
pharmacy, and the restoration of the most important bulwarks of the city walls at Ciutadella.
Along with these, other initiatives include the proposal for the acquisition of the Muslim Fortress
at Santa Agueda as a public asset, the creation of a research centre and the Museum of
Underwater Archaeology of the Balearic Islands, and the proposed creation of a Municipal
Heritage Commission for the defence of the architectural, ethnological, and landscape heritage,
amongst others.
3.- GIBET Project (Grup d’Intervenció sobre Béns Etnològics): The creation in 2009, of a team of
volunteers dedicated to the recovery and restoration of cultural and other structures, including
the Civil Cemetery of Ciutadella, some dry stone rural shelters, next to the southern bypass, and
the romantic gardens at Sa Vinyeta
4. - The publication of the proceedings of the Historical Research Days, the organisation of
historical dissemination conferences and the participation in various national and international
forums dedicated to the historical Heritage complete the activity of the first twenty years of the
existence of the Martí I Bella Archaeological Historical Society (SHAMB).
Within the framework of these efforts in defence of research and scientific knowledge the
Societat Històrico Arqueològica Martí i Bella, tries to involve the public in these cultural
objectives, organising from October 26th
to 28th
2018, the 16th
International Congress about Dry
Stone, an event instituted and perpetuated by the Société Scientifique Internationale pour l’Ètude Pluridisciplinaire de la Pierre Sèche (S.P.S.).
9
B.- La Société Scientifique Internationale pour l’Ètude Pluridisciplinaire de la Pierre Sèche (S.P.S.)
This Society brings together artisans, amateurs and institutions that work for the study,
protection and conservation of dry stone structures. The first International Congress on the
subject was held in Bari (Italy) in 1988. These meetings, initially informal, have gradually become
the expressions of a common will that materialised with the official creation of the SPS in 1998.
The objective of the society is to maintain these congresses and follow the progress of the
research, the rehabilitation and the innovation related to dry stone. It analyses the various topics
and contributes its opinion to the relevance of the methods, uses and the objectives pursued by
the various parties involved. With their interventions, they maintain the link between the various
international collaborators and ensure the continuity of meetings and exchanges. Since 1998,
International Congresses have been held regularly every two years.
