WISFF JURY PROCESS“The films we honor are selected by juries who place a premium on story and emotional impact, based on their decades of experience and devotion to the cinematic art form. No audience at our festival has ever gone away without being truly moved, a powerful testament to the meaning and relevance of film,” – WISFF Director, Monika Moreno-Lapp

WISFF celebrates stories that engage the heart, stories that are compelling with artistic integrity. Stories

that evoke laughter or tears, and move the audience. We look for characters that have depth, and along

their journey, have something to say.

“it takes a festival like Windrider to make a filmmaker realize they have a choice in the stories they tell and that their work is not in a vacuum, that it can and will have a powerful effect on focusing our collective narrative, giving people the best reason to go to the movies, to simply be reminded of what matters.”– Oscar Bucher, Director/Editor of award winning film, WAITING FOR A TRAIN

“Another reason why the festival is so special is they promote stories about the triumph of the human spirit... all the films explore issues that transcend race, culture and politics. Such films leave the audience transformed for the better and creates an extremely satisfying cinematic experience.” – John Arlotto, Filmmaker/Editor of the award winning film, DEFACE

“The festival itself is hands down one of the most important to apply to as a student filmmaker, and the single most important one that I sent my film to, not only for the awards it offers, but for the enduring support.. It was after screening THE REPLACEMENT CHILD at Angelus that I met two producers who were taken with my work enough to produce and finance my first feature GIRLFRIEND. The deal for GIRLFRIEND was solidified during WINDRIDER at Sundance. Long after the festival is over, (the festival’s) support and ability to garner attention from the film industry has been one of the single most important factors in my success thus far.”

THE WISFF BR AND

With the reemergence of the Angelus brand as the WINDRIDER INTERNATIONAL STUDENT FILM FESTIVAL,

WISFF has now become a well respected, highly visible BRAND in its own right, particularly among its

primary demographic, college-level, undergraduate and graduate film school students, ages 19-35.

WINDRIDER will also prove to be a highly visible brand on college campuses worldwide, with influencers

identified handily through the vast Angelus network. This desired niche market is comprised of college

film, television, journalism & new media filmmakers, film schools, film professors, media department

heads, academia as well as general entertainment consumers. With a flourishing online presence

emphasizing social media among 19-35 year olds, the Windrider market has a vast global outreach.

WISFF is uniquely set apart from the competition by its vision characteristics, artistic integrity, award

prize money and significant market share. In 2015, WISFF will continue to find new ways to engage

with audiences worldwide, furthering WISFF’s vision of celebrating independent voices among student

filmmakers whose work reflects the human condition with creativity and respect.

WISFF has created a 24/7 social networking community of successful emerging filmmakers from around

the globe. Local events and outreach opportunities will occur year round. Messaging opportunities from

carefully cultivated digital campaigns designed to reach influencers and beyond will be disseminated

regularly. At the core of this strategy is Windrider’s desire and ability to encourage and influence future

cinematic achievements to reflect our universal themes and satisfy a wider audience.

WINDRIDER INSTITUTE“We believe independent filmmakers are among the poets and sages of our time …”

The Windrider Institute endeavors to intersect with a conversation already taking place in our culture

— one with which audiences can engage, and thereby enliven. The Institute was founded in 2004 as a

collaborative effort among The Priddy Brothers, Will Stoller-Lee and Craig Detweiler and has expanded

to include many other partners. The Windrider Institute, Inc. was established as a vehicle to promote the

presentation and exploration of the human story through film and visual media.

Windrider, a 501(c)(3) non-profit based in Boise, Idaho, is founded on the belief that stories are truly the

“storehouses” of culture, and that visual media, our culture’s principal form of storytelling, is the most

critical, value-defining medium of our age. Windrider focuses on stories because they are the most

powerful means of shaping what social scientists describe as the social imaginary. Stories are tied to our

intrinsic need for meaning. Stories engage the whole person and create receptiveness in the listener in

ways facts and arguments do not.

Our goal is to create live and virtual community spaces across the globe that allow people to thoughtfully

explore the centrality of story in how we make and understand meaning in the world. To that end,

Windrider serves as a leadership forum, international student film festival, content provider, producer,

laboratory, classroom, and resource provider to inspire people to create, view, and discuss visual media

that address life’s ultimate questions.

The Institute focuses on the following initiatives:

The Windrider Forum was launched in 2005

and has since grown to become a one of a kind

immersive educational experience that takes place

during the Sundance Film Festival. It has the power

to convene and has valued relationships with

influential filmmakers and festivals. The Windrider

Forum targets storytelling cultural creatives,

highlighting the power of stories, particularly

among influential young opinion leaders. This

project seeks to celebrate this community

and encourage their open stance toward the

complexity of reality.

Our vision was launched when co-founders John

and Ed Priddy were joined by Will Stoller-Lee

from Fuller Theological Seminary and filmmaker/

author/educator Dr. Craig Detweiler, to explore possibilities of an immersive educational experience at

the Sundance Film Festival. From our modest vision in 2005, the Windrider Forum has grown to become

the largest ticket-purchasing block of students at the Sundance Film Festival each year. Students and

filmmakers alike report each year that the experience is the location of some of the most engaging

conversations on faith, film, and culture, anywhere in the industry. We host 150 students, staff and faculty

from 12 educational programs including; Fuller Theological Seminary, Dallas Theological Seminary, Taylor

University, Ouachita Baptist University, Los Angeles Film Studies Center, Pacific Union College, Vanguard

University, Asbury University, Pt Loma University, Northwest Nazarene University and BYU.

17

The “curriculum” each year is the 125+ films that are selected by the Sundance programmers, with each

of our participating universities overseeing its own academic credit and course delivery. These ideas are

then disseminated to a global audience by leveraging existing key partners whose reach is in the millions

of viewers for the purpose of transcending boundaries of ethnicity, class, and circumstances. Our goal

is to capture the imagination of viewers worldwide with new spiritual insights through this extraordinary

partnership of leading international organizations.

Through the years, we have been privileged to meet hundreds of creative, inspiring filmmakers. Many of

them have become dear friends, and their films have enriched us at festivals around the world. These

young filmmakers are truly the poets and sages of our time, taking audiences on journeys of the heart,

soul and mind — and we celebrate their amazing gifts and talents.

“Here students learned to look to the hunger, the hurt, and the cries for justice, mercy and hope embedded within these independent and documentary films, and unpack the deeper meanings that inform and inspire them as redemptive storytellers.” – Dr. Craig Detweiler, co-founder Windrider Forum, filmmaker, author and director of Pepperdine

University’s Center for Entertainment, Media and Culture.

Through the global reach of the WINDRIDER INSTITUTE, the Windrider Film Forum serves as a laboratory,

classroom and resource provider for filmmakers and those that understand the power of story to change

lives and culture.

“We love the guys from Windrider. [They] showed a lot of support for ‘Sympathy for Delicious’ at Sundance, so I thought it would be nice to return their support by screening our film out in the Bay Area.”— Mark Ruffalo, Director/Actor, Sympathy for Delicious

“I have had no bigger fans and no better time with this movie than I have had with the folks at the Windrider Film Forum.”— John Hindman, Director/Writer, The Answer Man

“Screening our film at Windrider was unlike any other festival experience we’ve had. I think we’ve felt more appreciated as artists here than we have at any other festival in the country. We were able to screen for an audience that is eager to discuss, analyze, appreciate, and argue about something we created. That’s every filmmakers’ dream.”— Destin Daniel Cretton, Director/Writer, Sundance Award winner

“The Windrider Forum is one of those events that has an unbeatable formula that you wish for as a filmmaker. The magic recipe that Windrider has down to a science goes something like this: excited, smart, appreciative audiences + a staff that oozes love and hospitality + the best of the best short films from new talent + awesome locations that invigorate your spirit + the undeniably positive energy and learning achieved when you put the best up-and-coming filmmakers in the same room together + a community that respects and encourages filmmaking that can change the world = an event you don’t want to miss.”— Anna Christopher, Director/Writer, Queen of Cactus Cove
