Y UR DONOR Impact Report
ANNUAL REPORT 2013
No one IS IMMUNE FROM
ILLNESS AND NO ONE IS IMMUNE FROM
HUNGER. NOWHERE IS THAT MORE
EVIDENT THAN IN WASHINGTON, DC,
MARYLAND AND VIRGINIA.
One of the many sad truths about illness is that when
it becomes a reality, nutritious food is often over-
looked or out of reach — usually because medicine
and medical treatment take priority. The goal of Food
& Friends isn’t to cure illnesses, but to deliver the
nourishment needed for the battle.
You make our mission possible by helping us provide access to nutritious meals, combat food insecurity, educate the community on healthy living and build a compassionate community of support.
We thank you for the investment you make, and the trust you have in our work that helps us feed more and more of our sick neighbors every day. Because of
you, thousands of families, children and seniors have
one less worry today because they have healthy meals
on their table.

Our service isn’t just about the quantity and quality of food;
it’s also about access. For far too many people in our region, healthy food isn’t
just expensive — it’s out of reach, with neighborhoods desolate of healthy food
options. Our home-delivered meals offer our clients, many of whom are
homebound, the kinds of food that play an important role in healing and
managing illness.
THE FACTS DC residents live in food deserts, a place where residents do not have
easy access to fresh fruits, vegetables or other healthy food options
of DC households struggle with hunger
of Maryland households with children struggle to obtain enough food to
provide regular, healthy meals for their family
of Virginia residents are food insecure

our critically-ill neighbors with the nutrition needed to fight illness. Our
Freshly-Prepared Meals and Groceries-to-Go programs deliver food critical to
a well-rounded diet and essential for good health. In 2013, we home-delivered more meals and served more people than ever before.
Food for our neighbors means more than a simple bag of groceries or a warm meal. It
means children are nourished as one of their parents battles cancer. It means seniors
won’t have to choose between food and medicine. It means struggling partners can
take care of a loved one while remaining healthy and productive. And it means that
parents are free from worry as they put healthy meals on the tables for their families.
THE FACTS of Food & Friends clients live at or below the poverty level

and food pantries if they did not receive our services

In 2010, Denise was diagnosed with a
rare blood disorder that required harsh chemotherapy.
With four children and a lack of income due to job loss,
food was a major hurdle in her life. Denise’s 17-year-old
daughter had to step in and take care of the household’s
meal planning, grocery shopping and cooking. Once De-
nise started receiving our meal deliveries, a heavy bur-
den was lifted from her and her family. “Without Food & Friends, I don’t know how I could have supported my children or taken care of them or fed them.”

Heidi is facing ovarian cancer. She is con-
fident that the meals she receives from Food & Friends are
just as important as the chemotherapy she goes through.
“Just like you put medicine or ointments on or in your body, the food that you put into your mouth affects how you feel and how strong you get. The gift of food that you give us shows that you really care and that you want us to get better.”

Irma was first connected with Food & Friends
after her sister was diagnosed with breast cancer. Following
her sister’s diagnosis, she became the sole caregiver. In time,
Irma could only leave the house to get food when there was
someone to sit with her ill sister. As expected, leaving her
sister became a huge burden and it became even more dif-
ficult when Irma, herself, was diagnosed with breast cancer.
Food & Friends’ frequent meal deliveries not only alleviated
stress but helped the two sisters celebrate life and spend
quality time together.

On September 11, 2013, National Day of Service and Remembrance,
President Barack Obama volunteered at Food & Friends. He worked
with our regular volunteers to pack more than 500 lunches for
Groceries-to-Go clients. “Every 9/11, obviously, we remember those we lost. We also remember the incredible outpouring of neighbors helping neighbors,” says President Obama.“I want to make sure we encourage everyone out there to volunteer in their own communities.”
