Thank you to Mrs Strachan for the Meal Deal today! It was delicious and tasted even better knowing it was made with some of

our own home-grown vegetables……

Yanco Public School…….Towards a better world 3

Principal’s News Welcome back to Week 2 of Term 1. It has been a very busy yet productive time at Yanco Public School over the last couple of weeks. It is fantastic to see such productivity happening in the classrooms and the students are settling back into their learning routines well. Students who have commenced in both Kindergarten and Year 3 are learning how to follow their classroom procedures and are adjusting well to their learning environments. School Improvements Over the holiday break our administration block received a make over which has provided an abundance of storage and a second work station in the office area. New carpet was also placed in the office area. School Office Parents, students and community members are reminded that the school office is open Monday, Tuesday and Thursday, from 9 am to 4 pm. The office is closed on Friday. Any questions, notes and money can be handed to Mr Powter or Miss Grigg on days when the office is unattended. Taking Care in the heat Yanco Public School is a member of the NSW Cancer Council’s SunSmart school program. As part of this program a strict No Hat No Play policy will be enforced. Students not wearing a school hat will remain under the covered area during recess and lunch. Students are also encouraged to bring a water bottle to school but they must contain water only, no cordial or juice. Lunch boxes should be kept in the refrigerator if they contain meat and dairy products. It is fantastic to see so many students remembering to wear their hats and playing in shady areas during the lunch break. School Routines and Procedures As you would understand there are many school procedures and routines in place to enable a school to operate smoothly and Yanco Public School is no exception. These also include procedures that must be complied with by the school and staff as part of following Department of Education policies. Last Thursday’s short edition of the newsletter included information outlining some of our routines and procedures. Before School Supervision A reminder that our daily school breakfast program is commencing at 8.30am and concluding at 8.50am. Students should not be arriving at school prior to 8.30am unless they are travelling by bus. Teaching staff may be able to cater for students who need to attend school prior to 8.30am after consultation with teaching staff. After School Organisation A short note was sent home earlier this week informing parents and carers of a change to our after-school routine. When students are dismissed each afternoon, they are to pack ALL their belongings into their school bag and sit under the C.O.L.A with their class group. Students will be dismissed in the following order…

• If parents/carers are present on the school grounds students will be called to walk to their parent/carer

• Students travelling on the early bus will be asked to line up with a teacher and WALK out to the bus

• Students walking out of the school grounds to meet their parent/carer waiting in a parked car must wait until they are dismissed and asked to walk out by the teacher on duty

• Students travelling on the late buses can play/sit on the rubber until it is time to walk out with the teacher to the bus stop

• If your child changes buses or is being collected by someone other than their usual parent/carer please contact the school

Home Reading Program The Home Reading program will again continue in 2018, with students being rewarded for reading at home for every 25 nights. For 100 nights reading students will receive a book of their choice and a $25 Scholastic Book Voucher for 200 nights of reading. If your child has not done so already please encourage them to find and use their blue home reading bag to protect their school readers and home reading diary. Years 1-6 have commenced home reading and Kindergarten will commence reading in Week 5 when they will receive a reading diary, blue reading bag and sight words. Class teachers are planning some other very special prizes for those students who demonstrate they are very committed to home reading. Yanco Public Little Learners We are pleased to announce that Little Learners will again run in 2018. The program will commence on Friday, 24 February 2017 and will take place every Friday morning. It will be staffed by Mrs Gina Haines with support from Mrs Kay Strachan and all children 3-5 years of age are welcome to attend. Due to increased demand for places we have capped the program at 20 students and the school is planning an enrolment policy for Little Learners to ensure students enrolling in Kindergarten at Yanco Public School have priority placement. Thank you Barbecue Yanco Public School staff have discussed the idea of hosting a community barbecue to thank all the members of our community for their kind offers of support and donations after our beloved Little Learners classroom was destroyed by fire. A date has not been set as yet however, we are seeking the support of the P and C to work with school staff to provide a barbecue tea for our families and community. Term 1 Whole School Assemblies This term the first Whole School Assembly will be held in Week 4 on Thursday, 22nd February 2018 and the second assembly in Week 8 on Thursday, 22nd March 2017. All assembly afternoons will commence with a shared lunch at 1.10pm. Assembly at 2pm, open classrooms at 2.40pm and normal home time at 3.15pm. A reminder that in Week 4 and Week 8 the $5.00 Canteen Meal Deal will be offered on Wednesdays instead of Thursdays. PB Award This year we are again presenting the PB Award each week at the morning assembly. The recipient will be a student who displays their ‘Personal Best’ during the previous week. This links directly with our school value of ‘Excellence’, the school definition of which is ‘having high expectations and putting maximum effort into everything you attempt’. Captains & Kinders John Gray from The Irrigator visited the school on Monday morning to photograph our seven 2018 Kindergarten students and school captains Georgie Dunn and Rhiannon Jagers. They will be featured in the Irrigator’s Captains and Kinders insert which will be published in the coming weeks. Thanking you, Tarnya Grigg

News from the Office Sometimes the school requires parent’s assistance in transporting children, other than their own, to and from sporting events or small excursions in their private vehicles. It is a DEC mandatory policy that driver’s transporting children other than their own supply the school with a copy of their driver’s licence, car registration and complete a Working with Children Check – Declaration for Volunteers (attached to this newsletter). If you plan on assisting the school by transporting students, can you please bring these documents to the office. If any of your children have a medical condition, for example asthma, we are required by the Department to have an action plan from their doctor. Please provide this information to the school office as soon as possible to enable us to update our records and treat your child accordingly. We thank you for your assistance in these matters.

Sports Report Small Schools Swimming Carnival The Small Schools Swimming Carnival will be held in Whitton tomorrow Friday, 9th February 2018. All students in Years 3-6 will attend the carnival at Whitton Pool, which will commence at 10.00 am sharp and all parents are invited to travel to Whitton to enjoy the day’s activities. Students in K/1/2 will also travel to Whitton for aquatics activities at Whitton Murrami Public School before walking to the Whitton Pool to join the carnival (depending on the weather in the afternoon). Students who turn eight this year and are in Year 2 will also be attending the pool for the swimming events. Details and permission notes were sent home last week and should have been returned to the school. Students will depart the school at 9.15 am and travel to Whitton by bus, returning to school by 3.10 pm. LNPSSA Cricket Last Friday Trevor Dolan and Leelan Sainsbury-Eyles participated in the Leeton Narrandera PSSA Cricket Knockout as members of the Small School’s Cricket Team. It was reported back to the school that both boys contributed well to the team and their behaviour was exceptional. Well done boys. Thank you to Kim Evans and Julie Simons for transporting the boys to and from the event. Thank you also to Mrs Deb Morden from Wamoon Public School for supervising the small schools team on the day. LNPSSA Basketball Nest Tuesday, February 13th boys and girls in year 5 and Year 6 will have the opportunity to participate in the small schools basketball team. Further details will be provided in a separate permission note.

School Uniform The wearing of school uniform builds school pride and a sense of belonging in students. All items of clothing in the school uniform are available from the school office, which is open every day, except Friday. If any parents or carers are having difficulty purchasing items of school clothing, please contact the office

P. and C. News P & C Meeting General monthly meetings of the Yanco Public School P&C are held monthly (on a day yet to be confirmed), commencing at 3.30 pm in the school library. All parents and community members are invited to attend and join the P & C, which serves an important function within the school. Last year it was suggested the P and C meeting takes place at the conclusion of the whole school assembly and open classrooms.

This option will again be discussed with current P and C members. Canteen The canteen re-opened this week. Thank you Mrs Kay Strachan for organising this week’s meal deal. At this stage a weekly roster has not been compiled. Accompanying today’s newsletter is an invitation to all parents who may wish to assist in running the weekly meal deals. If you have some spare time and are able to plan and prepare a menu please fill out the form and return to the front office. Please remember to consider healthy eating options.
