CERAMIC ARTIST REFERENCE
GRADE 6
GRADE 8 GRADE 9
You have now completed a 3D Artist reference chosen alongside your teacher- you
will need to keep this artist at the forefront of your mind.
This artwork should now be completed to a high standard.
SET BEFORE EASTER
CERAMIC FINAL PIECES – STUDENT EXAMPLES
You now need to begin to brainstorm ideas
towards your 3D final sculpture, which will be
made alongside our Artist in Residence during
YR11. Your 3D artwork needs to have clear links
to your subject matter/ theme. Therefore, you
should source images which will aid your 3D
design drawings.
CERAMIC FINAL PIECES – STUDENT EXAMPLES
BUT BEFORE YOU
CAN CREATE
THIS…
CERAMIC FINAL DESIGN IDEAS
…YOU NEED TO
SKETCH A SERIES
OF IDEAS.
These are design sketches by
the famous artist Grayson
Perry.
They inform he’s use of form,
shape and decorative design.
CERAMIC FINAL DESIGN IDEAS
SO, HOW COULD YOU GO
ABOUT THIS…
ASK YOURSELF:
What media do you have
available to you?
What media do your artists use?
What are your media strengths?
What paper are you going to use; coloured paper, lined paper,
brown paper, sugar paper,
sketchpad? These are design sketches by
the artist Jaime Hayon.
They inform he’s use of form,
shape and decorative design.

DESIGN CONCEPT: TEACHER EXAMPLETODAYS TASK:
THIS WILL BE A 2 WEEK DESIGN TASK- YOU WILL BE EXPECTED TO
PRODUCE 6 CERAMIC DESIGNS CONCEPTS/IDEAS.
CONSIDERATION FOR YOUR DESIGN CONCEPT ARTWORKS:• You need to create 6 A5 (Half of A4) ceramic designs informed by
research you undertook last week.
• Consider the materials and equipment you have available – my
examples use; tea-bag stain, pencil, biro, fine liner, sharpies &
posca pens.
You could also use; colouring pencils, coloured fine liners /pens,
highlighters & paints.
• You could add labels, to explain your design concept – do this
thoughtfully.
• Begin by considering how your sculpture will stand; will it have a
base?
• Ensure your sculpture will not be unevenly balanced or top heavy.

CONSIDERATION FOR YOUR DESIGN CONCEPT ARTWORKS:Composition – consider whether your composition so far is working well – does it lead the eye?
Does it produce visual impact?
Colour – consider your use of colour carefully – does it ‘sit’ with the rest of your project? Does it link
well to the artists you have studied?
Tone – how can you use tone to make your designs look 3D?
Media – how are you using different media in your work? Does this show skill? How can you use
media to show textural or decorative elements?
WHAT WILL YOU NEED TO BEGIN?As a minimum you will need 3 sheets of A4 paper, a HB pencil and a Black Biro.
You may have additional equipment at home you can use, please ensure you use this equipment
in a controlled manner.
