YEAR 6 GRADUATION On Wednesday the 14

th December the

Year 6 class celebrated their Graduation in the Common Room. It was wonderful to see the support offered by the children‟s families and friends as they all presented their speeches about their time in Primary School. Each student received their Portfolio that they began in Kindergarten along with a class photo.

FROM THE PRINCIPAL – Peter Callaghan Dear Parents and Carers Well we have reached the end of another school year. As I look over the school landscape I see children who are all taller, older and more confident than they were at the start of the year. It is no secret that a great deal more „work‟ is being done in classrooms now than ever before. Within my span of experience I have seen changes to what is deemed „expected‟ and no more so than in early childhood education. 25 years ago if a child coming to the end of Pre-Primary could hold a crayon to draw a man with what looked like a balloon and could write their name they were considered well and truly ready for Year 1. As I read Pre-Primary reports this year I see comments like “…is aware of the need for capital letters and full stops and uses them frequently.” Well, in many ways the brain is like a muscle and if it is exercised and trained correctly it is capable of a great deal more than we expect and this is what we are trying to do. Correctly exercise and train. Fortunately we keep a very balanced view of this and although capitals and full stops are important in Pre-Primary and bi-nomial fractions are essential in Year 9 there is a lot more to a year at Kojonup District High School and I am pleased to say we have once again offered a very broad and inclusive curriculum. We have had House and Inter-School swimming and athletic events where our students have tackled physical and emotional challenges. We have again hosted the regional Speech and Drama Competition where memory, emotion, strength of character and participation were all tested. We took „sport‟ to a whole new level with our (not so) Mini-Olympics. We have been on trips far and wide; we have hosted visitors who told us amazing things; we have had bbq‟s; we have gazed at the stars; we have had specialist gymnastics lessons and we have learned to dance! In fact we had so much fun spending a whole week learning to dance that we are going to do it again next year!

School is hard. It is meant to be hard. Just as pre-season training is hard so that it can prepare us for the game, school prepares children for their adult life. But as well as being academically challenging and sometimes emotionally demanding we consciously make school as broadly interesting and engaging as our abilities and our resources will allow. Thank you for the year we have spent with your children. We look forward to doing it all again next year. Newsletter Format As you can see we have been changing both the style and purpose of our Newsletter and in this twice per term format

it is more about showcasing what has occurred rather than small reminders of what is coming up. Permission notes are continuing to be sent home in the appropriate time frame and some further fine-tuning to our communications protocols can be expected in the New Year.

Kindy and Pre-Primary Concerns about child safety have been raised by our bus contractor around the Kindy drop off point. This tear-drop space has been set aside for the eleven buses that service our school to drive into and either deliver or collect our youngest and most vulnerable children. The issue raised by our Contractor is that private vehicles are also entering this space, often between buses, to drop off students in the morning. In the afternoon it is even more dangerous as cars are parking in this space waiting for children to leave. This means that adults and children are walking in and amongst moving buses to parked cars making bus driving even more difficult. New signage is being erected and a few small trees are to be removed to give bus drivers a clearer view as they exit and enter Blackwood Road. So for the safety of our children and peace of mind for our bus drivers please plan your drop off and collection differently. For the first five weeks of Term 1 we will have a staff member on bus duty to meet children off their bus in the morning and to assist them on again in the afternoon. While on the issue of buses, can I inform new parents and remind current ones that if you need to change plans around buses it is your responsibility to contact the bus depot to ensure the driver knows and also to let us know so that your child‟s teacher does not convince a small child they are to go home on their usual bus!

Access to School facilities Although school property and facilities are not „public‟ they can and should be accessible to the Public through an appropriate channel. In practice this means that appropriate community groups can make application to me for such access. One current example is that of a sewing group who use our Home Economics Sewing Room each week and pay a small fee for doing so. If you are part of a community based, not-for-profit group and you would like access to some area of the school after hours, feel free to make contact with me and we can discuss options. May you all have a safe, happy and holy Christmas. Regards Peter Callaghan Principal

FROM THE PRIMARY DEPUTY PRINCIPAL – Jayde Hewson WOW!! 2016 School Year is done and dusted… where has the time gone? The last five weeks has seen numerous incursions and excursions with students enjoying themselves immensely. The Year 3‟s have trekked around the Historical Sites of Kojonup, Miss Hutchison‟s Year 2‟s have enjoyed a Billy Milo and damper with Jack Cox at Kodja Place and Mrs Dezotti-Hartnup‟s Year 5‟s have been star gazing at the School Farm. I would like to thank all of the community members that assisted the staff and students on their excursions, without your assistance these events are even more complex to organise. This year has been a very successful year at KDHS! Teachers and students alike should be very proud of the achievements that they have made in the classroom with a successful implementation of Letters and Sounds in K to 2 as well as Talk 4 Writing across the primary sector. I am looking forward to further developing these programs in 2017. As the 2016 school year comes to a close I would like to sincerely thank the numerous people from the Kojonup school community that continually give up their time to volunteer, support and donate to enable the students and staff to do what they do. Without this generosity our jobs become even more challenging. Thank you to the School Council and P & C for your support, assistance and fundraising efforts throughout 2016. Congratulations to the Graduating Year 10 students. Best wishes into your future and good luck in the new paths that your lives will take. To the Year 6 Graduates, well done on the completion of Primary School at Kojonup District High School. We are very pleased to have a large number of you returning in 2017. To all students leaving KDHS at the end of this year, I wish you well in the exciting adventures ahead. Thank you to all of the wonderful KDHS Staff that were involved in the organisation and preparation to ensure the Year 10 Graduation, Presentation Night and Year 6 Graduation all ran without a hitch. Your efforts are greatly appreciated by all! I would like to take this opportunity to

thank Mrs Kate Fleay for stepping in and replacing Mr Trouchet as he enjoyed his LSL. I have enjoyed every minute working alongside you Kate and look forward to next year. We will be farewelling a number of staff this year; I wish you all the best as you will be sorely missed by everyone at Kojonup DHS. We would like to acknowledge the hard work of the following people – Mrs Deb Elliott, Miss Laura Anderson, Mrs Julia Scolari, Mrs Narelle Cussons and Mrs Caroline Jannings. While some may be back in some capacity, it is always sad to farewell staff. I would like wish you all a safe and happy holiday season and look forward to seeing you all back in 2017. FROM THE SECONDARY DEPUTY PRINCIPAL – Kate Fleay Since I last wrote I have survived and in many ways thrived this term. I have worked with a fantastic group of staff and students. I have re engaged with my total passion for classroom teaching and planned lessons to within an inch of their lives with relish. Encourage your children to learn countries, capitals, news where appropriate and have some general knowledge of life as it will help them engage in future conversations. I would like to thank everyone for all their help and patience this term (I attempted to list everyone but limited space prevented me). A specific thank you to Jayde Hewson for being my confidant, back-up singer (metaphorically) and an all-round organisational all-star. Thank you also to Marcelle and Noelene for all that they do to keep the school running. Well done to all who helped out with the Year 10 Graduation. You know who you are and I am very grateful to you. It was a beautiful night and I was so proud of the

young men and women who I have seen come through the school, some of them since Kindy!! Kojonup is very fortunate to have a wonderful student body. Everyone has their ups and downs but, as a whole, I have been very proud of the way our students behave, particularly out in the public arena. This year, as many of you will know, I have attempted to instil the idea of integrity, the “doing the right thing even when no one is watching” theme. This helps us create, not only good students, but good community members and global citizens. Sometimes being there for your mates means, guiding them, standing up to them and not encouraging them in poor behaviour choices. Over my years of teaching, I have found this, sometimes, to be a slow lesson learnt but it‟s the learning it that matters. I‟m sure the students will back me up when I say that after Term 4 I am/we are looking for a long sleep and a very restful holiday. Merry Christmas everyone and best wishes for all that next year holds.
