Introduction The purpose of this Handbook is to guide students and parents/carers in selecting subjects for Year 10 2020. The Handbook is part of the school’s Student Education and Training (SET) Planning Process which assists students to prepare for senior subject selection and career pathways.

Selecting Subjects

The transition from Year 9 into the senior school is a significant step in the life of a high school student. This transition begins with careful and informed decision making. The course of subjects to be undertaken in Year 10 impacts on subject selections in Years 11 and 12. Choices made at this stage begin to shape future career options. In making subject choices, students must consider: 1. Will I enjoy this subject? 2. Will I be successful in this subject given my current academic results? 3. Will I achieve the result in this subject to that to meets the prerequisites for my Year 11 and 12 studies? (Prerequisites for Year 11 and 12 subjects are located in the table on the next page.) Students commencing Year 10 at Nerang State High in 2020 will study the following: 1 Two compulsory subjects - English and Mathematics

2 Six elective subjects.

a. Three electives are studied in Semester 1 and three are studied in Semester 2.

b. Students will be required to select two back up elective subjects should their first preferences not be available.

These must be selected in order of preference.

Students will be required to make their selections via OneSchool during an interview with their Mentor. Refer to the next page for available subjects, prerequisites for studying specific subjects in the Senior School and the Head of Department responsible for each subject. Information regarding the Educational Requirements - QCE, QCIA and ATAR - commences page 6. Student Resource Scheme Fee Structure Fees are based on the calculation of a standard fee scheduled for each year level and additional fees linked to subjects that require a higher level of consumable resources (“High Resource Subjects”).

CORE SUBJECTS: All students will study English and Mathematics.

ELECTIVE SUBJECTS: Students are to choose six subjects from the list below. Three subjects will be studied each semester with the exception of Japanese, Music and Certificate 1 in Furnishings which are whole year subjects. New Senior Assessment System for 2021 Graduates When you start Year 11 in 2021, school will be a little different to how it is for Year 12 students previously. You’ll need to know what to expect under the new QCE system as you start to think about senior subjects. In Year 10, your school and family will help you plan what to study in Years 11 and 12. You’ll discuss what jobs or careers you are interested in and then choose the subjects and courses that will enable you to achieve a QCE and work towards your goals. What subjects can I choose? In the new QCE system, you can study a wide variety of subjects:

• QCAA General subjects— previously known as Authority subjects

• QCAA Applied subjects — previously known as Authority-registered subjects

• Vocational education and training (VET) courses

• School-based apprenticeships and traineeships

• University subjects completed while at school

• Workplace learning

• Certificates and awards such as the Australian Music, Examinations Board Duke of Edinburgh program.

Curriculum

Previous Queensland Certificate of Education (QCE) System

New QCE System

These subjects and programs count towards the QCE: • Authority subjects • Authority Extension subjects • Authority-registered subjects • Short courses • Recognised studies • Vocational education and training (VET)

courses.

Students typically undertake the equivalent of six subjects.

Assessment in Years 11 and 12

Current QCE system New QCE system

Subject results are based on student achievement in internal (school-developed) assessments.

Students typically complete 5–7 summative assessments in Year 12.

Assessment programs are developed by schools for each subject. The QCAA approves these programs. Schools set the assessment and grade the student work in line with approved work programs.

QCAA’s system of external moderation includes processes for monitoring standards of assessment and verifying students’ proposed levels of achievement before certification results.

Subject results in General subjects will be based on student achievement in four summative assessments — three internal assessments and one external assessment that QCAA sets and marks. Subject results in Applied subjects will be based on student achievement in four internal assessments.

For most General subjects, the internal assessment will contribute 75% to the final subject result, except in mathematics and science subjects, where it will contribute 50%.

External assessment will be in all General subjects, but it will not be used to scale a student’s internal assessment result. Instead, the external assessment result will be added to the internal assessment result to arrive at a final subject result.

QCAA will endorse internal assessment instruments before they can be used for summative purposes in schools.

QCAA will confirm the grades schools award by reviewing a selected sample of student work for every subject in every school.

A network of trained assessors will ensure the quality and rigour of assessment and students’ results.

Queensland Core Skills (QCS) Test

Current QCE System New QCE System starting with Year 12 students in 2020

• All OP-eligible students sit the Queensland Core Skills (QCS) Test in Year 12. Group results from the QCS Test are used to help calculate Overall Positions (OPs).

• The QCS Test will no longer exist. The final QCS Test will be held in 2020.

Queensland Certificate of Education

Current QCE System New QCE system applicable to Year 12 students in 2020

• All students who complete Year 12 receive a Senior Statement, which is a transcript of their results. Eligible students also receive a QCE.

• Students are awarded a level of achievement in Authority and Authority-registered subjects from Very High Achievement (VHA) to Very Limited Achievement (VLA).

• All students who complete Year 12 will receive a Senior Statement, which is a transcript of their results. Eligible students will also receive a QCE.

• Students will be awarded an overall numerical score and a level of achievement (A–E) for each General subject. Applied subjects will be reported using a level of achievement only.

Tertiary entrance requirements

Current requirements New requirements starting with Year 12 students in 2020 • OP-eligible students receive a Tertiary Entrance

Statement that shows their OP and Field Positions (FPs). The OP is a rank from 1 to 25, calculated by the QCAA.

• The calculation of OPs and FPs uses students’ achievements in 20 semester units of Authority subjects (the equivalent of five subjects), including at least three subjects studied for four semesters, each scaled against group QCS Test results.

• Authority-registered subjects do not contribute to a student’s OP.

• The QCAA will no longer issue Tertiary Entrance Statements.

• The Australian Tertiary Admission Rank (ATAR) will replace the OP. An ATAR is a number between 0.00 and 99.95. ATARs increase in increments of 0.05.

• The Queensland Tertiary Admissions Centre (QTAC) will calculate ATARs from students’ results using a process of inter-subject scaling.

• An ATAR will be calculated from an eligible student’s best five subject results, one of which may be an Applied subject or a competency- based VET certificate at a level III or above.

• Students must satisfactorily complete a QCAA English subject (C or better) to be eligible for an ATAR. However, a student’s result in English will only contribute to their ATAR if it is one of their five best subject results.

Tertiary entrance processes

Current processes New processes starting with Year 12 students in 2020

• The QCAA calculates OPs. • QTAC manages entrance to most tertiary

institutions in Queensland. • For OP-eligible school leavers, the OP is used for

tertiary entrance in Queensland. • For OP-ineligible students, QTAC calculates a tertiary

selection rank using schedules that consider results in the best 20 semester units of Authority, Authority-registered subjects and/or VET modules recorded on the Senior Statement.

• QTAC will be responsible for tertiary entrance in Queensland.

• The ATAR, calculated by QTAC, will be the primary mechanism used for school leavers seeking entrance to tertiary study in Queensland.

• QTAC will no longer operate schedules for ranking students who are ineligible for an ATAR.

Ancient History delves into the lives, events, arts, conflicts and empires of past civilisations so we can understand how we have developed. It is a fascinating area of study full of weird and wonderful stories of human endeavour, achievement and disaster. Ancient History empowers students with skills in analysing archaeological, written and scientific sources, constructing arguments, challenging assumptions and thinking creatively and critically. The skills developed in Ancient History prepare students for the rigour of senior school and tertiary study.

Other Information As part of the Ancient History course, students will be required to attend excursions to University Queensland and the Queensland Museum. These excursions form an integral part of the course and are compulsory. Reports, based on the data collected on these excursions, form a significant part of the assessment for Ancient History.

By studying Aviation and Spatial Technology you will focus on key technical skills that allow students to better understand the world around them. This course will focus on three key areas:

Biology provides opportunities for students to engage with living systems. Students will develop their understanding of interactions between living things and their environment as well as explain cellular processes that ensure the continuity of life. This course aims to equip students with the ability to communicate effectively and to interact confidently through and within a business environment. It also develops a range of business information and technologies appropriate to the private and public administration sectors. This subject has a VET component in the course which gives the students the opportunity to achieve a BSB10115 Certificate I in Business. To achieve the qualification, students must achieve competence in the core unit and five elective units of competency (see table below). Gaining the Certificate I in Business will attract two credit points towards the QCE (Queensland Certificate of Education).

The course is project-based and comprises a number of specific but inter-related units, in which students have the opportunity to demonstrate their competency to appropriate industry standard. Students build on the skills acquired in Year 9 ITD. The course will provide students with the opportunity to obtain entry-level competencies required by industry. To achieve the Certificate qualification students must successfully complete all units of competency. It is a highly practical subject that develops students’ thinking skills. If students successfully complete the Certificate I in Furnishings, they will achieve two credit points towards their Queensland Certificate of Education (QCE). This course is a whole year subject.

The Duke of Edinburgh Award is an exciting development program that provides young people the opportunity to accept challenges and explore their interests in a program tailored to suit personal circumstances and choices. The Award is both fun and challenging and helps participants’ aged 14 – 25 build confidence and resilience. The Duke of Edinburgh Award will contribute credit towards the successful completion of the Queensland Certificate of Education (QCE) and is increasingly being recognised by potential employers. There are three levels of The Duke of Edinburgh Award – Bronze, Silver and Gold. To achieve these awards, participants will complete an adventurous journey and regularly commit to three ongoing sections: learning a Skill, participating in a community service and taking part in physical recreation.

Foundation Work Readiness is designed as an introduction to the world of work. Students will be given an overview of the expectations that will be put upon them from prospective employers. The course of study will include preparation for what employers are looking for in an employee, appropriate communication at work and will briefly touch on rules, rights and responsibilities in the workplace. Unit 2 will include a module on Occupational Health and Safety as well as providing introductions to supported employment agencies. This course aims to equip students with skills required for a successful entry into gainful employment.

Geography is the study of Earth’s landscapes, peoples, places and environments. It is, quite simply, about the world in which we live. Geography develops an understanding of social and physical processes between people and the environment. Understanding the causes of differences and inequalities between places and people is the primary focus of geography. By completing this course, students will develop skills using ICT rich platforms to collect data and digitally represent their findings using Geographical Information Systems (GIS) and digital mapping tools. By selecting this subject, students will become more socially and environmentally sensitive to the effects that society has upon the physical world and in turn, become responsible citizens.

Other Information As part of the Geography course, students will be required to attend excursions to conduct fieldwork as an integral part of assessment. Students will also be provided with a number of opportunities to represent the school, such as Clean Up Australia Day, and visits to universities, including QUT’s Spatial Real World and UQ’s Earth and Environment Day. These excursions and experiences form an integral part of the course and build a student’s capacity and understanding of the subject and it pathway to University.

Students study the legal system and how it regulates activities and aims to protect the rights of individuals, while balancing these with obligations and responsibilities. An understanding of legal processes and concepts enables citizens to be better informed and able to constructively question and contribute to the improvement of laws and legal processes. This is important as the law is dynamic and evolving, based on values, customs and norms that are challenged by technology, society and global influences. Media Arts in Practice focuses on the role media arts plays in the community in reflecting and shaping society’s values, attitudes and beliefs. It provides opportunities for students to create and share media artworks that convey meaning and express insight. Students learn how to apply media technologies in real-world contexts to solve technical and/or creative problems. When engaging with school and/or local community activities, they gain an appreciation of how media communications connect ideas and purposes with audiences. They use their knowledge and understanding of design elements and principles to develop their own works and to evaluate and reflect on their own and others’ art-making processes and aesthetic choices. Tourism is one of the world’s largest industries. In Australia, it is one of our most important industries and an expanding source of employment opportunity for young people. In this subject, students will develop an understanding of the different businesses and activities that provide for tourists. In Year 10, the focus is on the local area - the Gold Coast – looking at Nerang District, The Hinterland and our coastal beach strip. Classes will explore the general Gold Coast area to develop a better knowledge of tourist destinations and attractions and the elements of marketing the areas.

Visual Arts is a foundation semester for either the Visual Art (General) or Visual Arts in Practice (Applied) courses. Visual Arts provides opportunities for students to engage with a variety of artists. They will not only develop their critical analysis skills but also find a voice and means of communication through exploring different art processes involving 2D and 3D art and craft. Students will conceptualise and develop artworks based on the themes ‘Self-Portrait and Significant People’ and ‘The Great Outdoors.’
