All National Awards are controlled by New Zealand Qualifications Authority (NZQA).

NATIONAL CERTIFICATE OF EDUCATIONAL ACHIEVEMENT

The assessment for each subject is made up of a number of Achievement Standards and / or Unit Standards. Some Achievement Standards are internally assessed and some are externally assessed. All Unit Standards are internally assessed. Each Standard generates a number of credits (generally between 2 and 6 credits) which make up the total for the subject.

Achievement Standards are awarded grades of Not Achieved, Achieved, Achieved with Merit and Achieved with Excellence.

Unit Standards are awarded grades of Not Achieved or Achieved.

NCEA LEVELS 1-3 CERTIFICATE ENDORSEMENT

Endorsement with MeritFor a certificate to be endorsed with Merit, 50 credits at Merit or Excellence will be required at the same level, or higher, on the National Qualifications Framework (NQF) as the certificate being awarded.

Endorsement with ExcellenceFor a certificate to be endorsed with Excellence, 50 credits at Excellence will be required at the same level, or higher, on the NQF as the certificate being awarded.

SENIOR SUBJECTS FOR 2010This information outlines subject choices for all students in Years 11, 12, 13 and beyond. When choosing your subjects, you should look ahead to see that you will be able to take the subjects you want in following years.

YEAR 11 STUDENTS 2010

1. All students will choose 6 subjects.

2. All students must take a course in English, Maths and Science.

3. Students may continue with their two option subjects or choose from the following beginning subjects which are offered.

QUALIFICATIONSExam entry fees are not listed under course descriptions as the school has no control over these.

YEAR 11National Certificate of Educational Achievement Level 1For a student to be awarded NCEA Level 1, they must achieve 80 credits. 8 credits must be literacy and 8 credits must be numeracy. All courses will offer credits towards NCEA Level 1.

NB: A course of 6 subjects could generate approximately 140 credits.

YEAR 12 National Certificate of Educational Achievement Level 2 For a student to be awarded NCEA Level 2, they must achieve 80 credits, 60 credits must be Level 2 or higher, 20 credits may be Level 1, OR 80 credits from Level 2.

YEAR 13National Certificate of Educational Achievement Level 3For a student to be awarded NCEA Level 3, they must achieve 80 credits, 60 credits at Level 3 or higher and 20 from another Level OR 80 credits from Level 3.

University Entrance1. A minimum of 42 credits at Level 3 or higher on the National Qualifications Framework, including

a minimum of 14 credits at Level 3 or higher in each of two subjects from the approved subject list, with a further 14 credits at Level 3 or higher taken from no more than two additional domains on the National Qualifications Framework or approved subjects.

2. A minimum of 8 credits at Level 2 or higher in English or Te Reo Maori; 4 credits must be in Reading and 4 credits must be in Writing. The literacy credits will be selected from a schedule of approved Achievement Standards and Unit Standards.

3. A minimum of 14 credits at Level 1 or higher in Mathematics or Pangarau on the National Qualifications Framework.

STUDENT ALLOWANCES

Student allowances are available to tertiary students over the age of 16 and secondary school students who turned 18 prior to 1 January 2010. The rates of student allowances vary according to age, marital status, parents’ income and living circumstances.

ACCOUNTINGThe study of this subject would be beneficial to those students wishing to specialise in Accountancy or to pursue a career in any area relating to commerce and/or the business world. The subject gives the student a practical knowledge of both the general principles of business finance as well as personal accounting.

Year 11

COURSE DESCRIPTION:Accounting is the language of business; it provides a system for measuring the money value of transactions for businesses and individuals. An understanding of the financial world is an enormous advantage for anyone hoping to cope with the economics of everyday or business life.

The course is divided into four units of work:1. First Steps in Recording Financial Activity Introduces users of accounting, major accounting concepts, financial elements and features of

different entities.

2. Accrual Accounting and Analysing Profitability Involves the recording of financial information on a cash basis and making adjustments to record

assets and liabilities on balance day.

3. Data Processing Involves processing transactions manually and mechanically to the financial statements and

recognising that an accounting system needs controls built in to ensure assets are safeguarded and accurate information is produced.

4. Accounting for Other Entities Explores how community organisations classify and present their financial information and the

application of accounting principles to personal finances.

Year 12

ENTRY REQUIREMENTS: Minimum of 12 credits from Level 1 Accounting OR a minimum of 70 Level 1 Credits from any area OR entry with prior approval from Head of Commerce



COST: Students will be required to purchase three workbooks at a cost of $7 each

COURSE DESCRIPTION:This course looks at the processing of accounting information of a Sole Trader Business. It looks at the day-to-day recording of information through to final records such as Income Statements and Balance Sheets.

The course also looks at Accounting Systems that are operated for the efficient use and control of cash, stock, wages, etc. During the course students will gain practical experience in the use of an accounting computer package to process accounting information.

Year 13

ENTRY REQUIREMENTS: Minimum of 12 credits from Level 2 Accounting


ASSESSMENT: 1 Internal Achievement Standard (5 credits) 5 External Achievement Standards (19 credits)

COST: Students will be required to purchase four workbooks at a cost of $7 each

COURSE DESCRIPTION:The course concentrates on the accounting processes for the preparation of Partnership and Company records. This includes such topics as Cash flow planning and budgeting, Job costing and the analysis of final accounts.

AGRICULTURE AND HORTICULTUREMany students enjoy Agriculture and Horticulture because of the practical components of the course. The internal assessment component gives students who do well in practical work a chance to excel. Taken with sciences, this course provides a background for a wide range of occupations, ranging from landscaping and forestry to commercial nursery work.

Year 11

ENTRY REQUIREMENTS: Can be taken for the first time at Year 11 at the discretion of the Teacher in Charge. Students would need to be of average ability and be prepared to spend extra time gaining the necessary background.


ASSESSMENT: 4 Internal Unit Standards (18 credits) 2 Internal Achievement Standards (8 credits) At the end of the year students will have the opportunity to enter

and sit 4 External Achievement Standards. A maximum of 26 credits would be entered into the student’s Record of Achievement for the subject.

COST: Transport for local field trips approximately $10

COURSE DESCRIPTION:The central theme is the successful growing of plants and managing the environment to achieve this. The principles of plant growth and care are studied in theory and practice.

There are seven main topics: The Plant World: The environmental requirements of plants and their classification Growing Media: The nature of soils, how to modify them and control disease.Plant Propagation: Sexual and vegetative reproduction, monohybrid genetics. Plant Husbandry: Plant nutrition and detecting and combating plant disease.Aspects of Primary Production: A study of the economics of Horticulture production and their impact

on the environment.Landscaping: Changing a landscape plan to suit user.Environmental Impact: The effect of primary production on the environment.

Year 12

ENTRY REQUIREMENTS: Can be taken for the first time at Year 12 at the discretion of the Teacher in Charge. Students who have taken NCEA Level 1 Horticulture would need to have achieved 14 Credits in this subject.


ASSESSMENT: 2 Internal Achievement Standards (8 credits) 3 External Achievement Standards (12 credits) 1 Internal Unit Standard (4 credits)

COST: Transport for local field trips, approximately $10

COURSE DESCRIPTION:1. Physical Factors and Plant Production - looking at the climate, soils and landscape and how these

can be modified for plant production. (Externally assessed).2. Plant Propagation - investigating ways in which new plants are produced. In addition to an externally

assessed standard, students will carry out an internally assessed practical investigation. They will also conduct an internally assessed investigation of a local commercial horticulture production system. This activity will be based on visit to local growers.

3. Factors that affect soil, water and techniques used to modify soil, water. (Externally assessed).4. Landscaping - examining, evaluating, redesigning, researching and drawing landscape plans.

(Internally assessed).

Note that students who wish to study for a degree in Horticulture or Agriculture must take Biology and Chemistry.

Year 13

Year 13 Horticulture can provide a background for a career in Commerce, Management or Horticulture. It offers a new direction for students who have studied Economics or Business Education. For Horticulture students from Year 12 it changes focus from an applied science perspective to a marketing point of view. Students enjoy the challenge and responsibility of research projects.

ENTRY REQUIREMENTS: Can be taken for the first time at Year 13 or by students with a background in Economics, Business Studies or Horticulture or at the

discretion of the Teacher in Charge.



COST: $90 (approx) for a two day trip to Central Otago as well as transport costs for local field trips.

COURSE DESCRIPTION:This course studies the production and marketing of agricultural and horticultural products. There are three sections:(a) Research the production and marketing of a locally produced primary product(b) Investigate the production and marketing of a nationally significant primary product(c) Explain market forces and the relationships between market opportunities and primary products(d) Explain the production process for a nationally significant primary product

An in-depth study of a national and a local agricultural or horticultural product is required.

During Term One students participate in a two day field trip to Central Otago. Places visited include a selection from a winery, an orchard, a packhouse, a research station, a juice factory and a tulip farm. Field trips are also made to local horticultural ventures.

A large part of Term Two and Term Three is spent on two research assignments. One of these assignments requires each student to research a product grown locally in consultation with the grower. The assignments make up 45% of the course assessment. (9 credits).

ART HISTORYArt is relevant to our daily lives as we attempt to understand art works and the circumstances from which they arise. Art affects both the individual and society in general. Exploring different kinds of art and the values attached to them can show us how art permeates our society and culture.

Art History is concerned with the analysis and interpretation of works of art within their cultural and historical context. In this course you gain an appreciation of past and contemporary forms, an understanding of why art is made, where it is housed, who buys it, what works mean and why some works are valued above others. The skills involved in Art History are applicable to a wide range of courses and professions.

Year 12

ENTRY REQUIREMENTS: Students require at least 12 credits in Year 11 English, NCEA Level 1 and this should include the following 1.2, 1.3, 1.4, 1.5 and 1.9 (or at the HOD’s discretion)

COURSE DESCRIPTION:• Analyse art works.• Examine subjects and themes in art.• Examine techniques used in art.• Examine an art movement.• Research an art history topic.• Examine art works in the environment.

The content includes 19th and 20th Century International Art Movements and those of Aotearoa, New Zealand.

Year 13

ENTRY REQUIREMENTS: It is recommended students have studied Art History previously and achieved at least 2.3, 2.4 and 2.5 (or other at the HOD’s discretion)

COURSE DESCRIPTION:• Analyse style in art• Examine iconography in art• Examine media and processes in art• Explain a theory and its role in art• Investigate an art history topic• Examine the context of an art movement

The three following options will be studied:

14th Century Italian PaintingArtists: Giotto, Duccio, Simone Martini, Ambrogio and Pietro Lorenzetti.Suggested content: Personal and regional styles, naturalism, narrative, social/religious context.

High Renaissance and MannerismArtists: Leonardo da Vinici, Raphael, Michelangelo, Pontormo.Suggest content: idealisation, portraiture, influence of Antiquity, Neo-Platonism, patronage.

Modern American ArtTopics include Abstract Expessionism, Women’s Art Movement, Realism, Super-realism and Post-Modernism.

ArtThis subject provides students with a knowledge about making art works and understanding the purposes in which art works are made and valued. A strong career path exists for students looking to a career in Art.

Students will investigate the context in which the visual arts are made, used and valued.• Research art and artworks from Maori and European traditions and their contexts.• Use drawing processes and procedures.• Generate and develop ideas in making artworks. • Extend ideas in other media and techniques.

COURSE DESCRIPTION:A variety of topics are covered including, Behavioural Responses of Plants and Animals, Practical Investigation of some Plant and Animal adaptations, Gene Expression, Evolutionary Patterns, History of Human Development, Contemporary Issues, and Biotechnological Techniques.

The course builds on skills and knowledge gained during Year 12 but also includes many new areas.

BUILDING AND CONSTRUCTIONThis course provides students with an opportunity to gain an insight into the building industry. They will learn basic carpentry skills and knowledge through completing small construction projects.

QUALIFICATION(S): Contributes to Level 2 and Level 3 NCEA Unit Standards Level 2

ASSESSMENT: Fully Internal (18 credits)

COURSE DESCRIPTION:This practical based course, developed in consultation with the Building and Construction Industry

Training Organisation (BCITO) is designed to give students an introduction to the following areas of carpentry.

• Sketching and drawing for construction projects• Identify, select, use and maintain hand tools used for construction• Identify, select, use and maintain portable power tools under supervision• Construct timber garden furniture and items of basic construction• Construct a non-consent timber framed utility building (group project)

Students will apply learnt knowledge to construct personal projects and then work as a group to construct a small building project.

BUSINESS EDUCATIONStudents will gain a great deal of practical experience in all aspects of business including business planning, management, production, marketing and finance. A desire to participate fully (including activities outside of school hours) and work with other students is necessary if students are to achieve success.

Years 12 and 13

ENTRY REQUIREMENTS: A minimum of 70 Level 1 Credits from any area

QUALIFICATION(S): Young Enterprise Certificate. This is not part of NCEA but up to 24 credit equivalents at Level 3 can be applied for if they are required to pass NCEA.

COURSE DESCRIPTION:This course gives students an understanding of what a business does and of the skills necessary for efficient decision-making in business.

This is achieved by the setting up, running and liquidation of a business through the Young Enterprise Scheme.

CHEMISTRYThroughout the history of the human race, people have struggled to make sense of the world around them. Through Chemistry we have gained an understanding of the matter which makes up our world and of the interactions between particles on which our world depends.

Modern society looks to chemists to produce, amongst many things, healing drugs, pesticides and fertilisers to ensure better crops and chemicals for the many synthetic materials produced in the 21st

century. It also looks for an academic understanding of how matter works and how the environment might be protected from the damage humans have caused. Fortunately Chemistry holds many of the answers.

Year 12

COURSE DESCRIPTION:The Chemistry curriculum is designed to build on students’ prior knowledge and aims to develop their understanding of chemical concepts as well as to extend their scientific knowledge and skills, and their ability to investigate problems in a scientific way.

COURSE DESCRIPTION:This course about children focuses on the physical and psychological developmental stages of the child from conception through infancy and childhood. Areas of study include play, learning, health, nutrition, food preparation, first aid, clothing, sleep and parenting skills.

Practical work forms an important part of this course. Students will be required to organise access to a child for some assignments.

CLASSICAL STUDIESClassical Studies is the study of the civilisations of Greece and Rome; two societies that are the ‘cradles of Western Civilisation’ and thus have a direct influence on modern New Zealand society. Students investigate topics which are the origins of modern philosophy, politics, literature, art, science and theatre. This is a multi-disciplinary subject which allows students to develop the skills of communication, organisation, research and analysis and has practical value in preparation for further educational courses, occupations and professions.

Art and Architecture of Pompeii and HerculaneumAn examination of the paintings, mosaics and domestic architecture of Pompeii and Herculaneum.

Roman Social LifeSocial life in the late republic and early empire, with particular reference to social divisions (including slavery), the family (including rites of passage and the role of women), daily life (including living conditions), education and entertainment.

Roman ReligionReligion in the early Roman Empire, with special reference to ideas of divinity, prayer, sacrifice, divination, festivals and ceremonies, private religion, priests, emperor-worship and non-Roman religions (including Christianity).

COMPUTER AIDED DRAWINGThis subject provides students with an opportunity to become competent users of CAD software and develop confidence in the use of computers. Students applying for courses where CAD is used could be at an advantage for course acceptance and in the subsequent course work.

COURSE DESCRIPTION:The primary aim of the course is to upskill students into becoming productive CAD operators. The secondary aim is to improve student computer literacy. As part of this course, students have the opportunity to achieve Unit Standard 19355 Produce Scale Production Drawings. CAD is taught using AutoCAD 2006, Revit Building 8 and Inventor Professional 10. The course is made up of three student tasks. Each task uses one of the three CAD programs. Students start learning with introductory exercises progressing through to the student task.

COMPUTER PROGRAMMINGFor those interested and keen on computer programming. (Those who wish to upskill in computer applications only, e.g. spreadsheets, desktop publishing etc should do Information Technology).NB: A student may not do this subject and Information Technology.

The skills of Drama are relevant to a variety of fields in school, career and life. Drama gives you the opportunity to express yourself.

COURSE DESCRIPTION:Students will develop skills in both scripted and devised performance. They will study a period in theatre history and demonstrate their knowledge through performance. They will have an opportunity to perform a significant acting or technical role in front of an audience. They will develop analytical skills in relation to live performance.

Please note the following:There is a written component to this course. All internal standards require portfolio work to be completed in order for credits to be obtained. No standard is reliant on performance alone. Drama involves group work and working as a team. You must be prepared to undertake this in fairness to others.

ECONOMICSEconomics is about choice, so is at the heart of all decision making. The study of Economics complements an interest in business, politics, international affairs, inequality or environmental issues. It is a wide ranging subject and as a result is relevant to a wide range of fields. The skills of Economics are transferable to other fields so studying Economics will enhance your general employment prospects.

COURSE DESCRIPTION:The course aims to develop an understanding of a number of key economic issues that arise from market forces in the context of the NZ economy: Trade, Economic Growth and Inflation. These issues and government policy alternatives are explored through statistical and analytical tools.

COURSE DESCRIPTION:While continuing to develop the four key language skills (listening, speaking, reading and writing) students are also prepared for the academic requirements of tertiary study. Opportunities are given for interaction in a variety of social and cultural settings.

FASHION AND DESIGNThis subject teaches students how to use the design process to develop and produce garments, outfits or textile products for specific purposes. Students will develop knowledge and skills in planning, design, fashion drawing, pattern making, fit, construction, textiles, and creativity and in developing a portfolio. Design competitions offer extension and an opportunity to express creative talents. Beyond school there are several degree and diploma courses at Universities and Polytechnics. This subject leads on to careers in Fashion and Design, marketing, business, product development and textile research and development.

The major unit of work involves students developing and making a Fashion Trendsetter outfit for themselves and presenting a design portfolio which sets out the planning and development of their design ideas.

COURSE DESCRIPTION:After an introduction to pattern making students will undertake a major design assignment where they

Further optional credits are available from unit standards in Fashion Drawing and Pattern Making.

Course A: Textiles Unit Standards (19 credits)This course comprises two units of work: • Special Occasion wear: Students will design and make a ball gown or garment for a special occasion and present a fashion drawing portfolio. • Tailoring: Students will use tailoring techniques to make fitted tailored trousers using industry techniques. This will include a written assignment.

Course B: Materials Technology Achievement Standards (20 credits)Students will research an issue or need for an external client and use this as the basis for design development and production of a high quality and complex solution. There is scope for students to work in an area of interest and develop their creative skills.

Note: Credits from this course may be used to gain entry to University. Course consultation with the HOD is recommended for people considering this.

FOOD AND NUTRITIONFood and nutrition develops knowledge and skills about food choices and food preparation to enhance well-being and the health of people throughout their lives. Cookery competitions offer extension and an opportunity to express creative talents. This subject leads to careers in health, food and nutrition, food technology and catering. Various avenues for study at tertiary level are possible.

Those students looking towards a practical career working with food may consider taking Hospitality and Catering either in conjunction with Food and Nutrition or as an alternative. Food and Nutrition has a more academic focus.

COURSE DESCRIPTION:Unit 1: Food safety and hygiene: Students will demonstrate safe food handling practices and strategies and apply this in the handling and preparation of food.

Unit 2: Nutrition: Students will develop their understanding of human nutrition with particular emphasis on adolescence, and will plan and prepare food to meet the nutritional needs.

This course consists of two periods of practical and two periods of theory per week.

COST: $80 per year for food COURSE DESCRIPTION:Unit 1: Vegetarianism This unit explores the beliefs and practices associated with vegetarianism and the preparation of vegetarian food Unit 2: Sports Nutrition This unit looks at the best way of fuelling the body to enhance performance. It involves developing understanding of the nutrition principles underpinning how our body performs as well as preparing foods to meet and enhance nutritional needs.Unit 3: Food Choices and Eating Patterns This unit explores the food choices and eating patterns of New Zealanders and the impact such choices are having on the well-being of our society.

Practical work is an integral part of this course. Students taking this academic course need to undertake independent research and have good written communication skills.

FRENCHSenior French enables students to communicate more readily in French. There are opportunities to travel to French-speaking countries in order to improve students’ language and cultural skills.

Languages lead on to a wide variety of tertiary courses and jobs in commerce, tourism, education, media industry and any positions requiring advanced communication skills.

COURSE DESCRIPTION:Almost all basic structures of French are taught by the end of Year 12, so in Year 13 we have the opportunity to read stories, articles and books meant for French adults rather than material specially prepared for those learning French as a foreign language. Oral work is, of course, more advanced.

The course is divided into 4 main skill areas in preparation for the NCEA assessments; reading, writing, listening and speaking. There is a set list of vocabulary and grammar. In Year 13 we study topics such as Regions in France, The Environment, Fairy Tales, Famous French People and Film.

GATEWAYThis subject will give students the chance to explore an occupation in depth, gain relevant credits that could reduce time spent training after leaving school and meet potential employers in their chosen career.

Years 12 and 13

ENTRY REQUIREMENTS: A motivation to work collaboratively, to explore a specific career option and commitment to catchup on work missed while on Gateway placement one day a week.

Available to students in Year 12 and 13 only.

This course will be offered to a limited number of students. Those interested will be interviewed and required to demonstrate an interest in a particular industry or career and have a proven history of regular attendance and reliability.

COURSE DESCRIPTION:Gateway provides the opportunity for students to choose a career and spend one day a week in a work-place gaining work experience as well as working on relevant assessments during that time.

GERMANGerman is a doorway to a major non-English speaking culture. In addition, it can be a matter of practical necessity or a useful skill to have when travelling or making economic contacts. For others, it is of interest for its own sake, or for the doors it opens to cultural, scientific and technical knowledge. Last but not least, language learning is fun.

COURSE DESCRIPTION:This course uses a “communicative approach”, where communicative proficiency and communicative competence are the ultimate goals. Students learn how to communicate in German with native speakers of the language. Study of the grammatical, phonetic and other systems of German remains important, but this study is regarded as a tool to achieve communication and not as an end in itself.

COURSE DESCRIPTION:Year 13 German will continue with a ‘communicative approach’. Nevertheless, reading and writing will receive greater emphasis.

Reading is central to German study at this level and will be practised with a wide variety of texts, which may include newspaper and magazine articles, plays, short stories, detective stories and even simple novels.

Writing should arise naturally from the listening, speaking and reading activities and will be practised mainly as a means of clarifying and reinforcing linguistic knowledge.

The course will follow the National Curriculum covering Levels 2 and 3. It will give students the chance to sit NCEA Level 3 at the end of it.

GRAPHICSGraphics is an important part of design. Graphics skills used in problem solving and communicating information are valued in many vocations. Graphics allows students to learn how to design solutions to problems.

Year 11

COURSE DESCRIPTION:This course teaches students to use Graphics to solve Design Problems. Graphics includes the use of freehand and instrumental techniques to produce two and three dimensional drawings. It covers the rendering of drawings, layout and presentation of work.

COURSE DESCRIPTION:1. Physical Education is a 2 hours per week course covering practical and theoretical aspects of

Algebra, geometry and trigonometry are developed further, along with statistics and probability. There is an emphasis on applications, information processing and the communication of mathematical ideas. For some classes, a Level 2 Achievement Standard in Trigonometry will be offered. Regular homework is set. A graphics calculator is recommended.

Year 12

ENTRY REQUIREMENTS: At least 16 credits from the Year 11 Mathematics Achievement Standards course, with Merit or Excellence in two of the following three Achievement Standards being desirable:

MATHEMATICS BAll Year 11 students must study a Mathematics course. For a National Certificate to be awarded, a student must gain at least 8 credits in Mathematics to satisfy the numeracy requirements and 14 credits in Mathematics to gain University Entrance. It is desirable to have a minimum of 12 numeracy credits in order to be able to pursue most vocational courses beyond school.

COURSE DESCRIPTION:This course deals with the familiar strands of Mathematics: Number, Geometry, Algebra, Measurement, Statistics and Probability.

The level of Mathematics is less demanding than that of the Achievement Standards course.

It is essential to have a scientific calculator.

MATHEMATICS WITH CALCULUSThis is a subject for students who have a major interest in Mathematics. It is also a support subject for those wishing to study Physics, Chemistry, Engineering and Health Sciences at university.It is possible to do both Mathematics with Calculus as well as Statistics and Modelling. Students who do both subjects must have a genuine interest in Mathematics.

Year 13

ENTRY REQUIREMENTS: The Achievement Standards credited must include: 90286 Calculus and at least three of: 90284 Algebra 90285 Graphs 90287 Co-ordinate Geometry 90292 Trigonometric Equations

At least three Merit or Excellence grades in any of the above standards is desirable.

COURSE DESCRIPTION:About half the course deals with Calculus. Differentiation and Integration are developed and extended and the skills learned are applied to problem solving. It is necessary to have a graphics calculator.

The other half of the course is made up of algebra, complex numbers, trigonometry and the geometry of conic sections.

STATISTICS AND MODELLING AThis is a subject for students who need Mathematics to support their studies in biological, health and social sciences, medicine, commerce or any field where the collection and interpretation of data is important. It is possible to do both Statistics and Modelling and Mathematics with Calculus.

Year 13

ENTRY REQUIREMENTS: A minimum of 14 credits in Level 2 Mathematics Achievement Standards.

The Achievement Standards credited must include at least two of: 90284 Algebra 90285 Graphs 90289 Probability

COURSE DESCRIPTION:Five of the seven Achievement Standards are made up of probability and statistics topics where ideas met in Year 12 are developed further. The remainder of the course consists of equation solving and modelling data using graphs. It is necessary to have a graphics calculator.

STATISTICS AND MODELLING BThis is a subject for students who need Mathematics to support their studies in biological health and social sciences, commerce, and any field where the collection and interpretation of data is important.The course content is similar to that in Statistics and Modelling A but fewer Achievement Standards are attempted.It is essential that students in this course have an interest in studying Mathematics.

Year 13

MECHANICAL ENGINEERINGThis course will allow students to develop a sound understanding of basic engineering practices. Qualifications gained through this course may assist students to gain employment or entry to engineering based tertiary courses.

Year 12


QUALIFICATION(S): NCEA Level 2 ASSESSMENT: Unit Standards (14 credits)

COURSE DESCRIPTION:This practical based course, written in consultation with the COMPETENZ (New Zealand Engineering, Food and Manufacturing Industry Training Organisation) is designed to give students an introduction to the following areas of engineering:

• Health and Safety practices• Safe care and use of hand tools

• Engineering safety• Measuring and marking out tools

Using the knowledge from these learning areas, students will manufacture projects which will give an understanding of the practical applications used in engineering today.

MEDIA STUDIESStudents who study either Journalism or Film Media Studies will learn to analyse films in greater depth; gain a deeper understanding of the media as an industry; develop design and computer skills. Journalism students will also be part of the school newspaper team, Echo.

Year 12

ENTRY REQUIREMENTS: 12 Level 1 Achievement Standard English Credits which include Achievement Standard 1.5 (90056) and 1.1 (90052) or 1.9 (90060)

Students will choose to specialise in either Film or Journalism. Entry requirements are the same for both courses. Both courses consist of practical production assessments and theory-based assessments.

Journalism Media StudiesThis course focuses on print journalism with some film theory components. Course content includes: • Interviewing techniques • Photography • Conventions of newspaper writing • Layout and design principles • Writing, designing and producing a magazine feature article • Studying the development and conventions of horror films • Examining the influence of media audiences

Film Media StudiesThis course is a practical and theory-based film course. It covers: • Narrative conventions of film • Close reading of film techniques • Genre study • Media audiences • Producing a news package, from concept and design to the finished product

Note: For both courses, students are required to complete their practical assessments using the school’s software.

Footage filmed on students’ own cameras must be brought in to import on tape as raw footage. Film students need to provide their own tape. If students don’t have a preference for either course, a choice will be made for you.

Year 13

Both the Film and Journalism Media Studies courses are extensions of Year 12 Media Studies but can also be taken by students who have not previously studied it. Both courses will appeal to students interested in writing, films, photography and design.

ENTRY REQUIREMENTS: • Priority entry will be given to students who have completed Level 2 Media Studies.

12 Level 2 Media Studies credits which must include the Production Assessment 2.6 (90765)

• Students who have not studied this subject previously may pick it up at Year 13 if places are available.

15 Level 2 English Achievement Standard credits which include 2.5 (90379) and either 2.2 (90376) or 2.1 (90375)

MUSICIt is a subject that requires hand, eye and ear co-ordination, extending aesthetic and cultural awareness. It improves both individual and team work. Students with musical ability are keenly sought after in teaching, performance work, research, selling and production areas. A student who studies the disciplines of music proves to be well-rounded and shows aptitude across curriculums.

Year 11

ENTRY REQUIREMENTS: Equivalent to Grade 3 Practical Trinity / Royal, or 3 years learning an instrument, plus knowledge of theory equal to Grade 2 and aural perception skills. This is not a beginners course - all students must be able to read notation. Having completed Year 9 and 10 Music is preferred and if students are entering at Year 11, they must have HOD approval.



COST: Possible hire of instruments and itinerant lessons

COURSE DESCRIPTION:Emphasis is placed upon individual and group performances, composition, music knowledge, aural, score reading.

Each student must participate fully in the musical activities within the school.

Year 12

ENTRY REQUIREMENTS: Students must be playing an instrument or singing to a Level 2 NCEA standard or at the discretion of the HOD, and be prepared to take a leadership role in the musical life of the school.

Students must have gained at least 12 credits in Level 1 and achieved one of the two performance standards.

Students intending to go on to NCEA Level 3 must take a full Level 2 NCEA option.

QUALIFICATION(S): NCEA Level 2 Achievement (24 credits) NCEA Level 2 Achievement Credits and / or some Unit Standards

ASSESSMENT: Assessed by teacher throughout the year with external component at end of year


COURSE DESCRIPTION:This course follows similar lines to Level 1 NCEA Music.

Year 13

ENTRY REQUIREMENTS: Playing an instrument or singing to a level at minimum 2 years above Level 11 or at the discretion of the HOD. Must be prepared to take a leadership role in the musical life of the school.

Students must have gained at least 12 credits at Level 2 and achieved one out of the two performance standards.

QUALIFICATION(S): As many credits as required towards NCEA Level 3. 24 Credits are required for a full course. More may be taken if desired dependent on individual course chosen. There may be up to 11 External Credits.

ASSESSMENT: Internally assessed with a standard national common exam in December, in music knowledge (literature), harmony, aural.


COURSE DESCRIPTION:Students may “mix and match” Performance Music Achievement Standards, Music Studies Achievement Standards and Unit Standards to achieve a course that caters to their individual requirements, under the guidance of the course tutor. This can include performance, composition, harmony, aural, music literature, improvisation and conducting.

OUTDOOR RECREATIONThis course would benefit any student with an interest in learning more about outdoor activities or who would like to experience the rewarding challenges they offer. In particular, it would be helpful for those students wanting to pursue a career in adventure tourism or outdoor recreation, with the National Award in Outdoor Experiences being the first step in gaining the experience and skills required.

Year 12

ENTRY REQUIREMENTS: None A selection process may be required.

COURSE DESCRIPTION: The Outdoor Recreation Skills course provides a challenging programme to cater for a wide range of students. Participants will have the opportunity to:

The course will be delivered through a mixture of theory and practical lessons, generally followed by a two to three day assessment camp. The areas of study students will experience are:

• Risk Management • Kayaking • Bushcraft • First Aid• Navigation • Tramping• Camping • Orienteering• Snow Craft • Rock Climbing• Mountainbiking

PHYSICAL EDUCATIONPhysical Education is the study of human movement. It takes knowledge of the human body and applies it to a number of sporting contexts, as well as personal development. This course leads to many opportunities in sport, recreation, leisure and the health industry. A large number of our students use this subject as a springboard to medicine, physiotherapy, sport science and teaching.

Year 12

ENTRY REQUIREMENTS: 15 or more credits from Health and Physical Education NCEA Level 1

COURSE DESCRIPTION:This course will involve a more detailed investigation into aspects of physical education, sport, the individual and society.

The course consists of modules in:• Sports Science (Anatomy, Exercise, Physiology and Biomechanics)• Olympic History• Fitness and Fitness Testing• Training and Programme Design• Motor Skill Learning

• Kiwisport Leadership Award (Teaching)• Sports Practicals (there are four practical activities in 2008)

Year 13

COURSE DESCRIPTION:This course will involve extending concepts and principles learned at NCEA Level 2. Further, it provides an opportunity to apply this knowledge in a variety of settings.

Students at NCEA Level 3 will be expected to:• Plan, design, implement, and review a personalised training programme• Plan, design and implement a survey on leisure within the school community.• Appraise performance, plan and review a programme for performance improvement in a physical

activity, then perform against National standards in that physical activity.• Examine a current physical activity event or trend or issue, impacting on New Zealand society, for

example, childhood obesity and inactivity.

PHYSICSIf you are interested in knowing more about the world of matter and energy from a scientific point of view thinking about a career in aviation, engineering, electronics, health sciences, telecommunications, surveying, architecture, pharmacy, etc, then Physics could be an important subject for you.

Year 12

Year 11

ENTRY REQUIREMENTS: Attainment of a suitable Year 10 standard in Science.


ASSESSMENT: 1 Internal Achievement Standard (4 credits) plus a selection from 5 External Achievement Standards and Unit Standards. The number of credits available varies from 22 to 27 credits depending on the achievement or Unit Standard available in that course.

COURSE DESCRIPTION:Year 11 Science is a course designed to cover a broad range of topics including genetics, micro-organisms; force, motion and energy; introductory chemistry; electricity and carbon chemistry. Investigative skills are developed throughout the year.

There are several courses available in Year 11 Science. Each course covers the same basic content but may be assessed differently using either Achievement Standards or Unit Standards or a combination of both. All students may sit the NCEA Science examinations at the end of the year.

To continue with any of the Year 12 Sciences you will need to gain 14 credits in Achievement Standards in this course.

Year 12

ENTRY REQUIREMENTS: 14 or more Achievement Standard credits from NCEA Level 1 Science or in consultation with the HOD

COURSE DESCRIPTION:Year 12 Science complements the other sciences offered at Year 12 as well as a range of other subjects such as Geography, Physical Education and Mathematics. Year 13

COURSE DESCRIPTION:Year 13 Science is a broad ranging subject that allows students to keep their options open in the Science fields. This subject is University approved for both University Entrance and Scholarship examinations.

NZASE SCIENCE COURSEThis is an opportunity to gain some Level 1 credits where Achievement Standards are perhaps an unrealistic goal. Success in this course would allow you to study NCEA Level 1 Science or Human Biology next year.

Year 11

ENTRY REQUIREMENTS: Recommendation by the Head of Department and / or your choice


ASSESSMENT: Internal Unit Standards (up to 18 credits) NZASE Certificate in Science

COURSE DESCRIPTION:During the year, at least seven topics will be studied. These could include Body Maintenance, Sports Science, Fuels and Energy, The Car, Inheritance and Survival. All topics include both theory and practical work.

SPANISHSpanish is widely spoken around the world and an ability to speak this language proficiently is invaluable in tourism, education, the media industry and government departments. Students’ English skills and cultural awareness are improved, both of which are an asset to any future vocation.

Year 11

COURSE DESCRIPTION:The aims are to understand, speak, read and write simple Spanish. A variety of topics are covered leading on from Year 10. Possible areas of learning are health and wellbeing, talking about the past and reading and following recipes. Students will learn how to use colloquial Spanish and read a range of Spanish texts. There is a prescribed list of vocabulary and grammar to be covered.

Year 12

ENTRY REQUIREMENTS: 12 or more NCEA Level 1 Spanish credits

COURSE DESCRIPTION:Students will continue with their study of Spanish from Year 11 and will learn a much wider range of vocabulary and more complex grammatical structures. We study topics such as Teenagers’ Issues, Future Plans and Travel.

COURSE DESCRIPTION:Students will continue with their study of Spanish from Year 12, learning a wider variety of vocabulary and grammar. The course is divided into four main skill areas in preparation for the NCEA assessments; reading, writing, listening and speaking. In Year 13 we study topics such as The Environment, Fairy Tales, Different Destinations in the Hispanic World and Film.

STARA chance to try prevocational training in some occupations and gain Unit Standards leading towards a National Certificate or papers towards a degree.

Year 12 and 13

ENTRY REQUIREMENTS: A commitment to catch up the work missed in subjects at school while at STAR Course.

Available to Year 12 and 13 students. Some Year 11 students can enrol in special circumstances if referred by Deans or Guidance.

COURSE DESCRIPTION:STAR Courses provide a bridge between secondary and tertiary education. Southland providers offer a wide range of educational programmes for senior students. Furthermore, they lead towards credits for Unit Standards on the National Qualifications Framework.

(a) Long term courses: These courses are 50 hours in length and involve a day of study each week for most of the term.

These courses are most suited to Year 12 and 13 students. Some courses likely to be offered in 2008 are:

Automechanics Electrical Sound Engineering Childcare Carpentry Hairdressing Hospitality and Catering Nursing Joinery Welding

(b) Short term courses: These courses range in length from one to three days and may be in school time or in the holidays

eg Barista.

Some Year 13 students may also have the opportunity to study University papers leading towards a degree. However, there are strict criteria to be met based on NCEA results.

NB: STAR Courses are an ‘extra’. Students must also study 6 subjects in Year 12 or 5 subjects in Year 13.

TECHNOLOGY (Hard Materials)Technology will suit those students who enjoy overcoming challenging problems or issues by working through a problem solving process which fully explores the design process prior to manufacture of high quality solutions.

Year 11

Students are able to choose either Course A or Course B.

COURSE A: COURSE DESCRIPTION: Through challenging project briefs, students are encouraged to follow technological practice,

enabling them to produce innovative solutions encompassing processes and materials from all areas of the workshop.

COURSE B: COURSE DESCRIPTION: A practical based course which will allow students to gain skills and Unit Standards in two specialist

areas of the workshop:• Woodwork and Furniture Making• Mechanical Engineering

Whilst working toward assessment in the two areas, students will complete projects encompassing a range of skills and processes.

Note: At Year 11 students may not study Course A and Fashion and Design. They may only select one of those areas for study.

Year 12

ENTRY REQUIREMENTS: Completed Technology (Hard Materials) Level 1 Course or at the discretion of the Head of Department

Year 13

ENTRY REQUIREMENTS: Completed Technology (Hard Materials) Level 2 Course or at the discretion of the Head of Department


ASSESSMENT: 3 Internal achievement standards (20 credits) 1 External achievement standard (4 credits)


COURSE DESCRIPTION:This course provides students with the opportunity to build on their experience gained at Levels 1 and 2. Students will select a suitable client issue and then use their understanding of technological practice to produce innovative solutions to these issues. This will be achieved through detailed planning and a comprehensive design process. Students need to undertake an enquiring approach and thoroughly investigate all processes and people involved at school, home and throughout the community to aid them in producing a solution.

TOURISMThis subject is designed to introduce students to the tourism industry and to develop skills relevant to a career in tourism.

Year 12

ENTRY REQUIREMENTS: There are no entry requirements for this course of study. However students will be expected to display the positive attitudes and enthusiasm necessary for a successful career in tourism.

QUALIFICATION(S): National Certificate in Tourism and Travel Level Two can be achieved over two years.

ASSESSMENT: Fully internal Unit Standards (34 credits)

COURSE DESCRIPTION:The course includes a variety of activities which develop skills, knowledge and attitudes useful in the world beyond school. It covers Life Skills, Job-seeking Skills, Flatting, Personal Development and Social Awareness.

WOODWORKING AND FURNITURE MAKINGThis course will give students an insight into furniture making techniques using timber, with a focus on hand tools skills. Students will have the opportunity to gain credits towards a Furniture Making National Certificate. This course could lead to being accepted into many of the timber trade courses in tertiary training.

COURSE DESCRIPTION:This practical based course, written in consultation with the Furniture Industry Training Organisation (FITO) is designed to give students an introduction to the following areas of furniture making:• Understanding job specifications• Selection and use of safety equipment• Selecting timber for use in furniture making• Safe use of hand tools and machines• Measuring and calculation of material quantities• Construction of furniture articles• Freehand drawing techniques for use in furniture making

Students will be able to apply their new knowledge and skills while making small furniture articles in a workshop environment.
