NATIONAL CERTIFICATE OF EDUCATIONAL ACHIEVEMENT

The assessment for each subject is made up of a number of Achievement Standards and / or Unit Standards. Some Achievement Standards are internally assessed and some are externally assessed. All Unit Standards are internally assessed. Each Standard generates a number of credits (generally between 2 and 6 credits) which make up the total for the subject.

Achievement Standards are awarded grades of Not Achieved, Achieved, Achieved with Merit and Achieved with Excellence.

Unit Standards are awarded grades of Not Achieved or Achieved.

NCEA LEVELS 1-3 CERTIFICATE ENDORSEMENT

Endorsement with MeritFor a certificate to be endorsed with Merit, 50 credits at Merit or Excellence will be required at the same level, or higher, on the National Qualifications Framework (NQF) as the certificate being awarded.

Endorsement with ExcellenceFor a certificate to be endorsed with Excellence, 50 credits at Excellence will be required at the same level, or higher, on the NQF as the certificate being awarded.

POLICIES

1. Students must enrol in a full time course, i.e. 6 subjects (Year 11 and 12) or at least 5 subjects (Year 13).

2. Students are to enter for the appropriate qualification in each subject.3. Any course changes must be made by 1 March in consultation with the Dean. After this it will be

at the Dean’s discretion.

SENIOR SUBJECTS FOR 2010This information outlines subject choices for all students in Years 11, 12, 13 and beyond. When choosing your subjects, you should look ahead to see that you will be able to take the subjects you want in following years.

YEAR 11 STUDENTS 2010

1. All students will choose 6 subjects.

2. All students must take a course in English, Maths and Science.

3. Students may continue with their two option subjects or choose from the following beginning subjects which are offered.

However, if you do know or if you have ideas about what you might do, you can find out what range of subjects may be needed.

English and Maths are necessary in so many careers that you should check to see what level you need.

QUALIFICATIONSExam entry fees are not listed under course descriptions as the school has no control over these.

YEAR 11National Certificate of Educational Achievement Level 1For a student to be awarded NCEA Level 1, they must achieve 80 credits. 8 credits must be literacy and 8 credits must be numeracy. All courses will offer credits towards NCEA Level 1.

NB: A course of 6 subjects could generate approximately 140 credits.

YEAR 12 National Certificate of Educational Achievement Level 2 For a student to be awarded NCEA Level 2, they must achieve 80 credits, 60 credits must be Level 2 or higher, 20 credits may be Level 1, OR 80 credits from Level 2.

YEAR 13National Certificate of Educational Achievement Level 3For a student to be awarded NCEA Level 3, they must achieve 80 credits, 60 credits at Level 3 or higher and 20 from another Level OR 80 credits from Level 3.

University Entrance1. A minimum of 42 credits at Level 3 or higher on the National Qualifications Framework, including

a minimum of 14 credits at Level 3 or higher in each of two subjects from the approved subject list, with a further 14 credits at Level 3 or higher taken from no more than two additional domains on the National Qualifications Framework or approved subjects.

2. A minimum of 8 credits at Level 2 or higher in English or Te Reo Maori; 4 credits must be in Reading and 4 credits must be in Writing. The literacy credits will be selected from a schedule of approved Achievement Standards and Unit Standards.

3. A minimum of 14 credits at Level 1 or higher in Mathematics or Pangarau on the National Qualifications Framework.

STUDENT ALLOWANCES

The following information is correct as of July 2009, but may be subject to change for 2010. Check the website www.studylink.govt.nz.

Student allowances are available to tertiary students over the age of 16 and secondary school students who turned 18 prior to 1 January 2010. The rates of student allowances vary according to age, marital status, parents’ income and living circumstances.

To qualify for a student allowance:• students must be a New Zealand citizen or a permanent resident of New Zealand• students must be enrolled in a recognised institution (secondary school, university, polytechnic,

technical institute or teachers’ college)• students must be enrolled in a full time course of study recognised for student allowances

purposes• secondary school students must be 18 years of age prior to 1 January 2010

ACCOUNTINGThe study of this subject would be beneficial to those students wishing to specialise in Accountancy or to pursue a career in any area relating to commerce and/or the business world. The subject gives the student a practical knowledge of both the general principles of business finance as well as personal accounting.

Year 11

ENTRY REQUIREMENTS: None

QUALIFICATION(S): NCEA Level 1

ASSESSMENT: 2 Internal Achievement Standards (7 credits) 5 External Achievement Standards (17 credits)

COST: Students will be required to purchase four workbooks at a cost of $7 each

COURSE DESCRIPTION:Accounting is the language of business; it provides a system for measuring the money value of transactions for businesses and individuals. An understanding of the financial world is an enormous advantage for anyone hoping to cope with the economics of everyday or business life.

The course is divided into four units of work:1. First Steps in Recording Financial Activity Introduces users of accounting, major accounting concepts, financial elements and features of

different entities.

2. Accrual Accounting and Analysing Profitability Involves the recording of financial information on a cash basis and making adjustments to record

assets and liabilities on balance day.

3. Data Processing Involves processing transactions manually and mechanically to the financial statements and

recognising that an accounting system needs controls built in to ensure assets are safeguarded and accurate information is produced.

4. Accounting for Other Entities Explores how community organisations classify and present their financial information and the

application of accounting principles to personal finances.

Year 12

ENTRY REQUIREMENTS: Minimum of 12 credits from Level 1 Accounting OR a minimum of 70 Level 1 Credits from any area OR entry with prior approval from Head of Commerce

COURSE DESCRIPTION:This course looks at the processing of accounting information of a Sole Trader Business. It looks at the day-to-day recording of information through to final records such as Income Statements and Balance Sheets.

The course also looks at Accounting Systems that are operated for the efficient use and control of cash, stock, wages, etc. During the course students will gain practical experience in the use of an accounting computer package to process accounting information.

Year 13

ENTRY REQUIREMENTS: Minimum of 12 credits from Level 2 Accounting

QUALIFICATION(S): NCEA Level 3

ASSESSMENT: 1 Internal Achievement Standard (5 credits) 5 External Achievement Standards (19 credits)

COST: Students will be required to purchase four workbooks at a cost of $7 each

COURSE DESCRIPTION:The course concentrates on the accounting processes for the preparation of Partnership and Company records. This includes such topics as Cash flow planning and budgeting, Job costing and the analysis of final accounts.

AGRICULTURE AND HORTICULTUREMany students enjoy Agriculture and Horticulture because of the practical components of the course. The internal assessment component gives students who do well in practical work a chance to excel. Taken with sciences, this course provides a background for a wide range of occupations, ranging from landscaping and forestry to commercial nursery work.

Year 11

ENTRY REQUIREMENTS: Can be taken for the first time at Year 11 at the discretion of the Teacher in Charge. Students would need to be of average ability and be prepared to spend extra time gaining the necessary background.

QUALIFICATION(S): NCEA Level 1

ASSESSMENT: 4 Internal Unit Standards (18 credits) 2 Internal Achievement Standards (8 credits) At the end of the year students will have the opportunity to enter

and sit 4 External Achievement Standards. A maximum of 26 credits would be entered into the student’s Record of Achievement for the subject.

COST: Transport for local field trips approximately $10

COURSE DESCRIPTION:The central theme is the successful growing of plants and managing the environment to achieve this. The principles of plant growth and care are studied in theory and practice.

There are seven main topics: The Plant World: The environmental requirements of plants and their classification Growing Media: The nature of soils, how to modify them and control disease.Plant Propagation: Sexual and vegetative reproduction, monohybrid genetics. Plant Husbandry: Plant nutrition and detecting and combating plant disease.Aspects of Primary Production: A study of the economics of Horticulture production and their impact

on the environment.Landscaping: Changing a landscape plan to suit user.Environmental Impact: The effect of primary production on the environment.

Year 12

ENTRY REQUIREMENTS: Can be taken for the first time at Year 12 at the discretion of the Teacher in Charge. Students who have taken NCEA Level 1 Horticulture would need to have achieved 14 Credits in this subject.

QUALIFICATION(S): NCEA Level 2

ASSESSMENT: 2 Internal Achievement Standards (8 credits) 3 External Achievement Standards (12 credits) 1 Internal Unit Standard (4 credits)

COST: Transport for local field trips, approximately $10

COURSE DESCRIPTION:1. Physical Factors and Plant Production - looking at the climate, soils and landscape and how these

can be modified for plant production. (Externally assessed).2. Plant Propagation - investigating ways in which new plants are produced. In addition to an externally

assessed standard, students will carry out an internally assessed practical investigation. They will also conduct an internally assessed investigation of a local commercial horticulture production system. This activity will be based on visit to local growers.

3. Factors that affect soil, water and techniques used to modify soil, water. (Externally assessed).4. Landscaping - examining, evaluating, redesigning, researching and drawing landscape plans.

(Internally assessed).

Note that students who wish to study for a degree in Horticulture or Agriculture must take Biology and Chemistry.

Year 13

Year 13 Horticulture can provide a background for a career in Commerce, Management or Horticulture. It offers a new direction for students who have studied Economics or Business Education. For Horticulture students from Year 12 it changes focus from an applied science perspective to a marketing point of view. Students enjoy the challenge and responsibility of research projects.

ENTRY REQUIREMENTS: Can be taken for the first time at Year 13 or by students with a background in Economics, Business Studies or Horticulture or at the

discretion of the Teacher in Charge.

QUALIFICATION(S): NCEA Level 3

ASSESSMENT: 2 Internal Achievement Standards (9 credits) 2 External Achievement Standards (11 credits)

COST: $90 (approx) for a two day trip to Central Otago as well as transport costs for local field trips.

COURSE DESCRIPTION:This course studies the production and marketing of agricultural and horticultural products. There are three sections:(a) Research the production and marketing of a locally produced primary product(b) Investigate the production and marketing of a nationally significant primary product(c) Explain market forces and the relationships between market opportunities and primary products(d) Explain the production process for a nationally significant primary product

An in-depth study of a national and a local agricultural or horticultural product is required.

During Term One students participate in a two day field trip to Central Otago. Places visited include a selection from a winery, an orchard, a packhouse, a research station, a juice factory and a tulip farm. Field trips are also made to local horticultural ventures.

A large part of Term Two and Term Three is spent on two research assignments. One of these assignments requires each student to research a product grown locally in consultation with the grower. The assignments make up 45% of the course assessment. (9 credits).

ART HISTORYArt is relevant to our daily lives as we attempt to understand art works and the circumstances from which they arise. Art affects both the individual and society in general. Exploring different kinds of art and the values attached to them can show us how art permeates our society and culture.

Art History is concerned with the analysis and interpretation of works of art within their cultural and historical context. In this course you gain an appreciation of past and contemporary forms, an understanding of why art is made, where it is housed, who buys it, what works mean and why some works are valued above others. The skills involved in Art History are applicable to a wide range of courses and professions.

Year 12

ENTRY REQUIREMENTS: Students require at least 12 credits in Year 11 English, NCEA Level 1 and this should include the following 1.2, 1.3, 1.4, 1.5 and 1.9 (or at the HOD’s discretion)

The content includes 19th and 20th Century International Art Movements and those of Aotearoa, New Zealand.

Year 13

ENTRY REQUIREMENTS: It is recommended students have studied Art History previously and achieved at least 2.3, 2.4 and 2.5 (or other at the HOD’s discretion)

ASSESSMENT: 3 Internal Achievement Standards (11 credits) 3 External Achievement Standards (13 credits)

COST: Nil

COURSE DESCRIPTION:• Analyse style in art• Examine iconography in art• Examine media and processes in art• Explain a theory and its role in art• Investigate an art history topic• Examine the context of an art movement

The three following options will be studied:

14th Century Italian PaintingArtists: Giotto, Duccio, Simone Martini, Ambrogio and Pietro Lorenzetti.Suggested content: Personal and regional styles, naturalism, narrative, social/religious context.

High Renaissance and MannerismArtists: Leonardo da Vinici, Raphael, Michelangelo, Pontormo.Suggest content: idealisation, portraiture, influence of Antiquity, Neo-Platonism, patronage.

Modern American ArtTopics include Abstract Expessionism, Women’s Art Movement, Realism, Super-realism and Post-Modernism.

ArtThis subject provides students with a knowledge about making art works and understanding the purposes in which art works are made and valued. A strong career path exists for students looking to a career in Art.

Acrylic Paints, Brushes, Paper, Pencils and an A3 Folder. A1 Boards are charged out during the year and expected to cost $6.00.

COURSE DESCRIPTION:Students learn in, through, and about the various forms and processes of the visual arts. Through practical work and the study of art works, they learn to make images, to source and develop ideas and to communicate and interpret meaning. Students will investigate the context in which the visual arts are made, used and valued.• Research art and artworks from Maori and European traditions and their contexts.• Use drawing processes and procedures.• Generate and develop ideas in making artworks. • Extend ideas in other media and techniques.

Year 12

ENTRY REQUIREMENTS: NCEA Achievement Standard Art 1.3

ASSESSMENT: 2 Internal Achievement Standards (12 credits) (i) one compulsory photography standard (ii) one painting standard 1 External Achievement Standard Painting (12 credits)

COURSE DESCRIPTION:Students learn through and about the various forms and processes of the Visual Arts. It is similar in structure to the NCEA Level 1 course.

Training Organisation (BCITO) is designed to give students an introduction to the following areas of carpentry.

• Sketching and drawing for construction projects• Identify, select, use and maintain hand tools used for construction• Identify, select, use and maintain portable power tools under supervision• Construct timber garden furniture and items of basic construction• Construct a non-consent timber framed utility building (group project)

Students will apply learnt knowledge to construct personal projects and then work as a group to construct a small building project.

BUSINESS EDUCATIONStudents will gain a great deal of practical experience in all aspects of business including business planning, management, production, marketing and finance. COURSE DESCRIPTION:This course about children focuses on the physical and psychological developmental stages of the child from conception through infancy and childhood. Areas of study include play, learning, health, nutrition, food preparation, first aid, clothing, sleep and parenting skills.

Practical work forms an important part of this course. Students will be required to organise access to a child for some assignments.

CLASSICAL STUDIESClassical Studies is the study of the civilisations of Greece and Rome; two societies that are the ‘cradles of Western Civilisation’ and thus have a direct influence on modern New Zealand society. Students investigate topics which are the origins of modern philosophy, politics, literature, art, science and theatre. COURSE DESCRIPTION:The primary aim of the course is to upskill students into becoming productive CAD operators. The secondary aim is to improve student computer literacy. As part of this course, students have the opportunity to achieve Unit Standard 19355 Produce Scale Production Drawings. CAD is taught using AutoCAD 2006, Revit Building 8 and Inventor Professional 10. The course is made up of three student tasks. Each task uses one of the three CAD programs. Students start learning with introductory exercises progressing through to the student task.

FOOD AND NUTRITIONFood and nutrition develops knowledge and skills about food choices and food preparation to enhance well-being and the health of people throughout their lives. Cookery competitions offer extension and an opportunity to express creative talents. This subject leads to careers in health, food and nutrition, food technology and catering. Various avenues for study at tertiary level are possible.

COURSE DESCRIPTION:Almost all basic structures of French are taught by the end of Year 12, so in Year 13 we have the opportunity to read stories, articles and books meant for French adults rather than material specially prepared for those learning French as a foreign language. Oral work is, of course, more advanced.

The course is divided into 4 main skill areas in preparation for the NCEA assessments; reading, writing, listening and speaking. There is a set list of vocabulary and grammar. In Year 13 we study topics such as Regions in France, The Environment, Fairy Tales, Famous French People and Film.

GATEWAYThis subject will give students the chance to explore an occupation in depth, gain relevant credits that could reduce time spent training after leaving school and meet potential employers in their chosen career.

Years 12 and 13

ENTRY REQUIREMENTS: A motivation to work collaboratively, to explore a specific career option and commitment to catchup on work missed while on Gateway placement one day a week.

COURSE DESCRIPTION:Gateway provides the opportunity for students to choose a career and spend one day a week in a work-place gaining work experience as well as working on relevant assessments during that time.

Students taking this option will also attend Gateway classes during which they will do further study towards their chosen career. Because Gateway students will be out of school for one day a week for at least 20 weeks of the year, they will also have the opportunity during this scheduled class time to complete work missed from other subjects while on placement.

Writing should arise naturally from the listening, speaking and reading activities and will be practised mainly as a means of clarifying and reinforcing linguistic knowledge.

The course will follow the National Curriculum covering Levels 2 and 3. It will give students the chance to sit NCEA Level 3 at the end of it.

GRAPHICSGraphics is an important part of design. Graphics skills used in problem solving and communicating information are valued in many vocations. Graphics allows students to learn how to design solutions to problems.

Both the Film and Journalism Media Studies courses are extensions of Year 12 Media Studies but can also be taken by students who have not previously studied it. Both courses will appeal to students interested in writing, films, photography and design.

MUSICIt is a subject that requires hand, eye and ear co-ordination, extending aesthetic and cultural awareness. It improves both individual and team work. Students with musical ability are keenly sought after in teaching, performance work, research, selling and production areas. A student who studies the disciplines of music proves to be well-rounded and shows aptitude across curriculums.

COURSE DESCRIPTION:Students may “mix and match” Performance Music Achievement Standards, Music Studies Achievement Standards and Unit Standards to achieve a course that caters to their individual requirements, under the guidance of the course tutor. This can include performance, composition, harmony, aural, music literature, improvisation and conducting.

OUTDOOR RECREATIONThis course would benefit any student with an interest in learning more about outdoor activities or who would like to experience the rewarding challenges they offer. In particular, it would be helpful for those students wanting to pursue a career in adventure tourism or outdoor recreation, with the National Award in Outdoor Experiences being the first step in gaining the experience and skills required.

Year 12

COURSE DESCRIPTION:Year 11 Science is a course designed to cover a broad range of topics including genetics, micro-organisms; force, motion and energy; introductory chemistry; electricity and carbon chemistry. Investigative skills are developed throughout the year.

There are several courses available in Year 11 Science. Each course covers the same basic content but may be assessed differently using either Achievement Standards or Unit Standards or a combination of both. All students may sit the NCEA Science examinations at the end of the year.

ENTRY REQUIREMENTS: A commitment to catch up the work missed in subjects at school while at STAR Course.

Available to Year 12 and 13 students. Some Year 11 students can enrol in special circumstances if referred by Deans or Guidance.

COURSE DESCRIPTION:STAR Courses provide a bridge between secondary and tertiary education. Southland providers offer a wide range of educational programmes for senior students. Furthermore, they lead towards credits for Unit Standards on the National Qualifications Framework.

(a) Long term courses: These courses are 50 hours in length and involve a day of study each week for most of the term.

These courses are most suited to Year 12 and 13 students. Some courses likely to be offered in 2008 are:

COURSE DESCRIPTION:The course includes a variety of activities which develop skills, knowledge and attitudes useful in the world beyond school. It covers Life Skills, Job-seeking Skills, Flatting, Personal Development and Social Awareness.

WOODWORKING AND FURNITURE MAKINGThis course will give students an insight into furniture making techniques using timber, with a focus on hand tools skills. Students will have the opportunity to gain credits towards a Furniture Making National Certificate. This course could lead to being accepted into many of the timber trade courses in tertiary training.

Certificate in Furniture Making)

ASSESSMENT: Unit Standards (17 credits)

COST: Costs of materials used in take home projects and training resource material

COURSE DESCRIPTION:This practical based course, written in consultation with the Furniture Industry Training Organisation (FITO) is designed to give students an introduction to the following areas of furniture making:• Understanding job specifications• Selection and use of safety equipment• Selecting timber for use in furniture making• Safe use of hand tools and machines• Measuring and calculation of material quantities• Construction of furniture articles• Freehand drawing techniques for use in furniture making

Students will be able to apply their new knowledge and skills while making small furniture articles in a workshop environment.
