National Anthem

Australians all let us rejoice, For we are young and free; We’ve golden soil and wealth for toil; Our home is girt by sea; Our land abounds in nature’s gifts Of beauty rich and rare; In history’s page, let every stage Advance Australia Fair.

In joyful strains then let us sing, Advance Australia Fair.

St Philip’s College Prayer

O Lord our God, Creator of this universe and all life within it.In the quietness of this moment, as we come into your presence,O Father, we would remember the homes from which we have come and the families we have left. For some of us they are a long way from here.We would remember before you this College, especially Those who care for us, Those who teach us, Those who guide us.Give to them all, wisdom, a kind heart and a generous spirit.Be with each one of us and help us to STRIVE to be our best to SEEK to find the truth to CARE for ourselves, our friends and all who are around us.May we worship and serve you through our words and actionsThis day and forever more.Through Jesus Christ Our Lord.Amen.

Reading

Excerpt from How can I find God? by Joan Chittister

God is not in the whirlwind, not in the blustering and show, Scripture teaches us.

God is in the breeze, in the very atmosphere around us, in the little things that shape our lives.

God is in the contradictions that assail us, in the circumstances that challenge us, in the attitudes that impel us, in the motives that drive us, in the life goals that demonstrate our real aspirations, in the burdens that wear us down, in the actions that give witness to the values of our hearts.

God is in the stuff of life, not in the airy-fairy of fertile imaginations bent on the pursuit of the preternatural.

God is where we are, including in the very weaknesses that vie for our souls.

“Therefore, everyone who listens to these words of mine and acts on them will be like a sensible person who build his house on rock. Rain came down, floods rose, gales blew and hurled themselves against that house, but it did not fall: it was founded on rock”

HymnWe Lift Your Name On High

Lord I lift your name on highLord I love to sing your praisesI’m so glad you are in my lifeI’m so glad you came to save us

School Song

We’re the school of the blue The red, gold and blue In the heart of this great land. We’ve gold to show the rising sunThat heats our rich red sand. We’re proud that we shine In our nation’s soulThe envy of each woman and man. We’re the Saints of the CentreAnd we’ll make you rememberWe’re winners and champions grand.

As the wild summer sunFries the air at middayWe withstand its hostile rays. We’re fired with compassionAnd move into actionSolve problems that come our way. We’ve mountains to climbWild bush to hikeAnd damper to cook in the clay. We’re the team from St PipsAnd determined to gripSuccess in our own novel way.

It’s an enchanting worldAn exciting worldWe try to understand. We believe in the rightTo vote and be heardAnd save our environment grand. We lead with a careful responsible soulAnd achieve what we’ve thoughtfully planned. But we’ll cross the streetIn order to greetA person who needs a hand.

OUTBACK ACHIEVER 2019

Sydney (Syd) George KinsmanThe Alice Springs community is blessed to have amazing people from all walks-of-life living here. Many are born here, and many move here. Though unlike our Outback Achiever, not many of us have lived here for over 70 years, nor have we been as heavily involved in so many community organisa-tions, nor have we built so many homes and build-ings which are iconic to the region, and definitely none of us have a military record like his.

Born in Adelaide on the 2nd July 1921, Sydney George Kinsman was one of 12 children. As the eldest boy in the family he remembers a very busy household, with many relocations. Each move was to a different house to accommodate the growing num-ber of children. With his father working long hours at the South Australian Brewery, Syd also helped out, by scrounging pieces of scrap metal from the Hanson brick factory and then selling it, so he could give money to his mother to go towards the family’s budget.

It wasn’t all work, and as Syd recalls, “Back then people were all friendly. All the neighbourhood kids joined together, played, filled in time and we were all looking for adventure, day after day after day.” Little did he know that he would later be involved in one of the biggest adventures of his life.

After finishing school in Year 7, Syd set out to get a job to help support his family financially. His first job was at an ingot foundry where he made castings for naval torpedoes. “I didn’t have many working years after school. The Second World War had start-ed and when I turned 19 I joined the army together with five friends. I also had a sister who worked in

ammunitions and a sister in the Air Force.”

It was here that Syd’s biggest adventure and chal-lenge began. By the end of 1940 Syd landed in Pal-estine as a member of the 2nd/48th Battalion, who were one of Australia’s highest decorated units of World War II. In 1941, their first battle was the Siege of Tobruk in North Africa and it was there where Syd and 14,000 troops became known as the “Rats of Tobruk.”

“Here we were, soldiers who had only been in the army for 9 to 12 months, meeting Hitler’s best.” Today, Syd is one of only 30 esteemed Rats of To-bruk still able to talk about that time in history. Life in the trenches was unimaginable, and remnants of that time are still evident now. Syd’s hearing was damaged as a result of combat, and he is also known within his family for carrying biscuits in his pock-ets. As Syd explains, “During the war you never knew when you were going to eat next, and the army would send huge tins of biscuits, and you’d keep a supply of them in your pockets.”

After surviving Tobruk, Syd’s battalion were sent to Syria, then Egypt and then onto El Alamein where they fought the early battles. Unfortunately, it was here that due to miscommunication, Syd and twelve others were captured by the enemy and sent to a prisoner of war camp in Northern Italy, and much later he was transferred to work in rice fields.

Twelve months later, Syd and another soldier yet again risked their lives by escaping and making the dangerous trek over the Italian Alps and across gla-ciers into Switzerland, where the Swiss troops were

used all their skills to make things and get things done.” His daughters Tricia and Moogie remember playing there, and then later working there when it opened. The family, together with most people in town were devastated when it was destroyed by fire in 2005.

As a long-term Central Australian resident, Syd recalls a town that had only 900 people when he first arrived. He loved seeing the town grow, a town where people were always ready to help each other and participate in community groups, and this is where Syd and June have played an enormous part in the town’s history. The list of Syd’s community achievements is long:- Volunteer fire fighter, they were the early fire service in Alice Springs when he first arrived.- Long-term committee member of the original Natalie Gorey Pre-School and supporter of the Youth Centre in the time of Joan Higgins.- Master builder of many of the pre-school’s amazing floats for the May Day parades. This was a land- mark day for the whole Alice Springs community and everyone turned out.- From its inception, Syd has been an avid attendee of the Harts Range Races. A chance to meet up with station friends, many for whom he had worked for building and renovating their home steads. - Syd is a champion shooter many times over at the Alice Springs Rifle Range.- Life Member of the Alice Springs Show Society and has attended every show to date. Syd loves the Show!- Member of the RSL and contributor to Legacy and The Salvation Army. These organisations assisted him and his family during his war service and after he returned.- Every ANZAC Day he will be found proudly wear ing his medals, and with his family, he attends the parade and all the services to remember his mates and others. - He is honoured to speak to the younger generation who come to talk to him at these services, as ANZAC Hill is the most special place to him. - Syd, together with Reg Harris tried to make Olive Pink more comfortable at her “new residence” in what is now Olive Pink Gardens. Ms Pink (who was known to be cranky at times) liked Syd enough to plant a tree for him; now that was an achievement!- Syd was also heavily involved in The Ghan

waiting for them.

Cared for by the British Embassy, they remained in Switzerland, for approximately 12 months before they made the journey back to Australia. The trip was a long one, travelling via Geneva, Marseille, Naples and the Suez Canal. From there they trav-elled to Bombay (Mumbai) to Melbourne on a US troop ship arriving in Australia in 1944 after four years’ service overseas. Twelve months later in 1945 after the bombing of Japan, Syd was discharged from the Australian Army.

After his return from the war, and whilst still in the army, Syd did a crash course in building and also worked in the Adelaide Hills gaining knowledge in the industry. As he explains, “We also had the wan-ders. I worked in the grape industry for a little while and one day we rode our bikes beside the river, and this girl was riding past us and I called out ‘Where do you buy rabbit traps?’ She screamed back, ‘At the Post Office’.” On that advice, Syd went to buy a rabbit trap, and who should be there, but the girl on the bike. That girl was June, who later became Syd’s wife.

After being discharged from the army, Syd also earned a living shooting kangaroos (which were in plague proportions). In 1948 there was work up here for shooters, and as Syd prefers country life to city life, he travelled from Adelaide to the Red Centre and sold the hides he caught to RM Williams. Dur-ing this time June followed her heart (and Syd), and made the move to The Alice as well. Two years later, after Syd proposed, they returned to Adelaide to get married, then they made the journey back to Alice Springs to make it their home.

When Syd first arrived in The Alice he was want-ing to earn more money and started working in the building industry. He worked on numerous remote station homesteads, helped construct the original buildings at Uluru, plus many of the first homes in Old Eastside. He was also one of the first building crew to work on the original construction of Pine Gap over 50 years ago.

Syd also worked on many landmark buildings in the rapidly expanding Alice Springs area. One of these was Panorama Guth, Syd’s sentimental favourite. “It was a complicated build that went on for about 12 months,” explained Syd. “Back then everyone

Preservation Society and this was one of his favourite projects. Syd recalls that after he retired he received a phone call from an NT government minister who explained to Syd that the government would loan 12 apprentices for the project if Syd looked after them. As Syd explained, “That was a love job. It was like go-ing to work and it went on for ages.”

Syd’s sense of community stems from his early family life and from a time when neighbourhoods looked after each other. This transitioned to he and June being blessed with a loving, close-knit family and they have carried on the notion of ‘giving to your community’ to their own children, 4 grandchildren and in time they hope to their 4 great-grandchildren. “I’m pleased that’s followed on within the family,” admitted Syd.

It’s well known that Syd always supported newcomers to the community in any practical way he could. His home has always been welcoming to all and he will share and give unconditionally. Syd just wanted anyone who moved to Alice Springs to love it like he has all these years.

When asked what his biggest achievement was (aside from his family) he reflected, “My family home.” It took Syd five years to build his current home on Larapinta Drive in the mid 1970’s. Previously, he and June lived at 1 Gregory Terrace (now the Coles car park). At both of these locations he has had amazing gardens, and for over 50 years, he has displayed Christmas lights which commence on 1st December each year. He does this to simply share the joy of the season, brighten up the community, but mostly just to see the smiles on the faces of the young and the not so young. Making people happy makes him happy even at 98!

A community is only as strong as its members, and the Alice Springs community is privileged. Not only is Sydney George Kinsman one of its oldest citizens, but he is also one of the best role models any commu-nity could wish for: humble, hard-working, brave, generous and loving. A true gentleman - a true Outback Achiever!
