Library News
Read stories, build empathy, make a better world.
Empathy Day, was founded in 2017, inspired by research showing that humans are not born with a fixed quantity
of empathy—it is a skill we learn.
Besides being a core life skill, empathy is a force for social change, as it is a powerful motivator for helping others.
According to neuroscientists, reading fiction is a brilliant way to make us more empathetic. As we read, our brains
are tricked into thinking we are genuinely part of the story and the empathetic emotions we feel for characters wires
our brains to have the same sort of sensitivity towards real people.
We have lots of empathy boosting books in the library. Here is a selection:
A change is gonna come: This inspirational short story and poetry collection from
12 Black, Asian and minority ethnic writers will help to build understanding and
insight. Topics bereavement, Islamophobia, sexuality, racism and mental health.
Boy 87: by Ele Fountain: Shif wants to be an engineer, but one day the soldiers
come for him and he knows he will no longer be safe. The book is a gripping,
uplifting tale of one boys struggle for survival. Fiction can help to understand the
refugee experience like nothing else.
Indigo Donut: by Patrice Lawrence: Indigo lives with a kind foster mum, but
carries almost unbearable emotional pain. This gritty, powerful read will help
you understand how overwhelming emotions can lead us to reject the very people
who care most.
Booked by Kwame Alexander : a pacy, funny, moving verse novel with an
emotionally engaging central character. Nick’s family is breaking up. To cope,
he’s drawing on football, friendship and poetry.
