progress in some of the major development projects that are under-way in Bayonne.19 East: This new apartment has risen where the M & M store
once stood. The developer is already leasing apartments. The newbuilding faces Broadway, 19th Street, and 21st Street. The building’sname come from the address – 19 East 19th Street. It is a short walkaway from the 22nd Street Light Rail Station. The property will alsobe home to a public park.The former C.J. Murphy property: For three generations, the Mur-
phy family operated a fuel business on Avenue E. Now Madison HillProperties is constructing a new apartment house on the site, whichis right in front of the tracks for the 22nd Street Light Rail Station.The construction is still underway.The former Bayonne Plumbing property: The Epstein family op-
erated a plumbing supply business on Avenue E. Now Skye Devel-opment is building a new apartment house on the former storeproperty. The apartment building will stand by the tracks for the22nd Street Light Rail Station. The former Military Ocean Terminal (MOT): We have designated
several redevelopers who are constructing or will construct residen-tial and commercial buildings and mixed-use structures.
The Costco warehouse store is expected toopen in February 2019. The Costco develop-ment will also include an 18-pump gas station. Atlantic Realty has nearly completed the fa-
cades of the residential buildings it is construct-ing in the Harbor Station District.The Gupta brothers’ residential development,
Waterview, is making progress. It is now in thefaçade construction phase. The ferry planned for the southern side of the
former MOT is coming closer to reality. We are now in lease nego-tiations with SeaStreak, the company that will operate the boats.On Friday morning, November 30, Bayonne officials joined with
Lincoln Equities and the media to witness the implosion of thesmokestack and water tower at the former MOT. It was exciting toexperience this moment of Bayonne history. Along with the demo-lition of old military warehouses, the implosion helped to clear theway for the construction of a new state-of-the-art Lincoln LogisticsCenter. That new business operation will provide more than 2,700jobs at full build-out. Construction is expected to start on the logis-tics center next year. We will continue to work for economic progress in 2019.

It’s been the year of a lifetime for Demi-Leigh Nel-Peters but now it’s time for the Miss Universe 2017to relinquish her crown — and get back on a nor-mal sleep schedule.
“When I won the crown,” Nel-Peters, a nativeof South Africa, recalls, “the best piece of advice Ireceived was from Iris (Mittenaere), the Miss Uni-verse that crowned me, toldme, ‘Demi, learn how to sleepanywhere and everywhere be-cause you’re going to need it.’So I have learned just lyingdown on my arms on a desk,whether it’s taking a five-minute nap, whether it’s on aplane, whether it’s in a carride, and believe me those lit-tle naps have come in veryhandy many times.”
Sunday, Dec. 16, on Fox,women representing nearly100 countries will take to thestage at Impact Arena inBangkok for the 2018 MissUniverse competition. Ne-Yois a scheduled performer andSteve Harvey will host as thewomen vie in multiple cate-gories with one being crowned the winner by Nel-Peters in the end.
The past year has been eventful for Nel-Peters,to say the least. She’s gotten to travel the world,meet VIPs and bring her message of empowerment
to women in multiple states and countries. In early2017, she was the victim of a violent carjacking,which prompted her to start “Unbreakable,” amovement that empowers women to learn life-sav-ing skills and how to handle threatening situations.
“We visited about seven states,” she explains,“and meeting women from just all walks of life andjust realizing how much all women have the need
of feeling empowered andhave the need of wanting toknow how to defend them-selves, whether that’s phys-ically or emotionally, was abig eye-opener to me and Ithink I learned a lot from itas well.”
As for how she’ll feelwhen she crowns her suc-cessor, Nel-Peters doesn’tknow. She’s still savoringthe experiences of the pastyear representing hercountry.
“I wasn’t there as an in-dividual,” she says. “I wasthere for 50-plus millionpeople representing awhole nation, a wholecountry and such a diverse
country. And I was so proud and so honored thatmy country trusted me to represent them and rep-resent them on a global scale on an internationalstage. And being able to make them proud I thinkwas a defining moment in my life and one that I’llalways look back to and cherish.”
