City Engineer Recognized for Bayonne Ice Rink Improvements
The New Jersey Society of Municipal Engineers has rec-ognized David J. Samuel, P.E., P.P. & C.M.E. of CME As-sociates, Parlin, New Jersey, Municipal Engineer of the Cityof Bayonne for the “Improvements to the Richard Korpi IceRink” project. Mr. Samuel was presented the Honor PlaceAward for Municipal Projects involving IntergovernmentalCooperation by the Society at their Annual Awards Lunch-eon held November 14, 2018 in Atlantic City.Mr.Samuel was recognized by the Society for the designand construction management of the reconstruction of theindoor skating facility. The facility, located within the Bay-onne High School Campus serves the students of the HighSchool as well as City residents. The former facility hadslowing been falling into disrepair and was in need of re-construction.Through a unique intergovernmental agreement betweenthe Board of Education and the City, funding for the recon-struction was made available. The design called for a com-plete removal and reconstruction of the refrigerated skating
rink and all associated appurtenances in-cluding new dashboards with glass.Complementing the design of the new icerink was a new dehumidification system. The system was installed to provide a yearround operation of the facility. The construction of the project was com-pleted in two phases. The first phase wascompleted for the winter of 2016 in order toaccommodate the High School, youth and adult hockeyleagues. The second phase of construction which beganafter the hockey season, installed the dehumidification sys-tem. The completion of improvements allowed for operationof the facility prior to the spring and summer of 2017. With the completion of the improvements, the City andBoard of Education have realized their goal of providing ayear round fully operational ice rink. Through the hard workof their City Engineer and the cooperation of an intergov-ernmental partnership, City students and residents have astate of the art indoor skating facility ready to serve themfor years to come.

HOLLYWOODBy Tony RizzoHOLLYWOOD — Big news! Sylvester Stallone istaking John Rambo out of mothballs and prepar-ing “Rambo: Last Blood.” But before we see that,Sly has surrounded himself with friends DolphLundgren, Sugar Ray Leonard and former wifeBrigitte Nielsen for “Creed II,” due Nov. 21. Phyli-cia Rashad and Milo Ventimiglia round out thecast. And speaking of not giving up the ghost, Disneyhas heeded the words of critics and fans whothought “Pirates of the Caribbean:Dead Men Tell No Tales” wasbloated, incoherent, repetitive, draining and a rehash of the firstfour films. It also was the lowestgrossing film in the 14-year, $4.5 bil-lion franchise, with a $795 milliongross against a $320 million pricetag. Disney’s solution is to bring onboard Robert Reese and Paul Wer-nick, who successfully wrote the two“Deadpool” films that killed it at thebox office and with fans, just like “Pirates” usedto do.
*** Milo Ventimiglia, rerunning daily in “The GilmoreGirls” and riding high with the hit NBC drama“This Is Us,” will star in the comedy “The Art ofRacing in the Rain,” with Kevin Costner, AmandaSeyfried and Gary Cole, due in 2019. Next up forVentimiglia is the romantic comedy “Second Act,”with Jennifer Lopez, Leah Remini, Vanessa Hud-
gens and Treat Williams, coming Dec. 21.Jennifer Aniston and Reese Witherspoon stillhaven’t settled on a title for the series they’re cre-ating and starring in for Apple, but they’ve settledon their leading man. Steve Carell will return toseries TV (his first since “The Office”) as theirmorning show anchor (too bad “Murphy Brown”beat them to the punch).Ryan Murphy, creator of “Glee,” “Nip/Tuck,”“American Horror Story,” “American CrimeStory,” “Feud: Betty and Joan” and the currentFOX hit “9-1-1,” donated $10 million to the Los
Angeles Children’s Hospital after theysaved his son, Ford, when he was di-agnosed with an often fatal pediatriccancer at 2 years old. Murphy wedphotographer David Miller in 2012and they have two young sons, bothborn via surrogate.
***Wonder Woman may be a superhero, but her studio, Warner Brothers, wasafraid to open “Wonder Woman:1984” right behind their “Joker” withJoaquin Phoenix. They’ve moved her
from November 2019 to June 2020.Dame Judi Dench will play “Deuteronomy” (al-ways played by a man) in the film version of“Cats,” with Idris Elba as Macavity, Jennifer Hud-son (who sings the show-stopping “Memories” asGrizabella and Taylor Swift, due Dec. 19, 2019.Mark Wahlberg has been set to play Steve Austin,“The Six Million Dollar Man,” but the June 2020opening date has been scuttled. Guess superpow-ers only get you so far!
Billy Miller stars as“Drew” on “General
Hospital.”

ample of journalism at its smartest andmost courageous.Premiering Monday, Nov. 26, on EPIX,
the 100-minute film from director AlexWinter (“Deep Web”) tells the story of aninternational group of reporters whopooled efforts and resources to expose amassive global corruption scandalwherein the rich, powerful and famouscould hide their cash from government au-thorities through the establishment of shellcorporations and thus evade taxes. And, it turns out, the amount of cash
not going into the public kitty — in 200countries worldwide — is pretty stagger-ing, in the trillions of dollars, in fact;money that could be spent on infrastruc-ture, health care and education, for in-stance.And it all started with a whistleblower
named John Doe, who leaked data fromthe Panamanian law firm that set up theshell corporations for heads of state, elected officials, dictators, cartel bosses, business leaders, celebrities and athletesfrom around the world.“This broad, global, team-oriented in-
vestigative work is absolutely exactlywhat’s needed right now,” explains Win-

ter, “and these are exactly the kinds ofstories that need to be broken. And in thisage of fake news where you have push-back — you know, what is fake news?Fake news is a term that is coined by cor-rupt actors in order to keep attention offof themselves. That’s literally what it is.“So to me, this is a film that shows
you, OK, these are the people who aremaking the kind of news that is threaten-ing to all kinds of corrupt actors. And it’snot partisan. You have as many people onthe left that are guilty in the Panama Pa-pers leak as you do on the right.”Indeed, this was delicate work for the
reporters who worked on the story withthe International Consortium of Inves-tigative Journalists, and they had to takegreat care to keep their efforts underwraps, lest they upset the wrong people. And for good reason: Since the storybroke in 2016, some have had their livesthreatened and a few, most notably Mal-tese journalist Daphne Galizia, were as-sassinated.As for John Doe, that party’s identity
is still unknown and Winter wants it tostay that way.“It just takes enormous courage for
someone to leak in this day and age,”Winter says. “But it’s often the very waythat we get the information that we need... so outing those sources is really some-thing that should not be pursued.”
