takes away, dumps in the toilet and dis-covers its contents — blood. This is Ebola, an African virus so

deadly it kills up to 90 percent of thoseexposed and for a time in 1989 it was inthis country near Washington, D.C. Thetrue story of how it was discovered andeventually contained is the subject of thesix-part limited series “The Hot Zone,”premiering Monday, May 27, on NationalGeographic.Based on the best-selling book by

Richard Preston, the series stars JuliannaMargulies (“The Good Wife,” “ER”) asLt. Col Nancy Jaax, an Army scientistwho discovers the virus and spearheadsthe fight against it; Noah Emmerich(“The Americans”) as husband Lt. Col.Jerry Jaax, who risks own life in the ef-fort; Topher Grace (“BlacKkKlansman”)as virologist Dr. Peter Jaehring, withwhom she frequently clashes; and LiamCunningham (“Game of Thrones”) as Dr.Wade Carter, Nancy’s ally in the race tokeep the virus from spreading. In Monday’s premiere, Nancy dons lay-

ers of protective gear and takes a new re-cruit through the very precise steps inbiohazard level four training, where sci-entists work with the deadliest diseases

Scientists race to stop a deadly Ebolaoutbreak in Natgeo’s ‘The Hot Zone’

By George DickieThe opening scene hits you over the

head like a sledgehammer.A man, sweating profusely and cov-

ered with boils, staggers down the aisleof an airliner, obviously very ill. Reach-ing his seat, he promptly fills an airsickbag, which a flight attendant dutifully

on the planet and a tiny tear in a suitmeans immediate evacuation and quaran-tine. It was in filming this scene whereMargulies gained a new respect for whatdisease experts do.“It is, for me anyway, horribly claustro-

phobic,” she explains. “I didn’t really findthat out until my first day on the set howclaustrophobic it is until that zipper goes‘sshhh’ and you can’t touch your face andyou can’t do anything except work in thelab basically. You can’t hear. You’re sort ofin an isolated vacuum.”“But what I loved about Nancy Jaax,”

she continues, “is you see it’s such a turn-on for her. She’s in her element there whenshe’s doing that and being able to teach it,that’s her comfort zone, which for me as amere thespian I found really fascinating.”While preparing for the role, Margulies

didn’t get to meet with Jaax, who nowworks for Kansas State University, but shedid talk with her by phone and came awayimpressed by how she didn’t think of her-self as a heroine, just someone doing herjob. The role also made the actress more cog-

nizant of staying clean and washing herhands.“That’s my daily life now,” she says.

“I’m just constantly aware of how muchwe touch ourselves, each other, objectswithout any idea of what’s on it. And so Ihave sadly become hyper-aware of thedangers of it.”

Julianna Margulies stars in “The HotZone,” premiering Monday on Na-tional Geographic.

HOLLYWOODBy Tony RizzoHOLLYWOOD — Best-actor Oscar winner RamiMalek, for “Bohemian Rhapsody,” has left “Mr.Robot” behind to be 007 Daniel Craig’s nemesisin “Bond 25.” Ralph Fiennes (M) and NaomieHarris (Eve Moneypenny) are returning to assistBond. Prior to the April 2020 release of “Bond25,” we’ll see Daniel Craig’s mystery/crime drama“Knives Out,” with Chris Evans, Michael Shannon,Jamie Lee Curtis, Don Johnson, Toni Collette andChristopher Plummer (due Nov.27).Leonardo DiCaprio, who’s com-pleted playing fictional cowboy starRick Dalton in Quentin Tarantino’s“Once Upon a Time in Hollywood”(due July 26), will next star in“Nightmare Alley” from Oscar-win-ning director Guillermo Del Toro. It’s a remake of the 1947 film noirdrama that starred screen heart-throb Tyrone Power. Leo plays a cor-rupt con man who teams up with afemale psychiatrist to scam people.Clint Eastwood currently is directing “The Balladof Richard Jewell,” about the security guard whoselife is turned upside down after it’s leaked, by lawenforcement, that he’s a suspect in the OlympicPark bombing in 1996, turning him from a heroto a criminal.

***Steven Spielberg has lost round one of his fightwith Netflix to have the Academy change its rulesfor films to qualify for Oscar nominations. Films

must be shown in a Los Angeles theater for a weekto qualify, and even though the multiple Oscar-winner “Roma” did that, Spielberg felt “Roma”was made for streaming and wants the ruleschanged so films must have a theatrical run be-fore being available for TV or downloading. Timesthey are a changing.Speaking of Netflix, Ben Affleck has signed to starin the World War II drama “Ghost Army,” basedon a Netflix documentary about soldiers who foolthe enemy by using inflatable tanks, sound effectsand other trickery.

***Back in the 1950s, movie studios uti-lized widescreen CinemaScope and 3-D to get people back into theatresafter the advent of television. Todaystudios are using IMAX and 3-D tomake The Marvel Universe of comic-book heroes larger than life.“Avengers: Infinity War” grossed over$2 billion, making it the fourth all-time box office earner (behind“Avatar,” “Titanic” and “Star Wars:The Force Awakens”). “Captain Mar-vel” earned more than a $1 billion, while “Shazam,” from DC Comics,

easily grossed more than $500 million. But the story here is about “Avengers: Endgame”which grossed $107 million its opening day inJapan (before opening in the U.S.) and amasseda $200 million advance ticket sale. That couldchallenge “Avatar” for first place ... that is until“Avatar” 2, 3 and 4 are released three years in arow starting Dec. 18, 2020, which could be the be-ginning of “The Endgame”!

“Brooklyn Nine-Nine,” which relocated tothat network in the television season justended, the athlete-turned-actor addedhosting duties on “America’s Got Talent:The Champions” this past winter. Now,he’s overseeing the parent contest, too:Crews succeeds Tyra Banks (and, beforeher, Nick Cannon) as “America’s Got Tal-ent” returns for its 14th NBC season Tues-day, May 28.Crews isn’t the only newcomer for this

round, since “Dancing With the Stars”alum Julianne Hough and actressGabrielle Union (“Breaking In”) assumeHeidi Klum’s and Mel B’s former seats onthe judging panel alongside returneesHowie Mandel — marking his 10th an-niversary as part of the show — andSimon Cowell, who created the interna-tional “Got Talent” franchise and contin-ues to serve as an executive producer aswell.“I had it in the back of my head, but I

wasn’t thinking that far ahead,” the affableCrews maintains of possibly being calledup for “America’s Got Talent” while hewas on “Champions” duty. “I was like,‘Hey, this is a spinoff, so let’s just do it.’People kept asking me, ‘Would you wantto do (the original show)?’ And I said,

“Mr. NBC,” he won’t mind.Still co-starring on the police comedy

Terry Crews becomes the host of“America’s Got Talent” as the NBC con-test starts its 14th season Tuesday.

‘Oh, yeah!’ I put it out into the media andthe heavens, and lo and behold, here it is.And I could not be happier.”While “Champions” featured veterans

of “Got Talent” shows from around theworld, Crews now deals with contestantswho haven’t been through the process be-fore. “I was a fan of the show andwatched it,” he reflects, “but when you’rebehind the scenes and you look at theseguys who are about to go on stage in frontof the world for the first time, it’s reallydifferent. Some people, are good, someare bad, and some are so bad that they’regood ... and you start to see what makesa star. It’s really wonderful to watch.”Crews appreciates that Union and

Hough are entering “America’s Got Tal-ent” at the same time he is. “Julianne isoutrageously good at knowing what liveshows should have, and Gabrielle under-stands talent. And Howie is now a con-noisseur of what that ‘it’ factor is, andSimon — the great Simon, the reasonwe’re all here — is the man who makescareers. No one here wants these acts tofail, including me. We want to create agreat show with great acts, and if theywin, we win.”And Crews knows just what winning

“America’s Got Talent” means. “Somepeople will be world-renowned foreverafter this,” he notes, “and it’s like ‘Wow!’to see it from the beginning. Lives willchange.”

‘America’s Got Talent’ has gotTerry Crews as its new host

tastytv by George DickieWin or lose, ‘MasterChef’contestants

get the experience of a lifetimeCompeting on Fox’s “MasterChef” can validate skills, breed confidence

and change lives. Aaron Sanchez, a judge on the series, has seen it hap-pen over and over again.

“You’ve got to remember that a lot of these people, the whole experi-ence in ‘MasterChef’ is the deciding factor whether they go into the foodindustry for good,” explains the award-winning chef, restaurateur andcookbook author. “You know, people leave their jobs to come on thisshow and people alter the course of their lives practically. And even ifthey win, lose or draw, they’ve experienced, they’ve walked away withsomething. They walk away with skill, they walk away with camaraderie, they walk away with the experience of a lifetime.”

Season 10 opens Wednesday, May 29, and finds Sanchez and fellowjudges Gordon Ramsay (who is also the host) and Joe Bastianich evalu-ating the skills and creations of a new batch of talented and passionatehome cooks from across the country, who seek their big break in theculinary world.

The challenges, says Sanchez, will be “bigger and better” as the con-testants are tasked with doing everything from cooking at a high-endrestaurant to catering a pool party for the rich and famous of Los Ange-les.

“We’re doing things like that to really gauge what great students theyare,” he says, “how they handle pressure, how they work at full capacitybecause being a chef is really depending on your team and how goodthey are. So those are some of the things that we’re throwing at them, for sure.”

And when pressure is applied, surprising things can happen, Sanchezsays, as those who seem confident and cocky can crumble and the quiet, reserved types can come to the fore and lead.

“I think pressure brings out the very worst and very best in people,”

Sanchez says. “I dobelieve that leader-ship can be taught.I’m not one of those(people who be-lieves) that you’reborn a naturalleader. I think every-one can find theirvoice in any circum-stance and become aleader. That’s what’sso special, that peo-ple that maybe didn’thave the confidenceor incentive to wantto lead all of a sud-den start leading, and that’s the mostbeautiful thing.”

And if he likes whathe sees, Sanchez, who is executive chefand part owner of aMexican restaurantin New Orleans, makes mental notes.

“I try to keep tabson all the contest-ants,” he says, “espe-cially if they do well and their habits suggest they might (go on to greatersuccess). You know, with social media and stuff, you can really keep trackof people. So it’s really great to see.”
