Break Time Buddies

Early in September the children were given the chance to apply to become a Break Time

Buddy.

Our Break Time Buddies scheme was set up last year in order to help the children in the

infants and juniors mix. The Buddies develop various skills as they carry out their various

responsibilities including caring for the children, organising games, assisting with supervision

as the children go to and from the dinner hall, demonstrating good table manners and

presenting awards.

In order to be appointed as a Buddy, the children first of all complete an application form

explaining their desire to become a Buddy. The children then attend an interview with a

member of staff where they have a further opportunity to demonstrate their ideas about

being a good Buddy.

In all, 16 Buddies were appointed and they have all proved to be really popular with the

children in Foundation Stage and Key Stage One (and the staff!)

School Council

The children once again had the chance to vote for a member of the class to represent them

on the School Council. Several pupils wanted to be considered and each child who wanted to

take part was given two minutes to deliver a speech to their peers. In the end, Kayti was voted

as the member for the girls and Matty for the boys. Ella was asked to become Secretary of the

Council for the year.

The School Council meeting for the first time

Receptionists

Pupils in year 6 applied to become pupil receptionists, a job which is very important and helps

with the running of the school. This year Kayti, Lucy, Abby and Ella were chosen to take on this

important position.

The children are asked to answer the phone at lunch times and pass on important messages.

They also help with the many office jobs, sorting the newsletters, printing out club letters and

shredding old documents.

Their assistance is very valuable and really helps the school office staff.

Football Team

The football team have played brilliantly this

term with wins against Wistaston Green and

Weaver.

Football Club

Our annual Junior House Football Competition was very close this year with some

breathtaking efforts by every player. In the end there could only be one winner and

Peckforton managed to edge out Beeston to become the first house to win the trophy three

times! Louis was awarded top goal scorer with his 8 goals. Oscar received the best player

award whilst Tom won the award for best captain.

Captains this year were:

Beeston: Tom Briscoe

Cholmondeley: Ben HallMow Cop: Hayden Glover

Peckforton: Jordan Carabine

Junior Recycling Officers

Georgia and Sophie were appointed Junior Recycling Officers for this year. They attended a

launch event in October and they have been really keen to promote recycling in school and at

home. They have emptied paper recycling bins and produced a PowerPoint which they shared

in assembly to encourage people to recycle electrical goods at Christmas.

Sleeping Beauty

During our last week in school we thoroughly enjoyed a visit to the Crewe Lyceum Theatre to

watch Sleeping Beauty. The pantomime was great fun and we laughed all the way through the

entertaining show. But the panto was made even more special as Alex, and her sister

Georgina, were starring in it. They danced and sang brilliantly and we were all really proud to

see them perform.

Evacuee Day

One of our favourite lessons this year has been History where we have studied life during

World War Two. We have learned about various aspects of the war - how it began,

propaganda, rationing, air raid shelters, the blitz, blackouts and evacuation. Even in

September, after the exciting visit to Eden Camp the children were already buzzing about our

Evacuee Day which was held in November.

The children all dressed in fantastic war-time costumes showing that they really had learned a

lot. They came into school to take part in the billeting process where local villagers selected

the children they wished to 'adopt. They then enjoyed a short war time assembly before

interviewing two evacuees. They told us about lots of adventures from their time as evacuees.

It was interesting to hear of their pleasant and also not quite so pleasant experiences. The

children then posed for pictures before sending postcards home to their parents (who, of

course, were encouraged to write back). We shared our costumes with other pupils and

danced the Jitterbug. We also took part in a drama activity which encouraged us to thinkabout what it was like to be an evacuee.

Phys Kids

The Phys Kids are a group of children in year 6 who create and organise games for the junior

children to play at lunch times. They also organise fun activities throughout the year and

encourage the younger children to be more active.

In order to become a Phys Kid, the children filled in an application form explaining why they

want to become one and also what they think they could bring to the role. The children then

attended an interview, carried out by a number of teaching staff. This was a great experience

and every child put a lot of effort into their application forms and the answers they gave in the

interview.

Once chosen, the children were put through a training process where they learnt a range of

games and how to organise the younger children.

So far the Phys Kids have played a number of games and are proving very popular with the KS2

children. We can’t wait to try new things next term.

The Phys Kids this year are... ABBY, SOPHIE T, JORDAN, JAMES, TOM, LEWIS, HAYDEN G AND SAM

The Opening of the Eric Swan Sports Ground

In December, the school was invited to attend the grand opening of the Eric Swan Sports

Ground (formerly known as The Brittles’. Mr Wrigley was asked to pick a team to play in an

exhibition match for the mayor and other visiting members of the community.

Eden Camp

On the 25th

September the children went on their first visit of the year.

Eden Camp is a World War Two museum in North Yorkshire. The museum itself was originally

a prisoner of war camp, with each hut telling the story of one aspect of the war. It is a

fantastic museum and it really brings our World War Two topic to life. There is a perfect

balance of things to look at, read and do!

Once the children arrived at Eden Camp they were split into groups and given a small task to

complete. Each group was given a topic to research and a hut and to make a short video all

about it.

After lunch in the mess hut, the children were given time to explore the huts. By far one of the

most popular huts was The Blitz hut. This hut allowed the children to experience walkingthrough a street which has been bombed. Other favourites were the U-boat Menace, Streets

at War and the Civilian Defence.

The children finished the day by trying out the adventure playground, visiting the gift shop and

having a lovely ice cream!

Fancy dress day!

To celebrate the annual Autumn Book Fair we hold a fancy dress day. The 2009 theme was

‘Dress as a Character from a Book’ and we were really pleased with the number of entrants in

Year Six.

In the afternoon the children’s costumes were judged in the hall, in front of the whole school. The Year 6 children were judged by Mr Wrigley and Miss Wright, who were looking for an

original idea which had taken a great deal of time and effort to complete. After a hard

decision, they chose Molly (Cruella De Vile) and Ben (Dumbledore) who both won a book

token to use at the Book Fair.

Thank you to everyone who took part!

Road safety officers

Matty and Oscar were appointed as the school’s Road Safety

Officers. They are keen to promote many issues of road safety

throughout the year.

The boys are already doing an amazing job, documenting their year

in a scrapbook and in the future they are launching their own

competitions. They also want to share road safety issues in

assembly and are hoping to organise different events.

Newspaper club

The school’s newspaper, The Wistaston Swan has been a huge success this term, thanks to thenumber of year 6 children who attend the club.

This year all the children who attend have been given a position so every aspect of school life

can be covered. Some year 6 children however have taken on more important roles in the

overall running of the paper.

Molly and Beth are the editors; this involves them checking the reports once they are finished

and then positioning them in the paper. They help to create the layout of the newspaper. They

also produce podcasts which you can find at www.wistastonswan.co.cc.

Alex, Kerry, Mia and May are the marketing team. They have written to various local business

asking for donations for competition prizes. We hope there’ll be a massive response!

Henry, Staci and Danny are in the finance team for the paper. They decide how the money

made from the selling of the paper should be spent. They have agreed that we should

purchase an extra Dictaphone to record our interviews with teachers and pupils.

First Aid Training

In September, for the first time, Year Six were given the chance to learn some First Aid Skills.

Three ladies from St John’s ambulance came into school for three days to work with both

classes and teach them these important and life saving skills.

The children learnt how to follow the emergency process, DRS ABC and how to make a 999

phone call. They also know how to complete CPR and put a patient into the recovery position.

Finally they learnt how to put on a sling and apply a bandage correctly.

It was an amazing experience for everyone and I know the children found it really interestingand useful.

Peace Child

After half term, the children were told that this year’s Christmas Play would be called ‘The Peace

Child.’ This was a beautiful story about two rival tribes, whose hatred was so strong it tore them apart

and the only thing to bring them peace was a new born child.

Three weeks before the dress rehearsal the children were asked if they wanted to take part in an

audition for the main speaking and singing roles. Many children had a go and we were so impressed

by how clearly and confidently everyone performed.

Once the parts were decided and announced the rehearsals could begin. We were so impressed by

how talented Year Six are! All the actors and actresses learnt their lines quickly and used great

expression. The stage crew were on hand to make props and the percussion group learnt all 10 songs

effortlessly.

On Friday 4th

December the rest of the school came to watch the dress rehearsal. The play came

together perfectly and the audience loved it. Miss Holland said she couldn’t believe how everyone

had learnt their lines so quickly and Miss Andrew said she thought the boys behind the scenes were

brilliant and knew when to bring on the props, when to play the CD and dim the lights.

Finally the play week began and every concert was fantastic. We were really impressed with the

effort that went into every performance. The head teacher from Malbank High School was in the

audience, along with the head of creative arts from Brine Leas. Both said how impressed they were

with the level of talent and felt it was above their high school standard!

We are really looking forward to watching the DVD of the show this week and going to the Oscars

ceremony. Peace Child has been one of the best plays the school has ever performed and we know all

the children gained a lot from it.

Take a look at the album of pictures from the show at www.flickr.com/churchlane.

Wistaston Oscars 2009

During the last week of term the children voted for their favourite Christmas production

performers in our annual Wistaston Oscars. The results will be announced on the very last day

of term, so details of the winners will appear in next term’s Achievement Book. In the

meantime, watch out for news on the blog.

Christmas Carol Service

The term ends with our traditional Christmas Carol Service which takes place at St. Mary’s

Church in Wistaston. Several of the children take part in the service by announcing carols,

reading stories and sharing Christmas poems. Many of the children perform in the school

choir.

This year the service was planned by pupils in Year Six. It was a complete triumph and their

selection of readings was perfect.

The Christmas Service Planning Committee Readers in the Church Service

Jubilee House

Members of the school choir and some performers visited the ladies and gentlemen at Jubilee

House to share some Christmas songs and music from Peace Child. The guests love to see the

children perform and the children have fond memories of appearing at this event.

Bomb Shelters

During the final few weeks at school we worked in teams to build models of War-time

shelters. The design brief was to build a shelter that would protect an egg when a 2kg mass is

dropped from a 3 metre height. This was not an easy job, but it was great fun building the

models and even more fun watching the testing! There was egg everywhere! Take a look at

the Vimeo channel to see a video of the testing! www.vimeo.com/churchlane.

Tesco Presentation

Our elected council members Kayti and Matty travelled to Tesco in Crewe for a special Tesco

for Schools & Clubs presentation. They enjoyed a buffet and got to see behind the scenes in a

supermarket.

They had their photo taken with the MP for Crewe and Nantwich, Mr Edward Timpson.

Winter Warmer

It was great to see so many of our Year Sixes helping out at this year’s Winter Warmer in

November. The event raised lots of money for the school. But Year Six pupils helped out on

many stalls. They especially enjoyed helping on the Year Six stall where our pencil boxes and

hamper tickets were available.
