OVERVIEW OF THIRD YEAR ELECTIVE PROGRAM
The purpose of the electives program in Third Year is to support the career exploration process for
students. Students use third year electives to familiarize themselves with the scope of practice in a medical
specialty, typically outside of required clerkships. Interested students also have the option to enroll in a
four-week research elective in lieu of a clinical elective (see below).
Some students find it helpful to take the various questionnaires offered on the Careers in Medicine
website: www.aamc.org/cim (CiM) prior to making their elective selections. These include the Physician
Values in Practice Scale, the Medical Specialty Preference Inventory, and the Physician Skills Inventory.
Using the results of these assessments, students can then explore various specialty profiles to better
understand the best strategies to enhance your preparedness and competitiveness in various fields. In
addition, when selecting an elective during year three, students should consider the following questions:
1. Is there a field that I am interested in that I have not yet had an opportunity to explore?
2. Am I interested in continuing an existing research project OR getting my first exposure to research
(either foundational science, clinical, or educational)?
3. Does the field that I am interested in pursuing recommend research experience?
4. Is there a clinical mentor with whom you would like to work more closely with?
Students should review the descriptions of electives in this manual completely to understand the location
and any additional onboarding and/or housing requirements unique to some programs.
Various departments sponsor students interested in pursuing research during the third year. Detailed
information about research opportunities available on the NYMC campus is located in the Research
Opportunities Catalog. To engage in a research program in year three, students must commit to a
minimum of 4 weeks. Students will be required to submit a description of his/ her proposed research
activity using the Research Request Form to the Assistant Dean of Medical Student Research for approval
as well as a progress report at the end of the 4-week block. Students will also be required to complete
the CITI on-line human subject research training course during his/ her elective period if not
already completed. Copies of any prior certification must be submitted with the application.
Year three electives are four weeks in duration and must be completed at an NYMC affiliated institution
with an approved member of the NYMC faculty. The registration process is outlined below.
Please note that not every affiliated hospital is able to offer electives in all specialties.
Electives in year three, including research electives, are graded as credit/no credit. Students are evaluated
on his/her active participation and demonstrated professionalism.
Students are responsible for arranging their own transportation and/or housing during their elective block.
Additional resources to assist you with career decision-making are available on LCMS+ and the AAMC
Careers in Medicine website (https://www.aamc.org/cim/)

RESEARCH
Course Title: RESEARCH (IDSM 3510)
Prerequisites: Approved research elective proposal (see information below) Periods Offered: Throughout the academic year
Site(s):
Varies
Clinical/Non-Clinical: Non-Clinical
Grading: Credit/ No Credit
Duration of Elective: 4 weeks
Where/When to
report on first day:
Information about where to report on first day of research elective
will be provided by the student’s research mentor. Students are
advised to email the research mentor at least two weeks prior to
the start of the elective for specific information.
Course Description/Goals: At New York Medical College, students have long been encouraged to engage in
research to hone their skills and make a regular practice of clinical investigation. Conducting research as a medical
student will teach you to critically appraise the scientific literature, develop effective presentation skills, and
enhance critical thinking. These skills not only will make you more competitive for highly selective residency
programs, but are essential to professional success throughout your career.
Research Project Requirements:
1. Formal credit-bearing research electives are available to students in years three and four of the MD
Program.
2. Only projects that demonstrate both scientific and educational merit will be accepted for elective credit.
3. Any student applying for academic credit for research (typically third and fourth year students) is
required to complete a Research Elective Request form and submit to the Assistant Dean of Medical
Student Research ([email protected]) for approval AT LEAST EIGHT WEEKS PRIOR to the start of
your proposed research elective block. On the form, you will describe your proposed project, including
the question you are addressing, the extent of your involvement in the project, and the anticipated
scholarly product that will result from your efforts. Once approved, the signed form will be forwarded
by the Assistant Dean to the Student Affairs Office and Registrar in order to certify the research elective
in your schedule.
4. In order to receive elective credit at the conclusion of the elective, the student must demonstrate
certification of satisfactory performance by his or her faculty mentor.
5. Engaging in a major research elective is a privilege and a challenge, and students who are experiencing
academic difficulty would be better served by focusing on electives more clearly germane to graduation.
6. While recognizing that a "critical time block" is necessary to successfully complete a research
project, other electives are also important to ensure that all students demonstrate balance in
their educational experiences. Three months of uninterrupted research is considered to be a
reasonable maximum time period for which a student can receive academic credit for a research
elective program during the year 4 curriculum. 7. Elective research time can be combined with other part-time electives. Actual time involved,
however, should be approved in advance by the Assistant Dean, OMSR.
8. With the agreement of the faculty mentor, students are also free to pursue non-credited research
activities on vacation or other personal time.

Apply for a Research Elective:
1. Students interested in a substantive research experience should contact a prospective faculty mentor.
The Research Opportunities Catalog contains a listing of NYMC SOM faculty. The Research
Opportunities Catalog includes both the basic/translational and clinical research areas, who welcome
the opportunity to mentor SOM students. The catalog contains the faculty member’s lab/office location,
office telephone number, and (in most cases) e-mail address, along with an overview of the faculty
member’s research interests. Please contact your prospective mentor to learn more about specific
research projects that are available. Please note that you are NOT restricted to the list of catalogued
mentors. You are welcome to seek out opportunities independently by reaching out to faculty.
2. After a specific mentor and research area are identified, the student must prepare a written project
proposal with the assistance of the faculty member using the Research Program Application form.
Note: there is a separate application for the medical student research fellowship.
3. This application must include the following information:
• Student name and contact information
• Mentor name and contact information
• Timeframe of proposed research
• Project description
• Schedule of research and student’s specific role
• Expected research (scholarly) product (e.g., publication, abstract,
presentation, etc.)
• Bibliography/ Literature Search on proposed research topic
4. The completed form should be submitted to the Assistant Dean of OMSR for approval.
The request form must be signed by both the student and the faculty mentor before being
submitted to the Assistant Dean, OMSR. The faculty mentor's signature indicates his or her
approval of the proposed amount of time to be spent on this project as well as approval of the
project itself.
5. Students should be mindful that the complete review process can take up to six weeks, especially
if the proposal involves the use of human subjects or animals.
6. Students engaging in human subjects research must comply with the NYMC policies on human
subjects research, including completing the required certificate course in advance of the start of their
research program. This training is completed online and will take several hours. Please follow the
instructions found here: http://www.nymc.edu/research/office-of-research-administration/human-
subjects-researchirb/assistance-with-citi-registration-process/
7. The Office of Research Administration is an excellent resource for information on additional
administrative requirements related to human subjects research:
8. The medical student should participate in all approval processes required for the research project.
9. Students who are applying for elective credit, must receive a satisfactory evaluation by his/ her research mentor
and comply with all related requirements.
All requests for research electives must be done so by completing the Research Request Form (found in the Research
Opportunities Catalogue.
This form must be submitted to the Assistant Dean of Medical Student Research ([email protected]) for
mentor approval no later than 8 weeks prior to the start of the research elective.

Tips for Writing Objectives
Keep in mind the mnemonic SMART for writing objectives – they should be Specific, Measurable,
Attainable, Realistic, and T i m e -phased. Using Bloom’s Taxonomy, which lists appropriate action verbs
in order of difficulty, may be helpful in generating your own objectives. For example:
