Every year we look forward to sharing with you our Annual Report – a reflection on the past fiscal year’s accomplishments and a reinforcement of our core mission. More than 65 years have passed since Richard Cardinal Cushing invited the Sisters of St. Francis of Assisi to open and operate a school for his “special children.” While our mission has expanded to include individuals with intellectual

disabilities of all ages, we have never wavered from our commitment to create opportunities for individuals with intellectual disabilities to be as independent as possible and valuable members of their communities. Our alumni have become successful actors like Chris Burke, college students like Michael Thompson, successful employees like Anthony Rios and married couples like Kathy and Eric Yudis. Every day we challenge the individuals we support, their families and our staff to set the bar just a little higher than we think is possible.

While these are difficult economic times and some of our peer organizations have closed or consolidated, we believe this is the time to create new opportunities and futures for the people we serve. This year we opened a new adult residence on our Hanover Campus - The Becker House - and we have plans to open several new adult homes in the next couple of years. We also began supporting adults with a second creative day program, Life Opportunities Unlimited (LOU). While LOU has been operational in Braintree for a few years now, this additional location allows us to support more adults in need of therapeutic day services. Our combined enrollment figures for adults and students are now at their highest.

September saw our families gather with us for our Fall Family Weekend as well as one of our most successful St. Coletta Classic Tournaments to date. This golf fund-raiser celebrated its 25th anniversary. Our signature event, the annual Springtime Gala and Fashion Show, was a great success. We received a two-year license from the Department of Developmental Services’ Office of Quality Enhancement for both our employment and residential programs. We now offer our outstanding employment training program to area high schools and our community recreation and afterschool programs bring joy to its participants and respite to area families.

With the generosity of our faithful donors, we renovated several residential spaces andwith your continued help, we will continue to create opportunities, possibilities and hope. Sincerely,

planned giving

65 Years of history...

The Cardinal Cushing Centers is launching a comprehensive Planned Giving Program to provide donors with more ways to support our mission now and in the future. By establishing this program and partnering with those who donate to Cardinal Cushing Centers, we will ensure that there will always be resources available to support people with intellectual disabilities and their families. As we move forward we will grow our endowment, creating a steady income stream for the institution and securing the long-term financial stability of the organization.

Cardinal Cushing Centers’ annual budget is primarily funded through state reimbursements which support the education and services provided to students, adults and residents. Because these dollars do not cover the capital needs of Cardinal Cushing, we rely on individual and corporate donations to ensure that our facilities, technology and value-added programs are adequately funded.

By growing an endowment, or a permanent fund limited to spending only annual income, we will provide a stable funding source that will allow us to address a growing list of capital concerns as well as value-added initiatives not currently reimbursed through state sources. A gift may be unrestricted so that Cardinal Cushing Centers may use it where it is needed most or one can choose to earmark funds for a particular need. Both gifts will help us build our endowment. At present, designated gifts may be made to:

•Offsetfacilitymaintenancecosts •Bridgethegapforindividualtuition •Investinnewtechnology •Retainthebestinteachers,counselorsandadministrators

We offer a full range of charitable gift options so that donors may utilize the benefits of tax, income and estate planning advantages while strengthening the financial security of Cardinal Cushing Centers for the future.

Some planned giving options to consider include:

•Makingabequestinyourwill, eitherbypercentageorspecificamount •NamingCardinalCushingCentersasthebeneficiaryinyourretirement plan, IRA account or life insurance policy. •GiftingtoacharitabletrustandnamingCardinalCushingCentersasa beneficiary •Makingagiftofappreciatedstockorotherappreciatedpropertylike real estate •Giftingyourhomebutretainingtherighttoliveinitfortherestofyou and your spouse’s life

Past

65 Years of history...

Present 65 years later, we have expanded to 2 central locations, with a campus in Braintree and the

original in Hanover and 12 community residences for adults throughout the South

Shore. Our workforce of 515 employees provides quality care and services for our 76 residential and 48 day students as well as 117 adults with developmental disabilities. Some of these services include

18 after school recreation programs and 108 weekly physical therapy sessions. Our

Hanover campus boasts 6 retail sites where our students learn to work

independently, serving countless customers on the South Shore. 37 community partners provide support in the form of employment for the individuals

with disabilities we support.

At the Cardinal Cushing Centers, our commitment to individuals of all ages,

all faiths, and all abilities is grounded in the

founding values of the Sisters of St. Francis of Assisi and

Richard Cardinal Cushing.

The Sisters of St. Francis of Assisi sponsor 11 Corporate Ministries which reflect the Franciscan values of

respect for human dignity; compassionate outreach to those living in poverty; promoting peace and reconciliation; and respect for the environment. The 11 Corporations

are doing great work across the U.S. to help populations in need – be it the elderly, the homeless, the jobless, urban youth, or individuals with

developmental disabilities.
