Building on past success to meet the challenges of the future

As we look back at the past year, there’s plenty to feel good about at Schreiber Pediatric. We marked the center’s 80th anniversary throughout the year by doing more to tell our story. That included hosting an open house in June, producing a new series of marketing videos and announcing a historic grant from the Stabler Foundation that will help us expand our child care services.

Thanks to a generous contribution, we were able to pay off our mortgage, which has helped us improve our financial position. We set the stage for a major transition to a new electronic medical records system, scheduled to be implemented in early 2017. We hired staff and improved operations throughout the center, which has allowed us to reduce wait times and increase payments from insurers. And we met all of the goals laid out by the Board of Directors in their 2014 Strategic Plan, goals that included balancing budgets, eliminating debt and serving more children.

That’s certainly a lot of good news.But we continue to confront several significant challenges.

Reimbursement rates from insurers remain low, so we do not generate enough revenue from therapy services to cover our costs. This is true even as demand for our services continues to rise.

And, as is the case for all nonprofits, fundraising success is never guaranteed. Although the Center has met its fundraising goals in recent years, we recognize the importance of finding new funding sources to replace those who choose to reduce or end their support. Donors who provided significant gifts to Schreiber one year will respond to other worthy organizations the next. A business re-evaluates its marketing strategy and steps away as an event sponsor. We must constantly seek opportunities to tell “The Schreiber Story” to community and business leaders throughout central Pennsylvania.

The leadership at Schreiber is determined to face these challenges head on. The new electronic medical records system will help us take the next step in streamlining our internal processes. The new infant room in our expanded child care center will help us provide a much-needed service to the community. And in 2017 we will turn our attention to building the Schreiber Endowment Fund, a major part of our long-term strategy for keeping Schreiber financially secure.

All of this happens only with your continued support. We look forward to serving the community in 2017 and beyond.

A closer look: 2015-2016 Special EventsTotal Special Event Net Revenue: $353,566

Schreiber Pediatric makes it part of our mission to take great care with the contributions we receive from the community . Here are a few things to note to give you a sense of our financial health .

We operate efficiently. Around 85 percent of our expenses go where they’re supposed to go – for our therapy and education programs . Our three-person team in the Financial Development Office generates more than $350,000 in net revenue from our special events (see accompanying chart on this page) .

That money is critical to supplement the money we receive for therapy and education services, because so much of our program revenue is tied to low reimbursement rates for pediatric therapy .

We put the money where it’s needed most. When we raise money from annual events like our Rubber Duckie Race or our Gala, that money goes right into our general operating fund to help pay for things like therapist salaries . Because of your generous support, Schreiber has been able to add therapists to our staff in the past few years .

And it is therapists working with kids where the miracles happen. Miracles like Emily Graver . Emily came to us in December 2012 at the age of 10 . She had suffered from Rasmussen’s Syndrome, an inflammation of the brain that damages brain tissue and causes uncontrollable seizures . To treat the condition, doctors removed the left side of her brain . When she started at Schreiber she was in a wheel chair, and doctors had told her parents that she would never be able to walk again . Speech was difficult, and she had little function in her right leg, arm and hand .

By June of 2016, Emily wasn’t just walking . She was walking without assistance . She was singing and dancing . She could even jump rope .

That kind of progress and recovery isn’t guaranteed, but it happens a lot at Schreiber . It happens because of our generous community of supporters .
