Deputy Principal - Junior Secondary

Welcome Class of 2024! The Year 7 students look smashing in their new school uniforms. The standard of uniform this year has been set very high with members of our local community commen ng on how smart the students look. Ms Rothwell, Ms Corsbie and I will be working hard to ensure the high standard at the beginning of the year is maintained throughout the year. Remember: ALL students wear their white formal uniform to and from school on Monday, Tuesday, Thursday and Friday. The ONLY day students may wear their sport uniform to and from school is Wednesday.

All students have been assigned their laptops and the Year 7 Digital Literacies classes have begun in

Semester One for ½ Year 7 students. The remainder of the Year 7s will complete the comprehensive ICT induc on

program in Semester Two.

Yr 10 Forum – Science of Happiness

In 2019 Year 10 Forum me has created an opportunity to discuss “The Science of Happiness” with students and share

with them daily prac ces that are scien fically proved to increase their happiness levels and thus create greater

resilience and opportuni es for success. Two very simple strategies we have discussed are:

Daily gra tude – wri ng down something you are grateful for each and every day

Random acts of kindness – giving someone a small gi , giving a compliment, doing something nice for someone

else for the simple pleasure of bringing some joy to another person.

Why not give these prac ces a try? They’re guaranteed to brighten your day!

Graduate Women of Queensland: Sunshine Coast – Holiday Program

For two weeks during the Summer holidays, Year 12 students Per na and Jeanine were sponsored to a end the Lexis

Our experience….

On the 5th of January, we were given an opportunity to a end the Graduate Women English Program for two weeks at

Lexis’ English School on the Sunshine Coast. During those two weeks at Sunshine Coast two different families hosted

us. Week one we stayed with Carol and Ron, and week two we stayed with Janet and Keith.

The Program helps refugee students who are learning English as their second language. It helped us to improve our

grammar and our English communica on in general.

Every weekday, we were brought to school and picked up from school by many different people who just enjoyed

volunteering and wanted to make sure that we got to school and home safe. Every day it was different person who

would pick us up and take us back home. Every day a er school we were taken to many beau ful places such as the

beach and shops. We also did some mountain climbing and some cooking for fun. Some mes a er school we would go

to one of the members of the Graduate Women of Queensland Club to have dinner.

This was a very great opportunity for us, we really enjoyed it and also leaned many things that we didn’t know before.

For example, the English we speak in Australia is not exactly as Bri sh English and also Bri sh English is not exactly the

same as American English but guess what? It’s all English. For example, in America when some people are wai ng for

something they call it a “line” and in Bri sh as well as Australian English they call it a “queue” – but it all means the

same thing. In America they say “drug store” but in Australian and Bri sh English they say “Chemist”. Those are some

interes ng things we leaned, and many more. We really want to thank the school, that includes Ms Jessica Walker and

Mr Sam Dilly, and The Graduate Women of Queensland for this wonderful opportunity.

Spotlight on Leadership of Teaching and Learning – A New Academic Year The new academic year commenced with a buzz of programs for staff in prepara on for our school priority of quality teaching. Amongst the many staff development programs, an informa ve and insigh ul session on High Performance Teams was presented by Dr Lisa Ehrich. This provided an excellent grounding for teachers as they formed Professional Learning Teams (PLTs). This year, all teachers will be par cipa ng in PLTs where they iden fy a need for student improvement and develop relevant programs, strategies, and assessments to improve teaching and student learning outcomes. For Term 1, we have teachers working collabora vely in twenty‐five PLTs. Since the start of the year, our students have par cipated in a range of in‐school and off‐campus learning programs. At the start of

February, I had the pleasure of accompanying students in Legal Studies to conference held at Griffith University, Nathan Campus. Our

students par cipated in a range of workshops, including Family Law, Street Law, and

Refugee Law.

As at Friday last week, I visited 26 classrooms. It was wonderful seeing:

A zest for learning amongst our students

Students engaging in respec ul interac ons with teachers and peers

Energy and enthusiasm from teachers in their presenta on of quality learning experiences for students

A very se led and thriving learning community I finished the week buzzing with confidence in the high quality of teaching and learning at our school. I look forward to con nue with my visits to classrooms.

Our Year 11 and 12 students are now well into the business of learning with our theme for this

year of ‘Take Control of Your Learning’. With this statement we are challenging our learners to

take ac ve steps to make sure they are in the best posi on to make progress.

Students can do this by –

Mapping out an assessment plan for each term which includes assessment deadlines and

ac vi es such as part‐ me work, recrea on, homework and the like.

Speaking up in class. It is smart to ask ques ons.

Seeking help when you might be down.

Being punctual, prepared and produc ve. Make the most of every opportunity.

Staying posi ve and

Being proud of your efforts.

On behalf of the teaching team, I look forward to seeing how our seniors progress. Take control

everyone. Bob Logan

Well done to those students. This year I am also the Year 11 Coordinator. We have held our Student Representa ve Council vote

Year 12

Page 7

I would like to welcome everyone back to the new school year. I am exci ed to be working with this cohort as their Year Co‐ordinator. For Year 12 students this is their last year of high school with only 33 weeks of school le .

Monday 11 February, I was proud to be on stage as the Year 12 students were inducted as leaders of the school. The School Leaders, House Captains and all Year 12 students received their senior badges. Students also took pledge of office in front of the whole school. The Year 12 students demonstrate outstanding leadership and set a very high standard for the rest of the students. Therefore it is important they set the example by wearing the uniform with pride and interact with others with respect and kindness.

This is the year to get involved and enjoy all your school has to offer. It was great to see many Year 12 students par cipate at the swimming carnival last week. Although it will be a busy year for the students, I encourage them all to make most of their remaining me at school. Time will fly before they know it. Do not leave school having regrets of not being involved.

Students who ordered a Senior Jacket at the end of last year are now able to pick them up from Mrs Hudson in the D block office.

As the year ramps up there will be mes when things get a bit tough. We have talked about “Grit” as a characteris c of successful students. It can be described as:

Finish what you begin S ck at it! don’t give up Effort more than your ability determines your outcome.

Year Sevens Soaring Our Year Seven students are off to an incredible start to their high school careers. Many new friendships have been developed and old ones strengthened as the cohort se led in for their first four weeks of high school. Some responses from our Year Sevens when asked what they are liking about high school:

”I like that I get to learn so many different things.” “The teachers are nice.” and my personal favourite: “I’ve made a best mate.”

A big thank you to all those parents who joined us at the Year Seven BBQ – it was a pleasure to meet you all. For those who did not a end, please note that expression of interest forms for camp will be heading home soon. These must be returned with a $50 deposit by 11/03/19. Approximate camp cost is $290 and it will be held from 22‐24 May (Week 5 of Term Two).

Soon, most curriculum areas will reach their ‘pointy’ end with students knuckling down over assessments and exam prep to demonstrate all their wonderful learning. A great way to support your child during this busy me is to help them create and manage an assessment schedule, provide encouragement, and to learn alongside them.

We look forward to comple ng a great Term One with all these bright, young minds!

Junior Secondary Team – Di, Imogen and Jess.

Plas c Container Collec on

Our Year Seven Green Team raises important funds for sustainability projects within our school through the collec on of refundable containers. Recently, your child may have brought home an orange mesh bag. Please place any plas c or n in this bag that has ‘10c’ somewhere on the label. Once full, these bags can either be returned to the school or taken to envirobank collec on centres – we will be refunded 10c per acceptable item. Items must be clean, uncrushed and without a lid. In the second last week of the school holidays, over three days, Kat and I were lucky enough to a end the Griffith

university future leaders retreat held at the Gold Coast campus. Over the three days of the retreat we were able to meet

and get to know other school leaders. Each day of the retreat gave students the opportunity to listen and learn from

guest speakers on a variety of topics including public speaking skills and the future of work for our genera on. The

retreat also gave students opportuni es to tour the Griffith Gold Coast campus and experience what university is like. I

was lucky enough to take part in the law and business workshop. This allowed me to learn more about both criminal law,

global finance and marke ng. Students also had the op on to par cipate in a den stry and engineering workshop.

Overall, the Griffith university future leaders retreat was a very rewarding experience as students got to learn from very

interes ng and knowledgeable speakers as well as get an insight into university life. Therefore, I would recommend this

program to other students going into Year 12.

Griffith Uni

During the holidays I was lucky enough to a end the Griffith University Future Leaders Retreat. This was a three‐day retreat at Griffith’s Gold Coast campus where we par cipated in a number of fun ac vi es, listened to a variety of different lectures and got the chance to ask real Griffith students any ques ons we had about uni. We got to meet many new amazing people with approximately one hundred other Year 12 students a ending and 10 uni students there to help out. There were ac vi es such as a karaoke night, which not only was great fun, but also gave us the chance to get to know each other. The lectures were also very interes ng and informa ve, my favourite being Stewart Gillies’ Dynamic Presenta on Skills talk. Overall, it was a fun and educa onal experience making me even more excited to start university. Kat, Year 12

We started the LOTE and Interna onal year with a celebra on of Lunar New Year: What a wonderful term to begin with at our Confucius Classroom in 2019. We celebrated the Year of the Pig at the beginning of February then our Year 11 students visited UQ and had a wonderful taste of Chinese for a day. We tasted Chinese food, par cipated in Chinese lectures at UQ.

The ac vity was called “Taste of China” it introduced students to three separate learning areas. The first area was spoken Chinese, in which we prac ced some common Chinese tongue twisters that came from the song (meaning speaking Chinese) by S.H.E. A er prac cing the tongue twister we had a mini compe on in which the winner got prizes. The second area explored was wri en Chinese and the third was the Confucius Ins tute in which we learnt about Beijing opera, paper cu ng. Apart from introducing us to Chinese cultural, the University of Queensland explained some of their university Chinese language courses and the opportunity of scholarships. Distance Education

Bonjour! My name is Makissi. I come from Guinea where French is the na onal language. I studied French in Guinea for thirteen years.

At Yeronga SHS I have studied French through the School of Distance Educa on for Years 11 and 12.

The University held a welcome day for all senior French students in Brisbane. The day was great fun and I was finally able to meet my teacher and my virtual classmates. We learned about French courses at the University. Some students win scholarships to travel to France and live there for a short me. I would love to do that one day.

We enjoyed all the ac vi es and food and it was wonderful to speak French for a whole day!

Vive la France!

Distance Educa on is a great avenue for senior students (Years 10, 11 & 12) who wish to study subjects not offered at Yeronga SHS. Those who experience a clash in their metables can also elect to study their subject via Distance Educa on. Lessons are virtual and students need to log into lessons two or three mes a week as required. Exams are supervised at Yeronga SHS while other assessment items are submi ed online. This year students have chosen a diverse range of subjects, which they plan to use in their future careers. These subjects include Japanese, Philosophy & Reason, Psychology, Modern History, Economics, Physics, Business Studies, and Digital Solu ons. Students interested in future studies can see the list of subjects offered on the Distance Educa on website.
