Our objective to date has been to educate our members about the various facets of equity investing through an interactive and social environment.

YIC is committed to providing its members with the skills to become active participants in capital markets, knowledge of the multitude of career paths and opportunities available in the world of finance and investment, and skills to be top-tier employment candidates for the world’s largest and most respected finance-driven organizations.

One of our unique activities is the pooling of capital from members which follows with the monthly selection of equity investment alternatives in order to provide a forum for students to receive hands-on exposure to investment research and the due diligence process.

In addition to our aforementioned core educational activities, we also present numerous opportunities for members to hone their networking skills and build a strong alliance of colleagues and contacts that will serve as an invaluable asset in their personal and professional lives.

Our alumni and current executives have been recruited by prestigious institutions including Merrill Lynch, TD Securities, Scotia Capital, PricewaterhouseCoopers, Monitor Group, KPMG, Deloitte & Touche and many more.

WhatWeHaveTo Offer

The York Investment Club highly values its partners. The corporate development team extensively researches each industry niche and individual company in order to constantly strengthen its corporate relationships. The team maintains constant contact as part of its relationship management activities in order to accommodate all of our partners’ interests and needs.

Although specific tangibles are outlined in the sponsorship levels at the end of this package, it is important to note the intangible value gained as part of a partnership with YIC.

These values offered by YIC can be grouped into four key areas:

1.

2.

3.Direct Access to Top StudentsAs the largest and most active club at the Schulich School of Business, YIC presents its partners with access to the best and the brightest finance students that Canada has to offer – a pool of candidates unmatched by other student organizations at York University or Schulich.

YIC also presents a marketing advantage to its partners. Over 200 finance students (with an average income of 100,000+ within 2-3 years of graduation) as well as distinguished faculty present great customer development and marketing opportunities.

YIC offers a plethora of branding opportunities for companies to promote their name as well as their products. Aside from the highly popular t-shirts - print material, electronic material, name dedications, sampling and demonstration events are offered by YIC to our partners in order to better serve their marketing agendas.

Lastly, please consider the added value that an association with the Schulich School of Business presents (www.schulich.yorku.ca). The reputation, goodwill, and exposure associated with the school are invaluable to any reputable financial institution.

2007-2008 InitiativesYIC Capital Markets Certification Program»

New to the 2007-2008 school year, YIC will be launching the highly anticipated Capital Markets Certification Program. This ambitious project is intended to better prepare Schulich students for careers in finance, and specifically to develop YIC members into leading candidates for employment in capital markets.

The program will consist of 3 levels. Each level will last for a full semester

and will cover a range of topics that are supplementary to, but not included in, the Finance curriculum at the Schulich School of Business.

Students can advance to the next level of their study by passing a final assessment in each semester. Upon completion of the program, YIC members will have a noticeable advantage in their knowledge of capital markets and finance principles and subsequent qualification of jobs in those fields.

09 // 2007-2008 INITIATIVES

This level will introduce students to the world of investing from the most basic topics (i.e. Time Value of Money) up to lessons on financial and economic indicators and investing strategies. Students will be evaluated with a written multiple choice/short answer test.

This level will build on the knowledge accumulated from Level 1 as Level 2’s emphasis lies in learning how to carry out fundamental and technical analysis. Students will also learn about famous investors and will have the opportunity to participate in workshops teaching them about different research sources and techniques. Evaluation will be in the form of a case-study. By the end of this level, the student should be able to conduct research and will have the tools to start their own personal investing portfolio.

“Special Topics” refers to a variety of interesting and time-sensitive topics that will vary from year-to-year depending on the key issues in the finance industry at the time. Speakers will be invited to lead students through information sessions and question/answer panels to help educate them on topics such as derivatives, private equity, modeling techniques, in addition to advanced analysis. A case-study evaluation method will also be applied for this level.

The program is a joint collaboration between the executive of the York Investment Club and the faculty of Finance at the Schulich School of Business. It will consist of online tutorials and tests, as well as attending guest speakers. The YIC Capital Markets Certification Program is intended to become synonymous with knowledge, expertise and professional success.

Level 2 >> Module 2: Fundamental Analysis

2.2.1 Company Analysis

We have made it to the culminat-

ing step in your top-down stock

selection approach. You now

have several industries that you think will

do well. It is time to get down and dirty

analyzing specific corporations and pick-

ing the best companies with underpriced

stocks.

It is imperative to understand that good

companies do not necessarily have good

stocks. For instance, Intel Corp. is a fi-

nancially strong enterprise in a relatively

decent industry. But trading at the begin-

ning of 2004 it was incredibly overvalued

(with a P/E of over 30, more on this later)

and came down substantially since then.

The lesson to learn is: the stock of a great

company must be underpriced in order to

constitute a great investment.

Quantitative Analysis

All the quantitative analysis performed on

a company will involve the use of public-

ly-available financial statements. As your

accounting professor will ramble on and

on, the three financial statements are:

Each of these statements provides a dif-

ferent insight into the company, its fi-

nancial performance and position. The

the balance sheet,

the income statement and

the statement of cash flows

»

»

»

balance sheet shows assets (what the

company owns), liabilities (what the

company owes) and shareholders’ equity

(what investors have contributed to the

company – both direct stock investments

and profit reinvestments). The income

statement gives a glimpse at gross rev-

enue as the top line and then lists all the

expenses, finally arriving at net profit. The

cash flow statement displays cash inflows

and outflows. You can download financial

statements of your favourite company by

logging onto www.sedar.com (Canadian

reporting companies) or http://www.

sec.gov/edgar.shtml (American reporting

companies).

The tactic of finding a future chart-buster

is simple. First, find a stock that seems

cheaper than its industry counterparts.

Then justify that it is undervalued and is

indeed worth more because of its funda-

mentals.

In Search of a BargainStocks cheaper than their industry peers

can be spotted using several ratios. Why

do we resort to calculating ratios rather

than using absolute figures? Think about

it. In absolute terms, a $60 stock of com-

pany A is more expensive than a $5 stock

of company B that is in the same industry.

However, let’s assume company A’s earn-

ings per share (annual net income divided

by the number of outstanding shares, ab-

breviated EPS) is $60 and company B’s

3.1 Introduction to DerivativesWhether used for portfolio hedging purposes, or purely speculative trading, derivatives are an important tool to master for your personal and professional development. This section will cover the basics derivative products, including options, futures and swaps, as well as strategies for their use.

3.2 Introduction to ModelingAs a first-year analyst in investment banking, you will spend most of your time creating extensive valuation models in Excel. Introduction to modeling will provide you with an overview of the different types of models, including comparable company analysis, discounted cash flow and accredtion/dilution, in addition to their standard structures.

3.3 Private Equity and Venture CapitalPrivate equity has successfully cast its image as the media darling of the world of finance. What exactly is private equity, how do they make their money, and how can I become a part of this booming industry? These questions, and many more, will be answered.

YICMAIL»Monthly Meetings»The York Investment Club is committed to educating its members on wise and informed investing. The club performs this function in an interactive manner through monthly investment meetings.

YIC pools capital from all members who wish to have a “hands-on” experience of investing in capital markets. The stocks in which the capital will be invested are picked through the monthly investment meetings.

Social Events»Aside from the educational aspect of its programs, the YIC focuses on developing networking skills among top finance students. It does this through the facilitation of numerous social events throughout the academic year. These events are meant to develop confidence among our members, to allow more mature students to “mentor” the incoming class, as well as develop long lasting relationships.

Past events included: Alumni and sponsor panels, movie nights, comedy nights, barbeques and much more.

YIC maintains the largest membership at the business school partly due to its reputation as a medium where students can interact with alumni and industry professionals throughout the year.

YIC sends its members weekly e-mails regarding upcoming information sessions, club events, and member achievements in inter-university stock simulations. In the upcoming academic year, the e-mails will be upgraded to include member FAQ’s, featured stock market web resources and finance blog links. These messages reach a wide audience of members and offer very effective promotional opportunities.

Bi-Monthly Newsletters

»

The YIC Newsletter is another new initiative being launched in the 2007-2008 school year. This will include YIC Analyst stock forecasts for upcoming Stock Selection meetings as well as financial news articles, investing tips and an investment Q&A Column to better educate our junior members.

The newsletter will also feature interviews with professionals in the financial industry. The YIC Newsletter is a great opportunity for sponsors to become actively involved in their partnership with YIC. Through company and career spotlights, educating members about the financial industry will also help fulfill the promotional marketing goals of YIC’s sponsors.

External Activities»YIC members participate in external events such as inter-university stock market simulation competitions. Other past special events include a New York trip to Wall Street in order to expose members to the trading floor and large investment firms.

This upcoming year, YIC is hosting “A Day on Bay”, an exclusive YIC visit to Toronto’s Bay Street. This educational excursion will increase member awareness of the local career choices available to those interested in the finance industry.

Combined with internal activities, these external events allow YIC sponsors to gain exposure both within and outside the Schulich community.

The meetings consist of stock “pitches” by a team of YIC analysts – students trained under the chief investment strategist – and conclude with a vote by all investing members. The stock that is voted on by the majority of investing members is then bought with the investment fund capital and held for a specific amount of time.

All investment capital net of gains or losses is then returned to members at the end of the year.
