YMLA: Rules and Organization

School Hours

NO LONGER 8:45 am - 3:55 pm

YMLA hours are 9:00 am – 4:30 pm

Merit System Points will be earned/deducted based on the following:

Winning house earns popcorn and a

movie in the gym.

Winning house earns an afternoon picnic

in the yard.

Dress Code Pants:

Appropriate fitting khaki or black

No cargo pants

Sagging will not be tolerated at all

Collared Shirts (No t-shirts):

Solid red, white, navy, light blue, or black

MUST BE TUCKED IN WITH A BELT

Appropriate hairstyles and jewelry

No distracting styles (mohawks, designs, etc)

No non-natural colors or highlights

Shoes: White, khaki, or black with non-colored laces

ID Card: must be worn around the neck and visible at all times

Dress Code Continued Spirit Days - YMLA spirit t-shirt (sold by PTA)

earned by reaching leadership goals

Athletics/PE

Spirit t-shirt or white t-shirt, black shorts, tennis shoes

Leadership Outings for the Leadership Elective class

will be professional dress or school standardized

dress. This will be discussed as part of the Leadership

class

Before School Students may begin to enter the building through the

front doors at 8am

Students will be directed to the cafeteria where they

will be monitored or to their teacher’s room if they

have a pass

Students can work on assignments, eat breakfast, or

socialize in cafeteria

Once seated, students will remain seated

We expect our young men to act like MEN

Morning Passes

Students must have a pass to go to a teacher’s room each morning

A parent can write the pass

Students without a pass will not be allowed down the hallway

After School After school it is expected that students leave the

building and return home. Unless a student has

permission from a teacher, is attending after school

tutoring, or is participating in extra or co-curricular

activities.

Students will be monitored until 4:50

Students still on campus after 4:50 will be

unmonitored

Attendance

If students are not in attendance

according to state law, missed days will

be made up after school is out in

Attendance Summer School

If students are out for a legitimate

reason, a parent or guardian must

provide a written note when the

student returns to school.

A note must be received within 4

DAYS or the absence will be

unexcused

The parent must sign a doctor’s note

as well

Checking In / Out of school

All students must be checked in and out in the

Attendance office.

The attendance office will have a form to sign

students in and out of school.

No child will be checked out of the building by

anyone other then those individuals who are

noted on the registration form

Late Arrival to school If any student is late to school in the morning, a

Late Arrival Slip will be needed to enter class.

The Late Arrival Slip must be picked up from the

Attendance office

Students are allowed four late arrivals per school

year.

After four Late Arrivals, students are turned over to

a truancy officer.

Hallways

We expect our hallways, as well as any other area

at YMLA, to be a safe and orderly environment

for everyone

Walk on the right side of the hallway and keep

moving

Avoid running, being excessively loud, horseplay,

etc

ACT LIKE MEN

Tardy between classes

There are no bells at YMLA

Students have 3 minutes between classes

YMLA classes will run similar to college classes

Students are expected to be on time

Teacher will handle tardies

Excessive tardiness or an excessive amount of tardies

will be dealt with by administration as a TRUANCY

issue

ID Cards

Must be worn around the neck and visible at all

times

All students will be issued their first ID card

If lost, they will have to buy each ID card

Replacement cards cost $2

Discipline consequences can be issued for not

possessing or visibly wearing an ID card

Breakfast

If students prefer to eat at school, we ask that they eat

the breakfast provided by the cafeteria

Vending machines will be turned off during breakfast

times

Students who choose to eat breakfast will eat in a

designated area

Once finished eating they may join their friends

Lunch Will eat at their teacher’s

assigned table Administration will

supervise lunch times Get all food, drink, snacks,

ketchup, napkins, etc the first time through the line

Once seated, students will remain seated

Our young men will clean up after themselves

Will dismiss by table and line up in your teacher’s

designated area

Misbehavior will result in isolation lunch

School Discipline

Consequences

We have high expectations for our young men

Attempt to provide the best learning environment for all of our students

Will follow the YMLA Discipline Management Plan

Demerits will be issued based on the misbehavior

Detention

Evening or Saturday School: parent will attend Saturday

Expulsion

Discipline Referrals

For students who refuse to improve their

behavior

YMLA can contact by phone, voice mail, email,

or automated calling system

Family must make arrangements for before or

after school consequences

Make sure YMLA has your correct contact

information

Discipline Consequences Detention:

Students are required to stay after school. No shows or late arrival will result in evening or Saturday school

Future no-shows will result in an ISS assignment

Evening or Saturday School: No shows or late arrival will result in an immediate placement in ISS the following day(s) Parents must notify the YMLA admin by 3:00 pm the day of the consequence if schedule

conflict

In-School Suspension (ISS): Reserved for more serious offenses and persistent misbehavior ISS will be held on campus from 9:00 am – 4:45 pm

Alternative Education Placement (AEP): According to board policy, the Code of Conduct, and the YMLA Discipline Plan Assigned to the AEP for very serious offenses, and for persistent misbehavior

Expulsion from GPISD: For very serious offenses outlined in board policy and the GPISD Code of Conduct

Lockers and Locks No lockers will be issued in the building during the

2012-13 school year

Students can carry their backpacks to their classes

Students participating in PE/Athletics will be issued a

locker in their dressing room.

Students will have to provide their own lock.

Electronic Devices Must remain off and put away during school hours

otherwise it will be take up without warning

This comes into effect as soon as the student enters the

building (including restrooms, cafeteria, hallways, etc) and

ends at 4:30

1st offense: parent must pick and sign for device

2nd – 4th: $15 fine per offense and parent pickup/signature

5th: kept by administration for remainder of year and parent pick

up/signature on the last day of school

Teachers may allow students to use their electronic devices

for educational purposes. This only applies to that teacher’s

classroom on the day he or she gives permission

Unauthorized Items CD players, cameras, laser pointers, laptop computers, or

personal digital assistants (PDA’s), magazines, handheld

electronic games, playing cards, and other such

unauthorized items can be confiscated by any staff

member if they are discovered during school

pick up/signature on the last day of school

School Sponsored Events

All GPISD Code of Conduct and School Rules are effective at

any school event (on our campus or other’s)

We expect our students to act like MEN and be an example

to the community
