(July 21st 1899 - October 27th 1986)

As the accepted source from which modern Hapkido arts flow,Choi Yong Sul Dojunim has had a profound influence on boththe development of the Hapkido arts specifically, and Koreanmartial traditions in general. Over a period of 30 yearsDojunim Choi studied and trained in Japan, returning to hisnative Korea in 1946 to share his skills and knowledge. Manywell known Hapkido Grand Masters learnt from Choi andmany major traditions of the Hapkido arts and a host of othertraditions, can trace their origins either indirectly or directly toChoi Yong Sul Dojunim.

It is with deepest respect and the greatest pleasure that I amextending my personal invitation to you to join in aweek ofcelebration in tribute to the life and traditions of Choi Yong SulDojunim. The late Lee Yong Su and I were honored to havelearned our skills from Choi from 1973 until his death in 1986,and both having received 9th Dan ranking from Choi. Moreimportantly, however, we were taught the purpose ofpreserving Choi’s art. For this reason I have continued to“wear my uniform daily until I die”, and to teach in the way thatI was taught. It is a special honor, bestowed by Choi Dojunim,that our tradition bears his name.

When you attend you will experience Choi Dojunim’s art theway it was passed on to me for the purpose of itspreservation. As Choi Dojunim wished, it has been unalteredand is practiced daily in is this fashion at Yong Sul Kwan.The training occurs in the very Dojang built by Lee andmyself, as instructed by Choi Dojunim, to receive histeachings and to carry out his request to record andphotograph the curriculum as he taught it.

It is my fervent hope that this will be a memorable occasion tocommemorate Choi’s Life and his passing. Moreover, this alsowill be an occasion for martial artists whose lives and art mayhave been influenced by Choi to meet and pay respects, toexperience Yong Sul Kwan Hapkido Hapkiyusul and todemonstrate their arts.

Throughout your stay there will be morning and even trainingsessions conducted by myself, where you will have theopportunity to see and experience how the art pieces togetherand witness it being performed. In addition arrangementshave been made to encourage attendees to share and todiscuss their traditions in an atmosphere of support andfraternity. Attendees will be encouraged to do a briefdemonstration from their respective Dojangs on the openingday of the festival.

Festival Details

LocationThe festival will be held in the rural city ofGeumsan, located 180 Km south of Seoul inthe southern part of Cheung Cheong NamDo province, about 30 km from Daejeon(the nearest large city). Geumsan is wellknown for farming Ginseng. For manyyears Geumsan ginseng was thought to bethe best you could get, as the mountainousarea, clean water and balance betweenmountains and streams provide the perfectgrowing conditions.

Geumsan offers all the conveniences you would expect to findin a rural city. There is wide variety of restaurants, bakeries,coffee shops, banks, post office, fruit shops, supermarkets,laundromats, newsagents, hospitals, pharmacies, internetcafes, drinking establishments and an oriental herb market.Every five days there is a local market where locally grownproduce is sold.

There are many small hotels located around Geumsan,providing access to restaurants, coffee shops, bakeries andthe dojang where the festival is to be held. They are clean,priced very reasonably, have a double bed, TV, computer,refrigerator, air-conditioning, bathroom with western styletoilet.

On the outskirts of Geumsan in the country side there is moreexpensive self contained cottage style accommodation. Thosepreferring this option will need to hire a car

Transportation

To Geumsan from Incheon International Airport

Flights should arrive at Inchon InternationalAirport on or before the 7th of October, a guide from Yong Sul Kwan willmeet all flights arriving on the7th of October.

If you arrive before wecan help you arrangeaccommodation at ahotel located close to theairport or advise you onyour own transportationto Geumsan.

Transportation from IncheonInternational airport/hotel toGeumsan will be by the AirportLimousine Bus service to Daejeonand a bus from Daejeon toGeumsan. You will be accompanied by aguide from Yong Sul Kwan.Approx travel time is 3-4hours.

If you arrive after the 7th a Yong Sul Kwan guide will not beavailable.

During the Festival

There are taxies, local buses and car rental available.

For the trip to Daegu to visit Choi Yong Sul Dojunim’s gravea bus will be provided by Yong Sul Kwan.

A bus will also be organized for day trip sightseeing.
