George S. Kaufman and Moss Hart’s three-act comedic play, which premiered on Broadway in 1936, won the 1937 Pulitzer Prize for Drama, and the 1938 film adaptation directed by Frank Capra won Academy Awards for Best Picture and Best Director. The story follows a batty New York City family whose daughter falls for a financier’s son. When she invites her snooty prospective in-laws to dinner so the couple can get their blessing for marriage, the young woman’s peculiar extended family seems a bit eccentric to her conservative love interest’s family. You Can’t Take It With You shows the great divide between a rather zany family, the Sycamores, and the straight-and-narrow Kirbys. But when the straight-laced son, Tony, and peculiar daughter, Alice, fall in love and plan to get married, their two worlds collide,” explained Wheatley Theatre Company Copresident Hallie ArbitalJacoby, who plays the wacky mom, Penny Sycamore. “When the Kirbys arrive at the dinner party on the wrong night, the comedy takes many unexpected twists and turns.” Throughout the play, the audience has the opportunity to ponder which of these very different families is actually happier. You Can’t Take it With You is the ultimate feel-good show, filled with an array of larger-than-life characters, romance, wrestling and lots of fireworks,” said Wheatley Theatre Company Copresident Talia Rosen. The senior has been the assistant director and stage manager for many shows throughout her years at Wheatley, and is now the first student to direct a play at the school. “There is never a dull moment in the Sycamore’s home, which is always filled with fireworks, dancing, xylophone playing, playwriting, painting, snakes, darts, candy making, printing, toy models and much more, continued ArbitalJacoby. “The play’s takeaway is to do what you love and cherish the small moments, because looking back on life, those are the very things you will want to remember.” Cast mates include Sydney Behar as Grandma Francis Vanderhof, ArbitalJacoby as Penelope “Penny” Sycamore, Kimberly Esquilin as Alice Sycamore, Jason Manzano as Tony Kirby, Rahul Ajmera as Paul Sycamore, Devyn Bennett as Essie Carmichael, Jacob Kaufman as Ed Carmichael, Justin Vega as Anthony Kirby, Alexandra Kasparian as Miriam Kirby, Pricilla Prasad as Ms. De Pinna, Emma Melnikov as Belka Kolenkov, Caroline Crimmins as Rheba, Skylar Blechner as Donald, Kaileigh Fiorello as Grand Duchess Olga Katrina, Jeffrey Melnikov as Wilbur Henderson and Alison Amarain as Gay Wellington. G-Men are portrayed by Shruti Goyal as The Man, Ethan Moreh as Joe and Emma Leng as Mac. Assisting Rosen behind the scenes are students Lucy Bracconcino and Rachel Fuzaylov as assistant directors, Stephanie Clarfield as stage manager and Moreh as stage assistant. Social studies teacher Andrew Ardito is the theatre company’s advisor. “The show is perfect for the whole family and is guaranteed to leave you with a smile on your face and a warm feeling in your heart,” said Rosen. “If you listen closely enough, you might even find out the key to happiness.” Reserve a seat for $10 at wheatley theatrecompany.weebly.com or purchase a ticket at the door for $12 at 11 Bacon Rd. in Old Westbury.
