Dear Fellows!

A pious man. A directed descendent of the greatest prophet of the world.

A man who would pray five times a day, fast every year.

A man who'll not shy from truth in the face of adversity, a man who'll not divert from the

thorny path of honesty, be it for the wealth of world.

But, Respected Audience!

Is our protagonist any different from the pious men of ancient times?

NO, Respected Judges, he is not. But, it was the call of the children of koofa, the wailing

women of Euphrates. Evoked him to sacrifice his life, evoked him to show courage and

bravery, evoked him to come forward and fight.

Hussain –Ibn-e-Ali, would not be the personification of martyrdom, The Imam of Karbala, had

it not been the brazen barbarity of a butcher.

Had it not been sailing in the gravity of circumstances. He was the Brave Sailor.

Respected Audience!

Brave Sailors rise as a Phoenix from Embers

Brave Sailors rise flowers from soil.

As dead from Graves

And therefore, they are always supported by Winds.

With all this I thank you all.

Respected President! According to a dictionary, patriotism means love for one's own country. Our religion Islam – also teaches us to love our homeland as our Holy Prophet (P.B.U.H) also loved his homeland “Makkah” very much and he was very sad to leave it – so, we can say that loving one's own country is infact acting upon a lovely “Sunnah”. But,We all know that love is a feeling , it's a passion which can't be seen physically- but this can be shown –by deeds, our actions and our decision – because! To me, patriotism is not only a feeling- it's life style – it's a way of living – it's a scale to assess our decision whether they are wrong or write. Patriotism is a noble sentiment and a national virtue; and the man who lacks it- has – indeed as Sir Walter Scott says “a dead Soul”.“Breathes there the man with soul, so dead.Who never to himself hath said! “This is my own, my native land!”Respected President! The word “Patriotism” has been so much misused to cover the most selfish aims and – passions, that – Dr Samuel Johnson said in disgust. “Patriotism is the last refuge of scoundrel!” We must – therefore- distinguish – between true patriotism and the spurious article. Patriotism is- to be fair – “everywhere .”

It is not the stealing of electricity by “Kunda System”- It is the paying of utility bills – it is not hiding the assets- it is paying the taxes – it is not bowing before the “Super Power” it is bowing before “Supreme Power” and getting martyrdom in Giari Sector. Patriotism defines precisely our limits as a citizen. It makes us sure about our decisions – It tells us what to do and what to do not- It gives us power – it makes us strong- it forces Benazir to come back to her homeland and sacrifice her life instead of staying in London for more than two decades. It gives Imran Khan power to face the failure of his marriage instead of leaving Pakistan forever.

Honourable president and respected audience! Today I am given the opportunity to give my views on “Patriotism”.

72

Mam President! Patriotism is one of the noblest virtues. A true patriot always thinks in terms of his country. He is always ready to work for the welfare of his countrymen. He loves his country, truly and intensely. He is tolerant towards others. He loves mankind but he doesn't love his countrymen less.

“I owe to thee, my country all things above, entire and whole and perfect the service of my love, The love that asks no questions.

The love that stands the test .” Thank You

“He it is who made the sun a shining brightness and the moon a light”“He it is who made the sun a shining brightness and the moon a light”“He it is who made the sun a shining brightness and the moon a light”

( Surah Younas ) ( Surah Younas ) ( Surah Younas )

Solar energy, radiant light and heat from the sun, has been harnessed by humans since

ancient times using a range of ever-evolving technologies. Solar heating, solar photovoltaic's,

solar thermal electricity and solar architecture, which can make considerable contributions

to solving some of the most urgent problems the world now faces. Solar technologies are

broadly characterized as either passive solar or active solar depending on the way they

capture, convert and distribute solar energy. Active solar techniques include the use of

photovoltaic panels and solar thermal collectors to harness the energy. Passive solar

techniques include orienting a building to the sun, selecting materials with favourable

thermal mass or light dispersing properties, and designing spaces that naturally circulate air.

'Sun's rays are the ultimate source of almost every

motion which takes place on the surface of the earth. By

them are produced all disturbances of chemical

equilibrium of the elements of nature which by a series

of composition and decompositions, give rise to new

product and originate a transfer of material.

(Sir John Hershal)

Solar power is the conversion of sunlight into electricity, either directly using photovoltaics

(PV), or indirectly using concentrated solar power (CSP). Concentrated solar power systems

use lenses, or mirrors and tracking systems to focus a large area of sunlight into a small beam.

Photovoltaics convert light into electric current using the photoelectric effect.

73

‘I have no doubt that we will be successful in harnessing the sun's energy. If sun beams were weapons of war, we would have had solar energy centuries ago'. (Georage Porter, Nobel Prize Winner in Chemistry) The sun is the source of enormous energy. The solar energy received by the total land of India is about 19 trillion kwh per day, which is about 2.2 million tonnes of oil equivalent. Solar radiation is currently being used to generate electricity via two technologies.

I. Solar Thermal

ii. Photovoltaic

I. Solar Thermal:

Solar cookers, solar water heaters coupled with geysers and solar air heating systems are some attractive options of utilization of solar energy for domestic purposes. Solar dryers, solar desalination systems and wood seasoning kilns are now being manufactured by serval private manufacturers. Solar cold storage and solar power generating systems have also been installed and tried successfully.ii. Solar Photovoltaic:

The process of conversion of sun light directly to electricity is known as photo – electricity or photovoltaic conversion. The devices used are photovoltaic cells or simply solar cells.

a. Solar devices thus involve electronic devices which are dependent on the sun or its rays or any form of light for its operation. They are mostly referred to as photosensitive devices. Solar devices in this group comprises photosensitive semiconductor devices in which the action of visible rays infra-red rays or ultra-violet rays causes variations in resistivity or generates an electromotive force by the internal photoelectric effect. The main types of photosensit ive semiconductor devices are : Photoconductive cells (light dependent resistors) usually consisting of two electrodes between which is a semiconductor substance (cadmium sulphide lead sulphide etc.) whose electrical resistance varies with the intensity of illumination falling on the cell “It' s really kind of cool to have solar panels on your roof. (Bill Gates) The solar cells are semiconductors and are made from silicon. The cells are made of two chips of silicon crystals with junctions between them. When sunlight falls on the sandwitch, it boils the electrons in the silicon crystal and the electron moves through the junction and an electric current is produced. The current is a direct current (d.c) . Hence it is converted to alternating current (a.c) before use. Solar energy is the nature available source of energy, it is continuous providing by the sun. It is the most important of non-conventional sources of energy therefore it is one of the non- polluting energy and helps in lessening the green house effect.

74

75

‘I'd put my money on the sun and solar energy – What a source of power. I hope we don't have to wait until oil and coal run out, before we tackle that” (Thomas Edison) Solar energy is the most nature inexhaustible renewable energy. To the world's energy resources perspective, we have relied heavily on traditional energy stocks which are already very limited storage. Capacity of the remaining oil can be used only for forty-three years; natural gas storage capacity of the remainder can only be one hundred and sixty seven years and Coal is for 417 years, these stocks will be growing less as people increasingly exhausted to do extraction. In addition, carbon dioxide emissions from conventional energy sources is the phenomenon of global warming caused by – major reason. The sun sends energy to Earth, but only to its 22 billionth of outward radiation of energy, just from these energies, if the surface of the Earth's atmosphere to remove the reflection and absorption of energy, approximately equal to the world's current generation capacity of 20 million times. Solar energy received on Earth everyday, equivalent to the entire world for one year the total energy consumed by 200 times .On the average sunny day the sun shines approximately 1 000 walts of energy per square meter, enough energy to power all of our electricity need and excess. Only from these figures we can see a huge, really worthy of the sun's energy is an inexhaustible treasure house of mankind. “Because we are now running out of gas and oil we must prepare quickly for a third change, to strict conservation and to the use of coal and permanent renewable energy sources, like solar power. (Jimmy Carter)On the other hand, the earth's variety of energy sources, including chemical energy, wind energy, ocean energy, thermal energy and nuclear energy are all descendants of solar energy, solar energy conversion made. Because photovoltaic clean noise-free and changing, as many renewable energy sources and it is the development of the most characteristic items of energy. Solar energy is clean. Gas run engines, pollute the air and cost a good amount of money to run. Nuclear energy is great, but we still have to store the rods that are taken from the nuclear plant and there is also the chance of nuclear fallout and meltdown. Another reason why to study solar energy is because it is available! It is everywhere. With other energy sources we have to mine, work, drill, and risk accident and explosion just to power a single neighborhood. The sun is referred to in many verses as a lamp, which is a device that generates light, heat and radiations.

“Blessed is He Who made constellations in the skills, and placed there in a lamp, and a moon giving light”.

(Surah 25,61)

Man has been trying to discover new worlds since creation. He has been doing so to find new resources, treasures, more places for vegetation and most of all a better place for living where he can enjoy real peace and comforts. And this urge of man led him to discover the whole universe. So, he looked at the moon and the stars with the aim to reach there but at that time it was practically impossible. So, scientists broke all barriers of impossibility, experimented a lot, made a machine for conquering this huge distance and finally the mystery of space and moon was solved with the landing of Neil Armstrong on moon. American flag was hoisted there and Neil Armstrong became famous all over the world. It was really a great achievement which opened the doors of new challenges for the world and Russia came forward to accept this challenge. But this discovery raises certain questions:

How did Neil Armstrong feel to be there? Did Neil see any living creature like human being on moon? Will it be possible for humans to live there in future? Will it be possible to grow vegetation there? Does the land of moon have any hidden treasure? How does the earth look like from moon?

I wanted to know the answers of all these questions and my research took me to Neil Armstrong. So I got this.He said,

“As I stepped on the moon, I looked around, dazed….. magnificent. The vast sandy silver surface was almost illusionary. It is a brilliant surface in that sunlight. There was no life on the moon but it was such a lively scene. The sight of the moon is itself such a big treasure that any earthly sight is not a match to it. It is an interesting place to be visited. It suddenly struck me that tiny pea, pretty and blue, was the earth, I put my thumb and shut one eye and my thumb blotted out planet earth. I did not feel like a giant, I felt very very small.” This is the quote of Neil Armstrong which clarifies certain things, also creates ambiguities but now it is up to the man to continue this struggle and remove all these ambiguities. Satellites that are working in space indicate the success of man and success of Neil Armstrong's visit to the moon. So, the day is not far off when humans will be able to visit moon frequently and find more planets where life can exist. The key is the struggle which should be continued.

Role of Youth in Nation Building Role of Youth in Nation Building Role of Youth in Nation Building

Youth power is a recognized force in the world today. The youth are filled with tremendous energy and towering ambitions. They can be utilized as a constructive and a destructive force by any nation. During the eighties, the youth made themselves prominent in many socialist countries of Europe and China. Tianamen square in Beijing, China witnessed a powerfuldemonstration. Thousands of Chinese youth sacrificed their lives in order to bring democracy in that autocratic state. Wherever there are riots in any state, political forces use their youth power to solve these problems.

their futures. It is dangerous to allow them to remain idle as it would increase their frustration which would result in chaos and disturbances. Pakistani youth have never lagged behind when called upon to meet any challenge. It is the duty of national leaders to play their part by mobilizing their abilities and providing them with suitable opportunities. The advice to the youth is to show them up. Because,

“Youth shows but half, trust God, see all; nor be afraid!” Robert Browning

Let there be no doubt about the strength, power and capabilities of youth all over the

world. They were instrumental in dethroning autocratic rulers-the Czars of Russia, Sukarno of

Indonesia, Hitler of Germany etc. Further, in our country before partition, the youth played a

very dynamic role in the freedom movement.

After independence too, they are in forefront of many forceful movements. They have

changed the shape of many state governments and have influenced their policy decisions.

Nation building is a herculean task and can be divided into phases. Everyone can

contribute towards the same. All the young people may take part in this noble task according

to their capacities. First of all, they should be made to understand a specific project and its

importance to the society and also the part they could play in it for making it a success.

77

Given a suitable direction, they are sure to work hard for its fulfillment. They would feel more than satisfied that they have been assigned a task of nation building. The realization will encourage them to put their hearts for fulfilling the commitment. It is not very difficult to mobilize the youth for nation building task provided that one has the requisite qualities of honesty, intelligence and leadership. As,

“The distance does not matter, it is only the first step that is most difficult.”Marie du Deffand

There can be large number of scheme projects and programs where improvement of the youth would bring quicker and better results. Socio-economic reconstruction of society, adult education, combating smuggling, black-marketing, hoarding, terrorism are such type of areas in which they can play an effectively role. Once they are genuinely involved, their interest in constructive work would be aroused. They would be prepared to work sincerely for the welfare of the country.By employing these persons in some socially useful tasks, the possibilities of violence, unrest and turmoil could be greatly minimized. The present trend of the society has already created havoc throughout the world. The youth have gone berserk owing to invasions of satellite televisions, Western cultures as well as due to narcotic tendencies of the west. Pakistani youth are prone to copy anything and everything coming via west. Further neglect to this vital area would push our society in serious trouble. It is greatly needed that these young minds should never be directed towards negativity and bad practices. Because,

“A bad beginning makes a bad ending.”Euripides

The youth should be kept occupied in school and colleges with facilities for sports and entertainment. They must be trained in vocational streams. They should be allowed to develop scientific tempers. Political activities in colleges and universities must be banned. Education should be made job-oriented. Because,

“An investment in education pays best interest.”Abraham Lincoln

It is also a high time for our leaders to inject a fresh vigour in our youth, arouse their confidence and develop a sense of honour, and appreciation for their cultural heritage and finally, a patriotic fervour. Then only we would be able to construct a healthy and strong Pakistan.

Child LabourChild LabourChild Labour

nd2 Position, Essay Writing Competition at District Level Punjab Youth Festival 2012 at Elementary Level

Child labour is a curse to a nation and a crime against humanity. Children work when they are supposed to play or go to school. The sad thing is that they work under hazardous conditions. Child labour refers to the employment of children in any work that deprives them of their childhood. Although poverty is the main cause of child labour throughout the world but society, parents, individuals, low wages, unemployment and poor standards of living are also responsible for child labour. It has become a common phenomenon in under-developed countries because the poverty stricken people do not send their children to schools due to unbearable expenses of education rather they send their children to workshops or factories for earning. Therefore, they remain uneducated and become a burden on society. Once John F. Kennedy said,

Working children are also the victims of abuse and exploitation by their employers and even their parents too. Instead of going to school they are employed in hazardous works like making of fire crackers, match boxes carpet industry, pencil industry, auto workshops and as waiters in small hotels etc. In the fire cracker industry many children lose their lives due to fire accidents. In pencil industry many children are subject to lung disorder at a very young age because of inhaling all the dust. According to world labour report child labour is also known as “forced labour” because children are compelled to work on a regular basis to earn for their families unwillingly. In order to stop child labour the government of any nation will have to take serious action. Strict laws should be made. The government should also make sure that every parent send their child to school and those who commit this crime should be heavily fined and imprisoned. Education should be free for all at least till matriculation level.

“A child mis-educated is a child lost.”

“The world revolves around the children and thechildren's future revolves around their education.”

Taimoor Adnan, VIII-Golden Johar Town Campus

“Eradicate child labour and help to aspire for a better future.”

Education creates awareness about the basic rights of the people. It is a key to all developments. If we educate our youth properly, then the task of nation building will become easy. If people become civilized, our country (Pakistan) will progress by leaps and bounds. Therefore,

79

Geostrategic means the importance of a country or a region as by virtue of its

geographical location. Geo political is defined as, stressing the influence of geographic

factors on the state power, international conduct and advantages it derives from its location.

Stephen Cohn describes this importance, “While history has been unkind to Pakistan, its

geography has been its greatest benefit. It has resource rich area in the north-west, people

rich in the north-east.”

Bridge between South Asia and South West Asia, Iran and Afghanistan are energy

abundant while India and China are lacking of .China finds way to Indian Ocean and Arabian

Sea through Karakorum. China with its fastest economic growth rate of 97% is developing its

southern provinces because its own port is 4500 km away from Sinkiang but Gawader is

2500km away. Pakistan offers to CARs the shortest route of 2600 km as compared to Iran

(4500km) or Turkey (5000 km).

Iran is struggling to export its surplus gas and oil to eastern countries. Qatar Pakistan

and Turkmenistan Pipeline projects highlight the position. Pakistan would get 400 million

dollar annually if IPI gets success. Mountain Ranges Himalayas, Hindu Kush in the North are

plentiful in providing water and natural resources.

USA has interests in the regions to contain the growing China, nuclear Iran, terrorist

Afghanistan, and to get benefit from the market of India. Security and Business are two main

US interests in the region while Pakistan is playing a front line role against terrorism.

The American think tanks have repeatedly accepted that war against terror could

never be won without the help of Pakistan. Pakistan has rigorously fought and ongoing

military operation in Waziristan is also targeting the suspected Taliban in the bordering area.

Main threats to Pakistan include Baluchistan and Waziristan which are posing threats to any

economic project like IPI gas pipeline. Kashmir is a flash point, accelerating nuclear race in

the South Asia. Instable governments in Pakistan have contributed in weakening the strong

position and are weakening the Muslim brotherhood, which is the real basis of Pakistan. With

time running out, the failure to resolve the crises mean that there will be no escape from the

eventual dark reality of disintegration. “Verily Allah will never change the condition of

people until they change what is in themselves.”
